after being in a solid collision with an SUV...
i would have to recommend you only use these for racing purposes.. you could be putting yourself at risk on the street :(

but to each their own...

I'm looking to use it because I got a V4-6 rear bumper w/ the lightweight beam... and the car doesn't go out everyday as of right now.

Are the older, non USDM bumper versions only compatible with a lightweight beam?

The bumper beam wouldn't be the difference between life and death, but it might prevent a lot of damage in a minor accident.
ImprezedRS 02-07-2003 02:10 PM

I have had them for a while, you kinda have to with any Japanese bodykit. Now the other day I tapped someone in fornt of me with the bumper cover off and it just bent the beam back a little that I just used some vise grips to fix.

Now the thing about these bumpers is that in a accident at about 5-10 mph the stock one will take the hit without bending any but you take the chance of the bumper still cracking. Now with the light weights they will bend like a wet noodle in this type of accident. Now in accidents of higher speed it doesn't matter what you have , stock or lightweight, there both gonna get demolished. This beam is only for lowspeed accidents. Here we have laws that are for the insurance companies that the bumpers have to take a 5-10 mph hit without damage. Now in Japan they don't so they get the lightweight beam in Japan, its actually the stock bumper there. So this isn't going to matter in a high speed accident but only low speed ones with which one you have.

It doesn't bother me really since even if I hit someone at 5 mph my Zerosports bumper is just going to shatter like glass.

gonna make a HUUUUUGE DIFFERENCE when your Ins. company catches wind of it tho... :)

that's the sound of you being DROPPED....

I installed mine a few months ago. No problems so far but my stress levels have increased whenever I'm in heavy traffic or in any tight parking situation. The lightweight beam will not withstand a 1 MPH bump. Safety aside, the weight savings is quite substantial (some estimate 35-45lbs) and if you should get into an accident, it only costs about $60-70 to replace the beam although the bumper skin will cost a lot.
ImprezedRS 02-08-2003 01:40 AM

Weight savings are about 45 pds for the front and 50 for the rear, or maybe reverse that
subaru mike 02-08-2003 02:43 AM

Thanks Subie Gal I will take your words of wisdom but when I am going to the tract this spring I will remove the back beam, for now I will see how to dismantle it. God advise especially since I have my system back there

Yes, its alot of weight savings for a very low price... Personally, I would worry less about the front beam and more about the rear. And taking 45lbs off the front of the caras opposed to just the rear or both the front and rear will improve the weight distribution a bit as well.
yebokmj 02-08-2003 01:03 PM

My car
I bumped an SUV at maybe 4 mph with my light wieght bumper and not only was my bumper destroyed but my hood was crumpled as well because it just bumped the crumpling of the bumper beam allowed for the SUV bumper to travel futher back and just bump my hood which then messed it up enough that it had to be replaced. I would strong suggest not doing it to your car.

I was thinking the same thing about weight distribution. I wonder how much of a handling difference you'd feel with a light front/stock back beam vs. light front/light back beam.

I am obsessed with weight reduction so maybe I'll take the chance and get the lightweight front beam.

All im saying is that there's no way some of these body parts can get on the car without using the LW beam or cutting the stock beam. EITHER WAY ITS NOT GONNA BE AS STURDY AS STOCK.

Thats a real good point also considering that my zerosports kit will not fit on the stock one, unless you hack it up
cindergarden 02-09-2003 02:41 PM

ok so my corazon wont fit on my front eithout hacking or buying a LW one , so what do you think hack it or buy a LW, and where is the easier and cheapest place to locate a LW beam ? (im in upstate ny 50miles west of albany and the nearest Subaru Dealer)
moss 02-09-2003 09:52 PM

Subarupart.com $60 for a beam! :D

Hmm... so I guess I'm gonna keep the lightweight beam with my V4-6 rear bumper... maybe I'll look into the lightweight front as well...Weight savings, weee :)

I have both front and rear lightweight bumper beams. If someone hits me, they hit me. THey are sooooooo much lighter than factory beams. You can actually feel the difference in turn in... along with removed A/C etc...
moss 02-28-2003 02:37 PM

Bump up... does anyone one have a picture of the stock front beam and lightweight front beam side by side? It turns out my front beam got messed up in the crash, so it's either spend $230 to get a new one, $100 to get a used one, or $65 to get a lightweight front, I want to see the difference. If I do the lightweight front I need to sign a waiver to my bodyshop.

And the question once more, has anyone gotten into an accident with the beams installed? Is is still safe? Or should I be riding around with a harness and a we-todd helmet :p

help? :(
RimRockaz 03-02-2003 04:10 AM

hey thats weird.. I somehow managed to fit the ver5/6 rear bumper w/o cutting the stock rear bumper beam. :)

I don't have the stock front bumper beam because the FMIC..it saves about 45lbs.
Hondakilla 03-02-2003 01:49 PM

Well is ur rear bumper a Replica or an Authentic? If it is a Replica from lets say Primitive, it was probably made to fit the US Impreza beams
Gerry 03-02-2003 02:09 PM

Most replicas are copies of original JDM parts,Therefor most if not all will need the JDM bumper beam..Here is a pic of the beam installed along with my fmic..If you notice there really is not much protection after a front inpact..Gerry

moss 03-02-2003 07:24 PM

 Holy crap... so all its there for is to hold up the cover...

RimRockaz... AFAIK you dont have to cut the stoc beam, but cut the V5/6 bumper...

Keith
NC2.5RS 03-02-2003 08:02 PM

Templar just put lightweight front and rear bumper beams, if youve got any questions you could ask him im sure.
Gerry 03-02-2003 11:31 PM

Keith..You can basically get the stock bumper support to look like the lightweight beam..You can see where the
lightweight and the usdm bumpers are tacked together. Cut the tack welds off and you have a lightweight bumper.Don't get freaked out when you see how flimsy it is either,, I personally wouldn't use a lightweight bumper on the rear in the street..That's just my oponion,,,Gerry
moss 03-02-2003 11:38 PM

Well that tack welded part is where my stock beam got messed up. Gerry, so you saying that the lightweight will still hold up to a decent amount? The other prespective I'm looking at is one day i will be buying a turbo and will be putting an FMIC in, so should I just go with the lightweight anyway and sign off at the bodyshop? They'll do it they dont care, they just dont want to be liable for it, and the reason im gonna run the lightweight rear is just for the V4-6 rear bumper, its just easier

Keith
DoinkMobb 03-21-2003 08:22 PM

Been thinking about buying F/R bumper beams, but are there any fitment problems on the stock bumpers?

JDM bumpers need JDM beams, but can a USDM bumper use a JDM beam?

At some point I want to buy a ver. 4 front bumper, so I'd need one of these anyway.
Kostamojen 03-22-2003 02:40 AM

They fit on USDM bumpers.
