Home made body kit part 1

Home made body kit
Has any one tried to make their own Body kit or front lip etc...?
I am thinking of making a mold and doing fiberglass. However, I don't know how to make it symmetrical other than by eye.
Any suggestions?

Hey now, don't mess with the "Keepin it Real auto club" ;)

LOL! I think I'll just save my money and get a Trial kit.
Seriously though, anyone ever done this and had it look good?

bumper
I've done body work (fiberglass, body filler, dents, etc.) for almost 11 years and last Spring I tried to fabricate my own front bumper from scratch and it looked so horrible, in my opinion. It's very very difficult to do and even more difficult to do to perfection, not to mention a lot of money.

A tip: when you're making your mold, throw it down on paper in all views first, that way you can fold it over on itself to get more symetrical than eyeballing it. Just work that idea more and more into the mold until you can't use it anymore and that can get you closer to a having a more perfect mold and finished product.

oh yea on more thing, if you ever need some advice just remember this; fiberglass--then sand--fiberglass--then sand--fiberglass--then sand--fiberglass--then sand--fiberglass--then sand

Forget it. Thanks, that's all I needed to know.
However, what if I bought a mold? then I could fabricate parts and sell them if I'm good enough right?

Where you gonna buy a mold?? Most companies make the mold so they can make the money, but good luck.

as for cofindence building you guys are great  ha!

If your totually turned off now from what is said what id do is buy a used lip. Maybe ask around for someone who has a cracked lip, or whatever. Ad onto that one with your new design. Like said above working with fibor glass is tuff in many ways. the prob. that I had was getting the resin and hardner mixed properly. Id say buy a clump of clay and mold your idea into it, bake it, oil it, and lay your glass on that. If you get a used lip screw screws halfway in and clay on top of that iwth also using wire mesh. and use all of that for a mold.

also do a search for mold making, fibor glass work, etc.

and maybe get measuring tools for such a job, and take your time with it all. let it take months!

when its all done and everyone is loving it be sure to link this thread to it.

You guys are lots of fun.
I decided to hold off on doing one my self. I may however get some materials and just play around and learn some stuff.

Thanks all.

Thats probably the first tommy kaira front bumper that i actually like. The one they made for the GC8 is hideous as well as a couple other cars. ick!!
subster 01-18-2004 10:30 PM

I like that the fogs are actually a reasonable size for a road car.
collegedropout 01-19-2004 01:16 AM

Instead of heavy wood and fiberglass. Make a mold out of clay (kind of like when they make a concept car model), cast in plaster, and then do a vacuum formed kit. That would probably result in something. If you wanted to really be cool, go to the local art district and get one of those "Arteeests" to mold your kit in to clay.
subster 01-19-2004 09:06 AM

I am an arteest. That's a nice complement. :) I am thinking about that clay thing and that would definitely work the best. Thanks!

I have been doing things for a couple of years now, starting with flat panels and am now up to small motorcycle parts. I eventually will move on to body kits. The expense to do it right is what will really get you.

What most of the pros use is poly-foam and balsa. From drawings, MANY drawings you cut out cross sections fill inbetween with foam and sculpt away, then either glass it or use some type of sandable surfacer. You make this as perfect as possible. There is your positive for your mold and you're about -300$ and counless hours.

Next you make the mold (many ways to do it) seperate it, take out the original, slap some glass in the mould/moulds. Take it out and hope it fits. Now you should be -600 to -1000$ in the hole.

My suggestion is not to do it unless you plan to do it as a job or very intense hobby.

I started like you though, just wanted to mess with it, it's verry fun specially for an arteest. Now I make switch panels, air splitters, bike ferrings etc. for locals and friends. Fun stuff.

I have not seen one Tommy Kaira kit that has looked good. Ever. How do those things sell?
kalbo-1 01-19-2004 04:39 PM

Kinda looka like an offspring of an RSX that had a threesome with a Pontiac Granprix and Legacy?

I guess I'm just not feeling it.
zombiedog 01-19-2004 08:18 PM

Yah good call on the Pontiac, looks like the Aztec designers were allowed to make a body kit...
