Getting Air To New Ebay TMIC part 1

Getting Air To New Ebay TMIC
I just bought a new Ebay TMIC and Perrin Hoses. I had to cut the Ypipe and do the extension to get it to fit, but now I'm wondering about getting air to the I/C itself. The new TMIC is huge, and I think it may already be rubbing on the air splitter from the hood scoop. What have you guys done to get more air from the scoop to the TMIC? any write ups that I couldn't find that you guys would be so kind as to give me a link to. Thanks.

...sti scoop/splitter
sperry7 10-25-2006 11:36 PM

^^ Scotty that doesn't cover the whole area of the ic though right? Or is that just the best option in your mind?

I read a thread where a guy used some weather stripping and some zip ties along with a STi splitter and it looked decent. Sealed perfectly looked like. I think it was the dude from P&L motorsports. (on his site)

I have that exact setup...SSAC TMIC and STI splitter. I found it to be the easiest way to seal the IC, and it only blocks about an inch (if that) on each side and less on the back & front. Also the STI splitter is noticeably bigger than the stock WRX one, so it does make quite a bit of difference. Only thing I had to do was trim the rubber just a bit on the splitter.

I'm running with out one for now. In the future I will probably get the APS one but haven't found a vendor with one in stock though. The one from APS is supposed to be bigger and fit better than the STi one. And are you running a Sti scoop? If not that would be a great mod to get more air to that large tmic.

I used an 04 style for the 02 hood and the 04 sti splitter. It worked well while it was on the car, went fmic. The APS splitter is no more, they stop makeing it a while ago.

do any of you know if the zero/sports splitter will fit with the stock bugeye scoop?
Oldfart Racer 10-27-2006 07:13 AM

IIRC They make two of them one for the USDM and one for the JDM. The us should fit, but it is no bigger than the stock one. The JDM is for the lager scoop.

I have the same IC and couldnt find the best splitter for a long time. I just installed the APS unit and it is perfect. Although the opening is not as large as the top of the IC, it is the largest opening in splitters on the market (I can only confirm that by what I have read on this site). The splitter comes with a rubber shroud, which is too tall to fit properly. I made a small slit on the two back corners and when the hood closes, the shroud is pressed back further exposing more of the IC core and allowing the hood to close. After driving for two days I checked to see if it was rubbing at all and I was happily surprised to see that the shroud is now permanently bent backwards. If anyone wants a picture let me know.
I recommend this splitter 100%.

Also, beware that the screws that hold the splitter piece to the hood might rub on the top of the IC core (mine do right on the top welds).

can I see a pic of what you did? I also have an APS splitter and was about to cut it up to try and get more flow to the back of the IC, my drivers side bottom screw rubbed when the engine torques over  so I just took it out
sperry7 12-22-2006 11:23 PM

I second the APS pic... if you go with fmic let me know I'll snatch it up right quick!
Wiznaz 12-23-2006 01:39 AM

I am thinking of just removing the stock splitter and applying weatherstrip to the top of the IC layered to seal against the hood. What do you guys think?

Okay, found the link to Jorge from P&L's writeup on how he did it. http://projectwrx.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=27

Looks pretty quality to me I'll try it this summer when I get my new IC.
emeessen 12-23-2006 04:49 PM

Ok here are the pics of what I am talking about. As you can see, the back part of the shroud has been pressed backwards by the contact with my IC. I cut two slits on each corner about a half an inch long to better allow the shroud to fold backwards.

^^nicely done!
emeessen 12-23-2006 05:38 PM

And, in case it hasn't been said already, the APS splitter unit is a discontinued item. If you are looking to purchase one contact GNV Motorsports, that is where I got mine. Also, check the classifieds.

Ok, I posted my pics to that thread as well (^^^ a thread about the same topic which I posed a question last month). As you can see there was a significant issue with using these oversized tmic properly. I think this fix is the best it can get without custom fabrication.
PeteDucati 12-24-2006 11:51 AM

Here's my ghetto fabulous rig.. it was done back in '04 and is still doing fine.

I used a sheet of aluminized steel along with some rubber mat you use under office chairs. Total investment was around $10. I never got around to painting it and I don't maintain it. I'll tend to the rust one of these years. It completely covers the entire IC. My HyperFlow now looks like this..

^ wow I've never seen fans on a TMIC like a radiator. How does it work? It seems like it might help in stop and go but on the highway it seems like it would restrict flow. Just my guess though.
yelWRXlow1 12-24-2006 07:18 PM

So Im lost. If you have an STi then you are good to go with the Ebay TMIC? Seeing how i obviously already have an STi splitter/hoodscoop?
emeessen 12-24-2006 09:24 PM

Yes you can get the Ebay tmic for your STi. However, the splitter opening is not even close to as large as the top of the ic. This is why people have been having trouble finding the best solution. After market splitters like the Zerosports one are not too large either, and the largest stock splitter is the JDM version 7 splitter. The APS unit is the largest.

Someone several years ago did some testing with the factory WRX TMIC. He actually had a temperature probe installed after the IC (it must be nice to have toys like that). On the highway the fans didn't hurt cooling, and they brought post IC temps amazingly close to ambient during stop and go traffic.

That's the thread with the tech info (post #7) - a search in the 2.0 forum for "SPAL" will get you some other threads.
PARANOID56 12-24-2006 11:38 PM

wow, that link brought up old memorys of that :D i almost forgot that we used to be able to attach images :D I remember reading that thread when it was started :D

For the poster above, what fans are those?
PeteDucati 12-24-2006 11:46 PM

They're 6.5" SPAL fans.. here's a cut and paste from a post I did last week with some other useful info if anyone here is interested. They're pretty much fit under the scoop perfectly - 6" would be a "safer" size. I closed the hood and positioned the fan by sticking my arm through the scoop. Figured that I had to overlap the bottom weld of the IC a bit with the fan or the shroud would hit the hood.

http://www.the-fan-man.com/shop/frh-p-99.html?cPath=30

I also ordered three bags of nylon mounting straps - since I always screw up during installs. The relay kit comes with fantasitcally detailed instructions (for people who are too tired to think during installs).

Here's a joint that makes custom thermostats (http://www.thomasregister.com/olc/15840002/snap.htm) in the event you want the fans to automatically come on during the hotter months.. I haven't called them yet, they're only ~4 miles from my crib. I'll probably try one if my burden ever gets rolling again.

For those who don't feel like clicking on the links and adding everything up, expect to spend around $150 and several hours to install everything.
