How do I lower an 04 WRX Seat? part 1

SilverRush 03-12-2004 12:03 PM

How do I lower an 04 WRX Seat?
I did a couple searches and found some information but not much.

I want to lower the driver's seat as much as possible so I fit better while wearing a helmet. Is there any mod I can do to the stock rails or does anyone know of a US company that supplies rails that could do this. I have no problem loosing the height adjustment feature on the stock rails as I will always have it cranked as low as possible.

Here is what I am looking for but from the US.

reading is key
You can use that part, because iirc the only issue using that part is that you lose the height adjustability, which you just stated you didn't need anyways. Shop around, call shops and ask them questions. You're on the right path, just call ahead before ordering and be assured that this will work as you expect.

p.s. just to clarify I mean the passenger seat from the japanese WRX, again, just a clarification.Hope it works out and...Enjoi!

I'll give this a BUMP...because I need head space big time!
FKell 03-17-2004 12:35 PM

hmmm... I could use soom head space as well (being 6'2 makes it tight)

Just out of curiosity you guys with headroom issues do you have the moonroof? Because that takes a good 2-3 inches off the headroom.

From a performance standpoint, having the moonroof sucks as well.

Yes I have moonroof, it's 1.2 inches lower...dealer told me it was the same at the time and didn't have one on the lot that I could try...I took there damn word...

what exactly to do you mean?
Grintch 03-17-2004 02:40 PM

Moonroof & headroom
Moon(sun)roofs add weight and lowers rigidity - thus bad for performance. Yes those damn dealers are always saying they don't make a difference in headroom, but I have yet to find a car they didn't take at least 1-2" of headroom away (I'm 6'4").

I would also be interested in a lowered seat as I plan to start autocrossing my STi soon, and I have near zero headroom now without a helment. A potential, but relatively expensive, solution is to go to aftermarket seats as they (including mounts) tend to be lower. Another option is to have your local race shop fab up some lower mounts.

I've looked at race seats...but I don't want to loose my heated ones!!!!!!!!!:(

Will not work on stock seat. The stock brackets are connected to the seat and you can not remove them. So they are one piece not two piece like aftermarkets.

I suggest you get aftermarket seats if you want to be lower.

Re: Re: How do I lower an 04 WRX Seat?
Can anyone else confirm this? I will not have a chance to actually take the seat out for a couple of weeks to see if the bracket can be removed.

When I installed 2002 WRX seats into my OBS I had a missing seat rail. I had to order it from the dealer. The rails are seperate left and right and they bolt onto the seat.

From the photo that part looks like the mounts are a little different, don't really know since its a STI seat I think.

I'm only 6' and I would still like more head room.

If you do go to aftermarket seats I'd be interested in buying your stock driver's...
Ozaukee 03-19-2004 01:34 AM

If you go STi Vizsla, I would like to buy your stock WRX seats!:D I really like the black seats in the new WRX. PM me if this ever occurs, I'm up by Milwaukee, but drive down to Chicago area all the time.

Does anyone have a stock seat rail lying around that they would like to sell cheap. I would like to try and modify it in order to lower the seat height.

Yesterday, I took my seat out and I looked at removing the height adjustments and welding the seat directly I think that it's not worth it for the difference...

The gain would only be like 1/4 to 1/2 an inch...

so back to drwaing board...

I mean it adds weight to the highest point of the vehicle. Which means a higher center of gravity. From a performance standpoint that increases body roll.

Wow...you're alot more performance oriented then I am that's for sure...

and beleive me at my weight I bring the center of gravity back down!

Anyone try V-Racing seats & mounts in a WRX? Is so do they sit any lower than stock?

I just did my first Autocross today and the headroom loss from wearing a helment is even worst than I thought it would be. Desperately need to do something to get a better driving position.
Ozaukee 03-22-2004 02:34 AM

I must be the only person who brings my helmet to the showroom before buying a car :p

I bet that scares the crap out of the salesman who has to ride with you on the test drive.

You need to make sure you put it on before you drive it.

You're not the only person, but we are a rare breed. After doing that test, I had to search for a wrx w/o the sunroof.
I'm 6'4", and I got the car because I love autocrossing.
WRexxer 03-23-2004 11:33 AM

I'll gie this a bump, hopefully someone will figure out something! hehe

How much would you guys be willing to pay for a set of sliders/brackets that re-mount the stock seats to a lower position? How many people would want just driver's seat, and how many would want a pair for both seats?

I have a friend who is a good welder, and I'm sure we could come up with a solid design if we could find a source for just the sliders.

Personally, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a set of Recaro SRDs, so I shouldn't need them, but if there's enough interest, I can put in some effort on the research and use my car for the prototyping.

Lower Seat
I would want just the driver seat. What does Recaro charge for their brackets? That is what he should aim for. Also I would have no problem with doing it on an exchange basis so he takes the cost of the bracket out of the equation and the price then pays for just his labor.

I'd be interested in both sides if the price is right.

Please post pics of your seat rails... I'd love to help brainstorm a design...
Subi114 06-11-2004 02:10 PM

Hey guys contact stealth-WRX he does the fabrication. I don't know how much he charges but I'm sure you can work something out with him. I just talked to him and he said yes he does it.
grippgoat 06-24-2004 03:49 AM

I just got some used 2003 WRX seats. From preliminary inspection, it looks like the seat is, in fact, different (not just the bracket). The mount looks the same, but it just looks like the seat is built to sit way lower.

I'm gonna roll around on the 2003 WRX seats for a while and see how I like them.
