How do you pass the time in the winter?? part 1

How do you pass the time in the winter??
For those of you, that winter actually affects. What do you do to "keep in shape" during the winter? How do you get seat time?
Indoor Karting?
Ice time trials/racing?

I recently got back into autocross a little more seriously than in the past couple of years.....and the rust was a bit obvious at first.
In the summer I can almost depend upon there being a driving event at least every other weekend. In the winter my options are very limited. My club does Ice time trials, but my schedule conflicts with that.
This area is in dire need of an indoor karting facility(or even an outdoor one).

Obviously, many people use the time to rebuild and improve their cars for the next season....but that really doesn't help you keep up to snuff.
What do you do?

I'd love an indoor karting league.
KC 11-07-2006 11:34 AM

The better of the two karting places recently was shut down by the landlord (they had an indoor league... Racing America near Gillette Stadium)). The other place is utter crap that all the 'good' karters refuse to go there. 2 years was a good run.

Exercise mostly... walking, jogging, lifting (indoors).

Solo-x and I are going to turn my newly aquired 93 Si into a track car for next year, with E-Prepared aspiriations for '08.

But exercise and staying fit is a good starting place. Just don't sit in front of the TV for very long... except Sundays.

There's also the NER Rally-x series (beg for a co-drive) and ice racing at Newfound Lake in NH by the BMW club (anyone can play). Last year was a warm year so not many events there, if they had one at all.

Our ice events were non events last winter due to the warmer conditions.....not that I could have attended anyway.

I really wonder what it would take to start up and operate an indoor karting facility. Wonder if it could survive in Vermont(greater Burlington area).

I'm thinking about a car driving game for one of the consoles we own. I doubt it will help at all IRL but they look like fun. Logistics is my biggest problem - I can't install a seat and wheel in the middle of the family room.

winter rallies are more fun due to improved padding in the ditches.

CARS Rallye Perce Neige in northern Quebec in Feb, grandaddy of North American winter rallies. how about a 50-km stage run twice...at night!

Challenge sur Glace, sherbrooke Quebec: door to door ice racing on real studded tires, with 40,000 spectators? No, it's no fun, everyone should stay home....

Maine Winter Rally, December, Rangely area; RIP, not happening this year due to landowner/access issues. Maybe it'll be back next year. Last year, Maine Winter had the slippriest roads I've ever even driven on--much less raced on.

Ontario Winter Rally--all night TSD, starts at 10 pm and finishes 7 am...uses real rally roads from Tall Pines, w/only 3 rest stops and otherwise you are flying thru the winter night. Again, no fun, eveyone should stay home. If you DO come, bring down jackets, sleeping bags, tow straps and shovels

Off season excercise: XC skiing, backcountry powder hunting, and/or lifting new bits onto the rally car from underneath.

Indoor Carting or the better option Winter Auto-X
forget some silly donuts in the snow. That's for kids. Throw some decent snow tires on and set up the course with cones to see who can handle their car the best :D
kfoote 11-07-2006 12:13 PM

Go to races where it's less likely to snow.

My last event of 2006: DE event at Lime Rock 11/17
My first event of 2007, though crewing, not driving: Daytona, 1/26

dunno now that the place KC talked about closed

tough to beat 10-2 Karting for $100

+1

With a little karting and alot of exercising!!
JoBoo 11-07-2006 01:03 PM

Get a copy of GT4 and do all the skills licencing. That'll keep your brain sharp thru the winter.
Scooby921 11-07-2006 01:05 PM

I just continue racing...duh!

Honestly!

I do a bit of alpine ski racing. Not that we have anything bigger than a small bump here in MI, but if feeds the need for athletic activity and competition. Slalom courses on Sunday morning...beer league GS racing on Monday nights. Aside from that I'm always playing soccer to help keep me in shape. I get my racing fix at Kart2Kart here in metro Detroit.

Apparently not happening this year. John and Ted are arranging the Vermont Winter TSD on February 10, however.

I like to use the off season to downhill and xc ski, but with the last event of the year being on 12/3 and the first event of 2007 being on 1/25, I don't worry too much about the off season.

I bought an old GL-10 AWD turbo for rallyXing. And in the winter I play gt4. I built a cockpit and have the 900' wheel.
Here's my cockpit: http://www.mrheavyfoot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=423&highlight=

you probably know, but you're not too far from some kickass karting places up in montreal.. whenever i'm visiting friends in burlington, we try to head up there.

Yep.....just want something a little closer to home.
:selfish:
Those places are a good two hours from me. Makes participating in a league tough.
I'd be perfectly happy if they were at least an hour closer.
The Burlington area would probably have a tough time with affordable rent.
Waterbury area might work, nestled between the resorts, and 25 minutes south of Burlington and 20 minutes north of Barre/Montpelier. Rent would be cheap in comparison....not sure if it would draw the people though.

15 acres of rallyx site on my family's property = there is no off-season

My bags are packed when do we leave?
Mykl 11-07-2006 06:52 PM

I have a lot of studying to do. Now that half of my Saturday's aren't spent preparing for a Sunday event I can take some time to learn how to do suspension alignments and as soon as I get a laptop... dive into ECU tuning.

Fortunately the off-season isn't very long down south. I still have another autocross before I'm done for the year, and cone dodging starts back up in February. If I had the spare money I could probably find a PDE somewhere.
Draken 11-07-2006 07:10 PM

I'm running a NASA TT on Saturday. I also have the opportunity to run a couple track days end of this month and in December. I'm also contemplating the December 30th open practice session at T-hill.

Cali FTW.

Last winter I spent working on tires for ice racing and upgrading the WRX.

This winter I'm fixing crash damage from LSPR and ice racing (if we have ice).

I'm also in a Sunday morning basketball league.

OWR is a no go this year along with all other Ontario brisk TSD's (pending the clarification of the definition of "racing" in proposed federal legislation).

That means everyone is having to find their own twisty, snowy roads. I usually organize an informal winter cruise or two every year. I'll have more time for it this year.
boost junkie 11-07-2006 08:57 PM

Indoor karting at Allsports in Dulles, VA and prepping the car for next season. I do have one more HPDE at VIR in November but after that I probably won't be back on a track until March or April at the earliest. Luckily karting is really fun, but it gets expensive real fast.

Yeah...Park City is such a boring, flat, unpopulated area. Glad I'm planning to come visit a friend. Still debating whether or not I 'want' to bring my skis along  .
