Front bumper tow hook part 1

hkswrxwagon 02-02-2005 10:11 PM

Front bumper tow hook
Has anyone put a tow hook through their front bumper where the little removable panel is? where did you get it from cause I am having a hard time finding them.

unless you go to the track alot or have one insanely good looking wrx with butt-loads of power, i wouldn't recommend installing anything like this (semi)-permanently. it screams "rice!". just my 2 cents. :)
paperchasin 02-02-2005 11:19 PM

everything is rice nowadays....

The owners manual warns not to have a hook or eyelet permanently mounted. It interferes with the SRS system. Though I'm sure that you guys knew that already.

hkswrxwagon 02-02-2005 11:38 PM

what is the SRS system?
gdfoto 02-02-2005 11:44 PM

Safety Restraint System.

The little eyelet or hook protruding from your bumper may pentrate an object in a crash before your airbag sensor hits it. Thus you may get the full effect of a crash without the airbags going off since the hook transmits the force to your frame before touching the bumper. Or at least that is how I understand it.
what is the SRS system?
Basicly Airbags, the entire system and all active safety equipment and sensors
hkswrxwagon 02-02-2005 11:46 PM

Oh as long as it doesnt make it go off easier I dont care. The impact would have to be nearly perfect for the airbags not to get activated I would think.
tooocool49723 02-03-2005 12:16 AM

I would think that the extra force from not imacting the bumper would send the shock to the frame, be transmitted to the airbag sensor and tell it that your 5mph tap is a 35mph crash and cause the airbags to go off.

But what would I know? I'm just a specialist. I'm no guru or anything.

I think you're on the right track. That hook transmits ANY impact straight to the frame, rather than letting the bumper absorb the low-speed stuff. Fender bender could = airbag deployment.
afpdl 02-03-2005 03:40 AM

What is wrong with the one that came with the car?

For me the look.
KAX 02-03-2005 09:44 AM

the look? where are your hooks located? mines underneath the back of the car and you cant see. I would think one protruding from your front bumper would look worse. But if you do go this way, you could probably mount it in the fog light hole (if you dont have foglights) behind the bumper, so that will still take some of the shock instead of it immidiately being sent to the frame. but what would i know, im just a newbie

Have you never seen a full track car with a chassis tow loop that protrudes from the front bumper? Thats what I am talking about. I just wanted to see if anyone with a wrx has one installed so I can see it.
KAX 02-03-2005 01:07 PM

yes i have seen that and i understand what your doing, i just didnt understand how the look of the stock one is bad. Or is it that your going for the front onebecause you like the look better?
kennyvb 02-03-2005 01:28 PM

just paint the stock one neon green or whatever color you want.
dubba you are ex 02-03-2005 02:00 PM

reguardless, the airbags should still come out
Marx92x 02-03-2005 02:50 PM

I would not want to mess with anything that could adversely affect the SRS system, so here is my solution:

If you really want the look of a tow hook why not buy whatever neon green NOPI brand tow hook you like and pop rivet it to the plastic part of your bumper. That way it will still stick way out the way you want, but it wont be connected to your frame.

You werent seriously going to have to be towed out of a ditch anyhow, right?

http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/synistrwrx/detail?.dir=1680&.dnm=8b58.jpg&.src=ph I have had mine in place for about 2 years now. I misplaced the cover after I slid off the track at an event,so I said to hell with removing it and haveing a big hole there. I took it and had both the front and rear hooks powder coated red just for the hell of it. My SRS system was disabled along time ago. Sparco seats and Momo steering wheel took care of that problem.

how often do you drive that on the street? i wouldnt suggest advertising removing the SRS system to someone whose going to be daily driving (unless you dont like that person  ), its not safe
WRX Ver.7 02-03-2005 09:33 PM

I drive her nearly every day. There is a 6 point harness and a 6 point cage in the car. I feel completly safe in her. Thank you for the concern. It is appriciated. :)
hkswrxwagon 02-03-2005 10:27 PM

Actually I want it to be functional and I like things to be authentic. My car is far from rice and I am at the track with it on a weekly basis. I love my WRX but alot of the other people on here are A$$HOLES. I believe my question was if anyone had done it not what your opinion was or if you thought it was rice.

You drive on the street with a 6 point harness on? Also, how far is the cage from your head?

There's something very strange about a car which apparently features a 6-pt cage, harness, and tow hooks... but also seems to carry several hundred pounds of show-type audio equipment.
ej20love 02-04-2005 02:40 PM

the term RICE is overdone...

Sorry if you think I'm a whatever, but you got your answer when it was determined that permanently installing a tow hook can mess with your SRS system.

Even though it may look cool and be functional to someone like you who goes to the track, it is not a good idea on a street car. Don't Do It.

That said here is a real solution for you. Install the Aftermarket towhook so that it does no portrude any father than the frame, such as underneath the front of the car. I'm not sure where exactly, you'd have to look. Heres an Illustration...I'm sure this is technically inaccurate. I have no idea where exactly the Unibody Structure lies under a WRX, but this illustrates the concept

The Red hook (haha, Canadian Beer...) is the Stock location. The Green hooks are two possible locations for the aftermarket unit.
