Tire width rule revision in STX yet?

I remember a thread here in MS regarding the SCCA revising the total allowed tire width in STX to perhaps something greater than 225. Does anyone know the status of this yet?

What you are talking about is the STX Class Killer thread. It can be found here.... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=259925&perpage=25&pagenumber=4
Last post was on the 5th. Nothing's changed. It'll be in the next Fastrack (Janurary) if there is one. Is this question going to come up every week? ;)
It'll be posted here once a decision is made. Really. :)

I don't see it going to 245. I actually hope it doesn't. Things are pretty fair on the 225's.

Sorry Big K, i didn't realize it came up every week. ;) I remember seeing tom post about it and have been frequenting this forum fairly regularly to see if anything came about. I thought there might be more info as tom claimed that fastrack might have a decision within a few days of that post. I suppose it might be delayed more until all points events are done across the country (if they already aren't).

Actually there is one fairly compelling reason for it to go to 245s -- the fact that two models of car (at least) that are allowed in the class come with 245s as OE. Yeah, of course, coming from me, you know those two cars would be Mustangs and F-bodies (Camaros/Firebirds). The problem is that the STAC didn't do their homework before allowing the 5.0s in the class, which is why the rim width had to be changed mid-season too (yeah, they also come with 8" wide rims). If they'd paid attention to anything besides their little Hondas, they may have noticed their mistake initially, and then this whole 225/245 argument would never have come up.
:sigh:

I almost hope that it stays at 225. Mainly because there's a lack of good tire choices at 235 and 245. The only Azenis in that width (245/45-17) is too tall for our cars. Tirerack doesn't list a KD in a size that fits. The BFGoodrich site lists a 245/40-17, no price there, but probably well beyond $200. Add some lightweight 17x8" rims, and you're looking at $2500 for a wheel/tire combo.

Ahhh, gotcha!;) Sorry I completely forgot about the pony cars!
Even as an owner of a '98 Z28 I'd never really thought of autoxing it. Suspension is WAY too mushy to start for my taste. Plus, I'm nowhere near a good enough driver to pilot it around the course safely!

We politley DQ those people and le them know that it's not the best way to navigate the course.;) We've had a handful of those (E46 M3, 5.0, WS6) in our region in the last couple years. Usually they don't come back even though we give them an opportunity to redeem themselves. The dangerous situation they cause doesn't enter into their heads. They see smoky burnouts in races on TV and think it's cool.
I know I'd be decent in it, but I'll definitely be replacing the struts & springs on before it hits the track. 73K mi. and I can bounce the rear end like a basketball!

Also the BFG KD is not no their website for some reason, but is available if you call. $245 a pop. Ouchie.
Speed costs $$, how fast do you want to go. I know Im not compromising with the rest of my car, so if the 245 rule goes through, then 17" rota attacks with some 245/40/17 KDs for me.

Well, I'll be class filler for you then! I'll go with the $129 MX's and pray you cone every run! Racing is fun, but I'm not gonna shell out $245 for ONE tire when I can get a whole set of 225/45-17 Azenis for not much more.

My reasoning is the contingency cash. With subaru paying $500 for the Pros, Hancook paying for the Pros AND tours, Honduh paying for the Pros, and the BFG contingency, if I win I can get my $$ back.

Good point! I'll have to wait till 2004 to consider those options though. I can't afford the initial investment after buying a house.

What I mean is: Last year, BFG only paid for STS/STSL. Are they even going to pick up STX/STXL this year?
Also, you have to eventually get the money from the SCCA. Still waiting for the Honda money from the ProFinale. Would like to have it in time for x-mas.

Yes, there's also a 245/45-16 SO3-PP. Both of these are probably not quite as sticky as the Azenis or KD, hard to say if the added width will (more) than make up for the compound. The 245/40-17 MX also requires an 8" wide rim if you want to stay within the specs.
Not that I should worry too much, my main problem is lack of driving skills. :o

Are any of you guys concerend about fitment issues with the larger tire size a possiblity? I know things are pretty difficult on the WRX to begin with, expecially the wagon. I know many of you use coilover setup that clear some room up inside the wheel well, but if your lowing your cars, etc.. won't it be a very tight fit? Or, are you all prepared to roll the fenders if required?

I'm not using coilovers, yet. Rubbing with a 245 will be a definite concern. I know it's unfair to the pony cars, but I still hope the 225 stays. Sorry Karen!

What she said. :D Seems kind of silly to allow 5-liter Mustangs and F Bodies in the class then make them minus-size down to 225s while everybody is plus-sizing from their OE tire size.

That's right.:( Oh well, it was a fun thought while it lasted!
FS in my car would be SCARY! My OEM panhard bent when i hit a pothole that took out a BBS wheel in the process. I replaced it with a tubular panhard and was planning SLP's suspension kit (Bilstein's, Springs, RCA's and sway bars) for $700 next spring.
Looks like ESP would be the destination, but I'll have to check on legality of the Z06 clutch.
