New car wiper smear part 1

Wraith 12-06-2004 04:15 PM

New car wiper smear
The passenger wiper is smearing water across the window instead of wiping it clean, and it is driving me NUTS! I have a 05 STI with only 960 miles on it, and it has done it since I bought the car. It only does it right where it stops on the driver's side and meets with the driver's wiper. I'm wondering if there was some type of adhesive from some type of new car sticker that is still on the winshield.

I tried using windex and newspaper vigorously, didn't fix it. My next thought is to use my 3M adhesive remover, I'm just worried it will leave a haze on my winshield.
Calamity Jesus 12-06-2004 04:18 PM

Is the blade lifting off as it goes over that spot? Can you bend the blade a little at the edge to put a little more pressure on it?
supermarkus 12-06-2004 04:20 PM

Mine does it too, but I'm short so it doesn't bother my vision. I've tried cleaning my windshield with Spray Away and newspaper, then rainexing it with the wipes. Still does it. Time to ditch the crumby stock refills I guess.
Wraith 12-06-2004 04:23 PM

yeah I can try bending it, seems like there is some chemical holding the water on the winshield though.

Supermarkus, I find it funny that we both have 05 STI's with this problem.... looks like we may have found a quirk for this model.
supermarkus 12-06-2004 06:46 PM

If that's the worst of it, I'll take it. I'm glad we aren't having knock issues or steering rack funkiness etc. Now if I could only find some cheap wheels that fit and don't look like arse.
nqwan 12-06-2004 06:48 PM

have you tried cleaning the blade itself? it may be time to replace the wiper.
Ketchup 12-06-2004 06:49 PM

Take it back to the dealer and make them fix it.
WRXplatinum 12-06-2004 08:49 PM

Id make the dealer fix it
pheidrich 12-06-2004 08:53 PM

I've got a 2005 WRX which had the EXACT same problem. I figured that instead of wasting a bunch of time at the dealer, I would just try changing the wiper blade and if that wasn't the problem, well I would have a spare blade for when mine finally wore out. It turns out that a $4 Anco blade from Walmart did the trick. Problem solved!

BTW, it was the driver's side blade that I replaced, not the passenger's.
akaG-reg 12-06-2004 09:53 PM

Sorry, kinda double posted
akaG-reg 12-06-2004 09:56 PM

Here's one more 05 complainer. At any speed my drivers side streaks right in my field of vision. And that really tweaks me out for some reason. getting some refill blades solved it, But I don't really like putting parts like that into a six month old car.
Uncle Scotty 12-06-2004 10:00 PM

Clean the windshield with Bon Ami and replace the blades......works like a champ.

The detailer at the dealership likely used the same rag to clean the windshield and the tires and got tire shine on the glass.....
gjhsu 12-06-2004 10:00 PM

I'm still on my original set on an 02, bought in Oct 01... and they're just now starting to smear, so it's time to get new ones :(

Refills should be changed about twice a year anyway. More often if you live in a harsh climate. Don't expect wear items like wiper blades to be long lived. Boo hoo, you spent 7 bucks on your car.

They sucked from day one, as others have said. Subaru cut a corner and spec'd cheap wiper blades, that was my point. I suppose if my brakes didn't work properly I should forget about it because they are wear items
jejiv 12-07-2004 12:30 AM

I'm having the same problem with smearing with drivers side wiper. I couldn't see a darn thing when it rain this past weekend here in So Cal.

Nowhere in my post did I say anything about ignoring potential safety issues. I was just razzing you for whining about addressing the problem like it was a total burden to replace an obvious wear item. Luckily, mine weren't bad out of the box, it took a couple of road trips and mountain passes to kill them.

Have a friend who works at a dealer, they replace tons of them.. along with window gussets that whistle on the freeway.

i am gladly accepting donations if you're looking to get rid of the rims.

That is comedy!! I have an 05 STi and it does the exact same thing. I raised the drivers side wiper arm up, pulled the rubber blad out and reversed the blade. Works like a charm now.
DaveTaylor 12-07-2004 08:54 AM

Exact same problem on my 05 RS wagon, big verticle streak is left by the passenger wiper right in front of the driver's face. I guess I will take it up with the dealer at the first service :( . Not a biggy, but, not what you expect from new wiper blades.
majmun 12-07-2004 09:11 AM

The blades that came on your car aren't new. Try to find the build date of your car and you'll see how old they really are. I replace mine about once a quarter since AZ seems to chew them up pretty quickly.
akaG-reg 12-07-2004 09:13 AM

Vision sounds like a safety issue, and wear items should not be worn with 2mi on the car.
sticky tires 12-07-2004 10:03 AM

Wow, I have the same problem on my 05 STi. It's on the driver side wiper though. Hmmm :furious:
supermarkus 12-07-2004 10:22 AM

Agreed, so spend the petty cash and fix the problem. Also, mileage may not have anything to do with how the refills age. My brother puts ~400 miles on his car a year, but still has to change his refills all the time. Especially since he parks outside under a tree with pollen, sap, inclement weather, heat, etc. all beating on the wipers. All of those factors contribute to the accellerated aging of those tiny pieces of rubber, weather you drive the car or not. Like one poster pointed out above, look at the build date on your door sill, the refills may not be as fresh as you think. Ever let a car sit all winter in Alaska or all summer in Arizona? Even with very few miles on them, you'll have to change the refills.

Where can I buy Bon Ami at?

Edit: Nevermind I found it
dchou 12-07-2004 08:00 PM

I had the same problem as well. All I did to fix the problem was wash the window well AND wash the blades with the same soap solution that you use to wash your car. Worked like a charm. If you wipe down the actual blade once in a while that really helps keep the blades working longer.

Wanted to give an update since I started this thread. I went to the auto parts store and got el cheapo Trico wiperblades, and some rain-x. Installed the blades and applied the rain-x to the winshield, now it is crystal clear like it should have been when I bought the car. My lesson learned is that even though my car had 6 miles on it when I bought it, the wipers were still crap.
CletusTheDwarf 02-07-2005 09:59 AM

good to know, my 05 WRX had the exact same problem. i think it's a problem with the driver side wiper not getting rid of the extra left by the passenger side one tho. i've never had a new car before...wouldn't a deal get frustrated with you if you brought it back to complain simply about a wiper blade? I also wonder because I can't bright it to the dealer I bought it at. I bought it at home and now i'm back at school.
Carterw 08-23-2005 09:42 PM

I have the same problem with my 05 Sti. The wiper on the drivers side smears instead of wipes. I like the idea of reversing the blade. Will try that before taking it to the 'stealer'.
Jeff B 08-23-2005 10:27 PM

I had the same problem with my 05 Subaru, but bought some Bosch wipers(were recommended on this site). Fixed the problem immediately, which was great because it was such an annoyance. I think I may try some Rain X as well. Anyone know how well it works with snow?
MattDell 08-23-2005 10:33 PM

Wiper blades are considered a "wear item" and can be replaced for free under warranty. If any dealer gives you a problem with this, direct them to Subaru's web site. They have the warranty listed on there and it explicitly states that windshield wipers are considered a wear item.

Clean the blades with washer fluid.

I can't believe it took 28 posts for someone to bring up the excellent product that is Rain-X. The stuff is great! You don't even need to use wipers once you are at anything above 25 miles an hour. The rain just flows off. It is like engaging the hyper drives...
PoopRSkupe 08-24-2005 10:19 AM

get some Bosch Micro Edge Excels, and be done with it for a good long while. they are definately worth it.
