jdm sti lip question part 1

will667 04-18-2005 08:30 AM

jdm sti lip question
i'm having some issues with my replica lip.

i have an sti so i had to remove the side splitters and it has those 3 square holes where the splitters attached. when the installed the lip you can see the top part of those holes. i removed the lip and put a piece of white electrical tape and painted it psm, but it doesnt look good. what does the real jdm use? i heard it was some kind of tape that covers those holes. also is it recommended that i sand down the little nub on the lip on sides of the piece?

thank you

the JDM lip should go up as high as the side splitters did, thus covering up all the holes...the only other lip that doesnt cover the holes would be the greddy lip, which comes with 2 additional side peices to cover the holes....

hmm...well im not sure i can get it to go up that high. any suggestions?

I went over this w/ one guy already about the same problem.
EAuto gets theres from the same as Gruppe-S so they are equally the same w/ the fitment problems.

1: my car is white so putting white Elec tape over those holes your speaking of covers them so you don't see blk behind the lip from the bumper.Silver will be tougher.

main thing is to sand the sides (towards the fender lip) down so you can tuck that lip over the Splitter holes. You def have to grind that Poly to make it flush up over the holes.

That lip is kinda made for a regular WRX bumper because they don't have those splitter Holes.

People have made them fit nice but its a matter of Sanding it down.Taking off the bumper would also help so you can Form the bumper to the lip instead of the lip to the bumper. Its flexable.Break out some sand paper and maybe get some vinyl and touch up paint to paint the vinyl to match your car and your home free.No holes seen.I kinda miss my JDM lip (sold it) and now I have the V-Limited.I wish I still had both but the paint shop messed it up.

Good luck!

Sorry for the newb question, maybe the pictures will help clear things up for me but why do you have to take the side splitters off to put a lip on that was made for the STI in the first place?
Mrfairlady 04-18-2005 02:28 PM

Yes its made for the STi..but A factory piece on the Spec C Limited.
As far as the JDM STi..it is an option so I'm thinking that w/ that option you get a Regular WRX/Spec C limited bumper or it just fits so good...no reason to do all that?

The main thing is...is the "Real" version is a PERFECT fit.It even comes w/ the Grey Seal that runs down by the Fog Covers.Fitment w/ that I'm Positive Hides EVERYTHING!
The replica is well..a replica.Fitment can be "MADE" to fit well...so Sanding and grinding is the best way to insure a good flush fit.
I have pic's and a Diagram on how to really do it (sort of) but my bandwidth on Photobucket has been exceded.

ok, i did it.

all one needs to do is sand down those little nubs on the lip where it meets the fender near the light.

also, i bought 3m molding tape specific to this application along with 3m automotive adhesion promoter. i would recommend these items.

and i bought a aluminum strip at home depot for inside the bottom part of the lip. without that the thing will buckle like crazy.

And the reason for my confusion was...........I was thinking of a different lip. :p

Looks like you got it to fit pretty darn good, got a picture of the whole front end or whole car?

not with the new lip on. im also installing a rear lip today. ill probably take pics of the whole car this weekend.
supermarkus 04-19-2005 02:15 PM

Yeah I was thinking of a different lip while reading this. A buddy of mine ordered it from japanparts.com and it wasn't listed as an STi lip, nor did it come with an STi part number or box. It's the standard JDM OEM lip, the STi part is a splitter that the Spec C type RA and V-limited come with.
kennyvb 04-19-2005 04:43 PM

will667, where did you use the molding tape? it looks great.

i used it slightly above where the marks are indicated on the lip to put it.

from my experience with the lip;
1. This type of lip is for every 04-05 WRXs and STIs. In Japan, it's listed in the factory accessory catalog. So it's not STI-specific item. Every issue of Hyper Rev mag has an advertisment page for these accessories.
2. The original piece has a thin black sponge strip running along the top inside edge of the lip where it meets each bumper side. This sponge strip will fill the gap between the lip and bumper side. No holes to be seen.
3. Even with the real one, you have to be careful when attaching the lip. The lip is needed to be installed with its top edges stick up as high as possible. This will ensure the smallest gap as possible
4. The replica can not match the original in terms of fit. So extra work is needed.

yeah, but not that much extra work.
paperchasin 04-21-2005 10:14 AM

hey will, did u get the lip painted before making the fitment adjustments?? or should i test fit it prior to painting it??
andrewfraser310 04-21-2005 04:17 PM

test fit before or it could be $$$ extra in long run

i did not test fit it before i got it painted. i'm not sure how much it would cost, but to save you any issues i would take it to a shop to get painted and fitted. a good shop that knows what theyre doing.
