HID problem
Dont know whats going on
If i start my car with the headlight switch in the on position, the HIDs work fine
But if i start it with the lights in the off position, they wont turn on

How are they wired? If you just wired them directly to the stock headlight harness that may be the problem. The ground side goes through the headlight switch, and the switch and associated wiring cannot properly handle the high startup current required by the HIDs. When you start the car with the switch on the contacts are already closed so there may be barely enough juice to turn the HIDs on, but turning the switch on afterward doesn't do the trick.
The solution is to either add a relay on the ground side, or just connect the negative side of the ballasts directly to chassis ground or battery negative.

not sure how they are wired
just bought the whole thing from hid4less
after i start it with the lights in the on position, i can turn the lights off and then back on again without a problem
also my foglights are HIDs and they work fine either way
they use the same type of ballasts

So from what you said I assume you got them with a plug-in harness, which would mean they are wired as I said. When you turn them off and back on, how long are you waiting in between? If you turn them right back on the current draw will be much less than when they are first turned on after being off for a while, that is probably why they will go back on.
As for the fogs they are wired differently and there is already a relay in the fog light circuit, so the stock wiring will be sufficient (barely).

still confused
i tried it again and and sat in the car for over a minute
the lights will still turn on
i turned the key onto the on position without storting the engine. The lights are in the on position but i can turn the lights on still. they only wont turn on if the engine is started with lights in the off position
dont know if that matters,
if not then i guess ill splice the ground of the ballast into the chasis ground and see what happens

I'm having problems with my HID as well. Its really wierd, when I turn on the headlights only one HID bulb will turn on. If I'm lucky they both will turn on, but that is rare. I would have to turn on and off the lights several times before I can get both of them on at the same time. I'll try that ground mod, sounds like the trick. I'll keep you guys posted.
| TaiChih | 10-04-2002 12:52 AM |
make sure you have the wiring spliced in correctly. or is this PNP? You may have a faulty connection or may have the power and ground backwards.
| Mulder | 10-04-2002 08:11 AM |
If power and ground to the ballasts are reversed the HIDs will not work at all and in fact the ballasts may be damaged. So if they come on at any time it is not a polarity problem.
Usually problems with the HIDs being intermittent, not starting reliably, flickering etc. are due to insufficient power available. The startup current required by each ballast is around 15-20 amps, and if they are wired plug-and-play into the factory headlight connectors the common switched ground is trying to handle the combined current of both ballasts through the headlight switch and some very thin wiring. This system was never intended for HIDs and just can't deal with all that current. The result is flaky operation.
That's why you need an additional relay or a direct ground.

I just called HID4Less and they told me that disconnecting the day time running lights should fix everything
| Mulder | 10-04-2002 04:26 PM |
Maybe, although the usual problem with HIDs with the DRLs still connected is just that they never go off. Anytime you install HIDs you should permanently disable the DRLs by disconnecting the control module next to the glovebox.
If you do this and it fixes your problem I would still strongly recommend rewiring the ground side of the ballasts to improve the HID reliability as well as to protect the factory wiring and switch. But in the end it's your car so it will be up to you.

When grounding it, should i just cut the old ground and connect it to the chasis. Or should i add an additional wire from the chasis to the ballast
| Mulder | 10-04-2002 06:27 PM |
You would cut the existing connection and move the ground to chassis or battery negative. The old low beam switched ground would no longer be connected.

mulder,
I'll bug you on two threads;) . I am eletrically challanged and make no bones about it. When looking at the ballasts- one side has a thick cable leading into the low beam directly, the other side a black and red wire up to a relay(?). Is this the negative side of the ballast (red/black wire)? Do you cut the black wire and ground it to the chassis?
Thanks
Big Sky

Well the big fat wire is the output side of the ballast that connects to the HID bulb, there will be a matching connector on it so a no-brainer here.
The input side is the red and black wires. The red can be connected to the headlight common power, same as the stock lights. The black wire would be connected to ground.
If you have a wiring diagram that came with your HIDs that you can post or email to me I can take a look at it to be sure the above is correct.

HID question ?
My hi-beam indicator is now on all the time since the HID conversion. Do you have this little quirk and if you do how can I fix this.

This is not normal. It indicates something is wrong with the wiring, most likely a cross between the low and high beam circuits. Check your wiring carefully, make sure the switched grounds for low beam are actually going to the low beams, and same for high beams.

I got one for ya... I installed a McCulloch H7 kit in may Morettes this weekend and now my HIDs turn on when I release the parking brake but turn off when I engage it. Just like it should with the DRL in.
Heres the kicker, I removed the DRL module six months ago!
Whats up?

Which "module" did you remove? If it was the one under the hood by the passenger strut tower that's not the actual control module, just a load resistor. If you install HIDs you have to disconnect the DRL module next to the glovebox to eliminate them permanently.

great info in here. Where under the glovebox is the control unit? I removed the one under the hood. I'm waiting for my HID to get here :)

The module is to the right of the glovebox. It's easiest to access with the glovebox removed. It is a rectangular module with a multi-pin white connector, somewhere on the module should be a sticker that says "DRL".

Hahahahah same EXACT problems I was having 3 months ago and mulder saved me too! Mulder you tha man!
Just to update you on my never ending light fetish... this weekend I'm replacing the worthless factory fogs with PIAA 80proXT's, rewiring the sidemarkers as LED turn signals, and throwing in these 'lil LED citylights into my morettes...

Actually, most manufacturers now have dual beam HIDs for their cars. BMW, Porsche, etc...
I've seen the Porsche ones in action...I was driving the 996 and flicked on the high beams for fun and it was HID as well. Quite nice I must say.

Here's a question for ya (gonna try the grounding solution as my HIDs installed yesterday don't always turn on together)...when I turn my fogs on the high beam indicator comes on. What is up with that?

You have a wiring issue with your headlights somewhere. Hard to say more without seeing the car but you need to look at any wiring changes that have been made from stock and find what is crossed- headlight harness adapters or spliced wiring, foglight mod etc.

i have had My hids in my morettes for like 9 months now without a problem, then a few days ago the one started to cut out, but if i turned the lights off and back on it would work again, and now its doing it with both lights, anyone know what could be causing this to happen?? cuz now its kinda hard for me to drive at night since they keep cutting out, if anyone knows, please let me know, thanks
| Mulder | 01-05-2003 10:40 PM |
Check your wiring carefully and make sure nothing has worked loose, been damaged, corroded etc. Wiggle everything around and tap on the ballasts with the lights on to see if there is a mechanical intermittent. Cold weather will make any latent problems show up, and salt spray from the recent snow can mess things up too.
How are your ballasts grounded? If they're just connected to the headlight connectors try moving the ballast negative directly to the battery negative terminal.

they are grounded to the car, not to the lights
