In-Car rally video -- PGT '02 WRX -- Matthew Johnson

Matthew drove his bright Orange '02 WRX in the Rally America series and was extremely successful, running in the PGT class. He was locked in a tough battle all season long and ended up 2nd nationally in PGT by literally seconds. The battle came down to the last event of the season, something almost unheard of in US rally. He's posted a bunch of in-car video on his site, take a look:

There are several events worth of in-car, all of them are very entertaining.

I cant imagine how drivers can pay attention to the co-driver and drive at the same time.. information overload for me.

Thats what I always used to think too watching these kind of videos. But once I started codriving I can say that once you get in the car and are flying down the road it all just kinda flows and comes together. You can see and feel where you are and what is coming next and get into a rhythm.
Thanks for the vids too! Its always fun to watch others in-cars and see how they handle some of the corners. :)

now if only I knew what all that jargon means.. :)

the number that comes before the direction is the gear you have to be in to make the corner, it will also tell the driver what the corner is kinda gonna look like, the big numbers like 200 are distances in meters/yards to something like a turn or a crest, or whatever is comming up. If you ever play colin mcrae for ps2 you'll learn real quick what everything means.

You get pretty used to it pretty quick - you're concentrating on reading the road, listening to the codriver, and the car - thats about it.

And it's actually not the gear the car is supposed to be in although that sometimes get close to correct. The corner grades are spit out by an inertial navigation tool made by Jemba with information added by the team that makes the notes (In the US this is mostly (all?) P-Sport.) Here's a link to a chart that shows corner grades:
http://www.p-sport.com/cornergrades.jpg
To prove that it's not supposed to be the gear think of this sequence (fairly typical at Cherokee) 3L 50 3R into 5L tightens 4. No one would shift from 3rd to 5th then back to 4th for a turn complex like that.

if the RIM video is still up, watch me almost door them as they drive by after we broke down (and i thought the car was on fire, hence my stupid escape attempt  ) Had to apologize to Matt and Wendy for that one,and they did'nt even swear at me in the incar footage, class acts those two :)

Some notes systems might tell the driver what gear to be in or how hard to brake, etc, but not the one we use in Rally America. We use the JEMBA system where a computer/person creates the notes that everyone uses, and there is no recce where you can go and create your own notes. A "left 5" is a gradual left turn, while a "right 2" is very tight, and a "right 1" would be a 180 degree hairpin.
Video games are more realistic than ever, but don't try and apply games to real life!

My wife and I met Matt & Wendy at Maine Forest this summer. Very nice people. Good in-car vids, and fun to watch without commercial interruption or obnoxious commentators. :)

JC I think I can host yours - email me at jluikart at gmail.com (I want to ask you some questions about car prep too)
I was hoping to see myself on the OLN coverage from Ojibwe where we crewed for JC and Matt, but didn't see any.

Great vids.
It looked like he had more than just a flat tire on the last stage after he went into the ditch.
We were at the marshal point before a long straight, and his car was pointed sideways going down the straight. I'm not sure how he managed to keep the car on the road, let alone maintain some speed.
tcc - I was sure we'd make it on camera in the van! Unfortunately, I was working on the garage and forgot to watch Saturday. I'll have to tape it on Friday.

I saw MJ's car on Saturday and it's got all sorts of oddball things broken/bent. I think all four corners are at least 5 degrees off. It is really truly amazing that he was able to still run competitively after that roll.

Really? I thought the car looked pretty damn good for having rolled! It was the slide into the bank bending the rear suspension that really ruined the handling. Besides, all rally cars are a few degrees off after a few seasons! ;)

I ran an entire rally with -1.4" toe on my right front. Talk about scary above 80mph.
