I thought that AWD was banned in the touring category....Isnt that why Audi got moved. Or am i totally off:) Good to see that Subaru is getting into the game though.
pio!pio! 12-18-2001 02:12 PM

AWD is not banned in Touring..forced induction is banned in Touring.

You still get a weight handicap for AWD in Touring just as in GT.

So what hopes does the WRX have in GT? can a 2 liter turbo engine reliably output 400-500 hp? (with a nice torque curve?)

Maybe they will let an STi engine and tranny swap :)
SSJ Char 12-18-2001 02:13 PM

Good. Acuras been stutting around like they own the place.
Strepto 12-18-2001 02:19 PM

Just because Subaru is adding contingency doesn't mean someone will actually build a car to race in the series. The Impreza and SVX have been on the allowed list for TC & GT before, but nobody has put the money into trying to make a competetive vehicle.
10th Warrior 12-18-2001 02:26 PM

time to roll up and smoke some S4s :D ok, probably not, but it would still be cool.
ChrisW 12-18-2001 02:46 PM

That's interesting.

I wonder if the 2.5 can be competitive against the acura, except in bad weather of course.

Also, I wonder if the variable valve heads off the JDM EJ20 would fit on the 2.5?
10th Warrior 12-18-2001 03:35 PM

i know the rules are different, but in GS the RS couldn't even come close to an ITR. that's why their gone now :)
Onederer 12-18-2001 07:28 PM

Are there any Subaru in the Motorola cup series?
I know some teams come from there as a developmental series on the way to touring or GT. But it still takes lots of money and some test drivers who know how to give good feedback, to be able to make the move. Maybe Roger Foo should dump his Civic, and make the suby move. That guy drives like a mad man, in an underpowered car, and smokes lots of BMW, and what not.
Subaru announced plans to establish a bonus fund of potentially $8,000 for drivers finishing in the top three in World Challenge races driving an Impreza 2.5 in Touring or a WRX in GT. A class win would be worth $5,000 to the driver, second place worth $2,000 and a third-place finish worth $1,000. Failing to finish in the top three is not a total washout, as the top Subaru finisher would still earn $1,000, the next $500 and the third-highest Subaru finisher $250.
The pay outs are similar to SoloII. If you don't place high but your the top Subaru. You get $1000, $500 2nd Subaru and $250 for the third Subaru. That's sweet! Heck just get together a 2.5RS and just make the field and you'll make $1000 if your the only Subaru. I see 2.5RS's and WRX's running next year. :D
Tkacik 12-19-2001 10:41 AM

Gary Sheenan...where are you? I think that you should run the Rex in this series instead:)
JamesC 12-19-2001 11:44 AM

I can't wait for someone to step up but can't imagine the difficulty involved. Going up against the likes of Champion and RealTime isn't going to be easy - nevermind the rest of the field who have been at it for a few years. Champion's S4 "Competition's" (RS4 with a few race parts in a sedan body) were supplied by Audi Sport in the UK, just like one other competitor (Baker?) who just couldn't place. We're talking crate cars supplied in almost identical form, well let's say 85-90%. Not to mention the total purse for Galati was only $31,700. Obviously sponsors will weigh heavily in the support...

I'm not sure Subaru is there yet..? Believe me though, someone steps up and I'll be there with my Suby flag at Sebring, Miami and Petit Le Mans/Road Atlanta!

I've raced in WC over the past 3 years in a Honda (not full time). Then I got to thinking how good the RS could fit in the Touring car class with the standing starts and all and now this! I am now actively persuing putting a program together with the RS. Maybe my team will need a place to stay when (if?) we go down to Road Atlanta! Here is hoping it comes together! It would be great to meet people from the club this way.

TimStevens 12-19-2001 12:44 PM

Well Dave, if you can pull it off, you'll have plenty of people cheering you on ;)

Hell, we could probably even get an I-Club fund going if you're serious :)

dave bruener 12-19-2001 01:46 PM

I am very serious and it is great to have support! Maybe someone on the club can help me sell the Honda to finance the new project. It is a '92 prelude VTEC set up for World Challenge but it would work in E prod or ITS with an engine swap--and I have the engine. Tons of spares too.
Thanks for the positve feedback.

Hey everyone,

We're looking at it. It's going to be VERY expensive to be competitive, though. Send your donations to...;)

Dave or Gary,

You have 2 crew volunteers at Miami, Sebring and/or Road Atlanta should you need them ;)

I'm quite sure I could get more (with some experience) if needed.

Keep my email and let me know if it's ever needed :)

Thanks for the offer of help, James. I will definitely keep your e-mail on my list. This is the kind of support I had in mind--I wasn't looking for money or anything like that from the club as might have been implied. However, I think it would be a great opportunity to promote the club with graphics on the car and maybe some folks there to set up a booth or table and answer questions. Maybe meets could be aranged at race venues. Just a thought.

I want to see a cobb tuning 2.5RS out there as a test platform for further development of the ej25. :) How cool would that be?
TBreu007 12-21-2001 09:37 AM

I'm yet another WRX owner/racer that would love to help out at Sebring and/or Homestead if everything works out. I'm going to both races anyway.

Tim
dave bruener 12-21-2001 10:28 AM

Yeah, midwayman, that is my thought exactly. The plans I am working on revolve around the RS in the Touring Car category. The rules are very specific about what kind of modifications are allowed regarding the engine. I have been in contact with the SCCA about it.
I just see such an advantage in the standing starts with a Subie--and B&M shifters has a "Holeshot Award" for the person who gains the most positions from the start of the race to the end of the first lap--$250. I figure AWD is a huge advantage.

And to everyone offering to help out, THANKS A TON!! Everything is in such a preliminary phase right now I can't say what exactly will happen. It is so great to have so many people excited about the project and that really motivates me. Thanks again and I am keeping names of all who are offering to help--you may be hearing from me!
TimStevens 12-21-2001 10:36 AM

he he... if you're ever racing in the North East, I'd be willing to help out too ;)

If they decided to come to Mid-Ohio. Count me in. :D
pio!pio! 12-21-2001 12:15 PM

If they are in the Los Angeles area, I'm in too! Although I have no machanic experience I want to help somehow
dave bruener 12-21-2001 12:21 PM

nhalterman-there is a race scheduled at Mid-Ohio for the end of june or beginning of july. I'll be there one way or the other and there is also a race at Road America--that's home for me. Maybe you can make that one too!
I know there is one at Laguna Seca--that is a haul but I have done it before.
Ru fan 12-22-2001 11:56 AM

Count me in if you are in the Northeast! Again, I have no real skills, but I can fetch a mean bottle of water.:) I would love to see a subie race in Speedvision!

Dave if you are going to be racing at RA I think you can count on at least a few of us from this area.

Oh yeah! You'd have a slew of helpers in any OH venue. I suggest an "L" with an RS drivetrain. That is, unless they make you add a ton of weight for AWD anyway.
