good car cover? part 1

DieselClown 11-15-2004 10:37 PM

good car cover?
I've been leaving my car at my girlfriend's and when her garage is full, I have to park on her driveway, but my car gets filthy because of construction nearby blowing dust all over my ride. What kind of car cover is good for some rain? There's an overhang ourside of the garage so it's covered on the top, just not the sides. I'd like to keep it under a 100 bucks. Is subaru good?

i searched this topic extensively on autopia.com, and from what i've found, car covers (in general) tend to scratch up your paint (especially outside, where the wind/breeze will shift the cover around, rubbing dirt/dust into your clear coat). there are exceptions, i.e. if you wash your car every couple of days, or cover it up in a garage for storage. neither seems to be too realistic for a daily driver, IMHO.

i'm pretty sure there are plenty of covers around that are either waterproof or water-resistant....just a matter of picking what's most important to you (keeping your car dry vs. possibly micro-marring your clearcoat).

hope this helps....good luck!

Get an OEM cover, I have used one for over a year now, and I have no scratches.
Kean 11-16-2004 10:51 AM

Personally, I consider the "factory" car cover little more than a shield against dust. I've never left it on when it rains so I couldn't tell you if it repels water that well. However, if all you're looking for is a fair-weather protector against dust/dew, then the OEM one works quite well. Keep in mind that you'll need to wipe any particles from the surface of your paint before covering your car. If not, you'll get fine scratches in your finish as Chewie explained. I mostly use mine for garage storage so wind is not a factor. I just make sure to go over the car with a "spray detailer" before I put it away (I usually only take the WRX on the weekends).

......If you want more protection or good material with a softer inner lining, you might want to consider covers made from Noah fabric or perhaps one of the other types Kimberly-Clark provides:

There are several car-cover companies that use this material but the price may be more than what you're looking to spend.

Since car covers are the topic and I have looking to see if its a good idea, Im going to ask. I live in NY and this winter my car will be outside probably in a couple of snow storms...Sad, I know. Now, I take it its not a good idea to cover the car? Next year i may build a place to put it but can't this winter...thanks..

I have California Car Cover. I like it compared to the Walmart/generic types that you can buy. Just make sure when you put the cover that your car is clean/just washed and indoor. I don't recommend putting the car cover outside because of contaminants (dust, sun, etc) that can damage the car cover and your paint. Also, do not put the cable lock thing if you are going to leave the car outside. With the wind blowing hard, it will damage the paint.

The best one that I have found is a big condomn type car cover where you actually drive your car inside and the car is fully protected...I'll find pics.

Yeah some pics would be really helpful and also where to get one.

I bought mine from www.carcoverworld.com. They've got a wide variety....I think I paid about $170 shipped for mine....unfortunately, I don't really use it anymore. Kind of ended up being a waste of money, but they are great covers.

Even the full covers ( Car Jacket, Car Capsule, etc.) are only recommended for indoor storage. In general, you don't want to put a car cover on a car parked outside. You are better off just letting the car get dirty and then washing it. Car covers on outside cars will really scratch up your paint.
blaznasn 11-19-2004 10:12 PM

im using a one from the last gen accord, my bro doesn't use it so i use it. It covers my car nicely since the accord is much bigger. The inside doesn't scracth my car either, it's some kind of microfiber. Hasn't deteriorated in the years of use and I do use it outside under a carport, my bro did also.

i live in albuquerque NM where the sun plays a huge factor in ruining my paint. anyway i just purchased a car cover and i hope that it will not scratch up my paint. I figure if i take it off when the winds blows then i will be alright. i do park my car out side just about all of the time but am planning to build a car-port soon. anyway i hope i did not just waste my money.
ludecrous 06-20-2005 03:10 PM

I agree with the scratch comments and will say from first hand experience that with a black car using a car cover outside (not in a garage) on a daily basis that you will start to see small scratches in your clear coat. After a while I just found it less hastle to leave the cover off. Maybe on a silver or white car it would not matter.
Kean 06-20-2005 03:16 PM

It depends on the quality of the cover and the cleanliness of the vehicle. With a good cover and a freshly cleaned car, you should be fine. With a dirty car..... well, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
ludecrous 06-20-2005 03:19 PM

^^ that's true, but even with a black car, high quality cover, you would have to wash your car every two days to stop the little scratches... if your into washing your car every 2 days then that's cool.

I bought mine used on here and it is perfect! Very strong and well fitted to my car. Check out www.stratmosphere.com

Great cover! Love mine, fits perfectly and never has scratched my paint(even when the car is less than clean). It's a little pricey.... but after seeing my friends 75lbs. american bulldog run over the car front to back chasing a cat, (with no scratches I might add!) I never regret spending the money. Plus it has a lifetime warranty.

Of course, this isn't a practical solution for most people.

I have the OEM car cover and it's great. Never scratched my car even if put on dirty and it's a perfect fit so it looks great with it on. I like the fact it's not waterproof and that's because it allows proper ventilation. Last thing you want is moisture building up underneith and causing something to grow. Plus, I can put it on while my car is still hot and the heat from the scoop can still escape slowly.

However, you must take care of the car cover. If you wash it, use the tumble style washers. Mine got caught in the agitator and tore the crap out of it. Also, air dry it. Don't even put it in the dryer even if it's low heat. Mine had pin hole melts every here and there.

I too have the OEM cover and found the material to be of mediocre quality at best. However, it works fine as a dust shield when my car is freshly washed before I store it in the garage for the week. I suppose it's all relative, but placing a cover on a dirty car will leave some scratches especially in breezy/windy conditions (or even just by installing it). ......again, it's all relative to the quality of your paint before you cover it (i.e. you may not notice them). While the OEM cover may be suitable for some, there are other options I would consider depending on the needs of the user (and how picky they are about their finish).

We have two older corvettes at my house. Both are covered, first by a very soft cover as to not scratch the paint, then by a waterproof cover. It seems to do the trick.

get the subaru one if your a baller
placing a cover on a dirty car will leave some scratches
Sorry, I forgot. I guess I should have mentioned I wash my car like 1-3 times per week. So, like, after a rain shower or just sitting w/o the cover on for longer than 2 days, I consider my car dirty.
