Schroth Rallye 3 install part 1

Jman73 02-03-2002 06:01 PM

Schroth Rallye 3 install

My friend just picked up some deist harnesses for his Aud TT so I am going to be the beneficiary of his Schroth Rallye 3 harness. Woohoo! :D Has anyone mounted one of these in a WRX wagon? I noticed that he connected his to the rear seat latch on the drivers side C-pillar where the 60/40 fold down latches when the seats are upright. I was thinking that I could do that as well but not sure how structurally "grounded" that location was in the WRX.
Thanks.

Not a wagon, or a WRX, but I used the rear seat lap belt mounting bolt for my Scroth Rallye3 install. That would be option D in the above posted link.

Cool

Thanks everyone!

Not a scroth...but similar.

I believe that Schroth recommends the rear seat lapbelt anchor point as mentioned above.

this weekend

Cool!
I hope to tackle this little project after we get my buddies deist harnesses installed. I will report back with my experience.

I sure hope not!! That is the worst way to mount it, unless you are looking to compress your spine. I suppose it would be a good way for me to gain roll bar clearance in the Miata... ;) You want that belt as close to horizontal as possible.

They said that as long as it was less than a 45 degree angle it was safe.

Schroth says that the C pillar should be used for the Rallye 3 and the rear lap belt anchor points for the Rallye 4. They're the experts.
They say DO NOT use the lap belt mount for the Rallye 3!!
Jman73 02-07-2002 09:21 AM

agreed

I just spoke to a couple club racers in town who are instructors at some for the events and they said that it needs to be attached to the C pillar.

My Schroth is attached to the C-pillar, retaining the stock rear belt pivot as well (use a longer bolt, if necessary, to compensate).
peepshow 02-08-2002 07:35 AM

Ooops, it was for the Rallye 4. Sorry, I assumed it would be the same for all of their harnesses.

Schroth doesn't seem to indicate why they recommend the C-pillar for the 3 point harness and the rear lap buckles for the 4 point. IT seems to me that the 4-point harness is nearly identical to the 3-point unit in that there are two shoulder belts which end up joining at the rear of the seat and terminate in a buckle. Its only AFTER this buckle that the 3 and 4 point units differ. the 3 obviously has only ONE anchoring strap eminating from the buckle, whereas the 4 point unit has TWO straps eminating from the buckle. Why the radical mounting differences? i could see that perhaps it because that most vehicles will have the capacity to mount only ONE strap to the c-pillar leaving no other equally level mounting point for the 4-point harness's other mounting strap. The 3 point will work fine there, but not the 4 so they have no other alternative other than to recommend using the rear lap belt anchors in order to advertise "universal" compatiblilty despite the c-pillar being the prefered mounting method.

However, in the WRX, we have those 2 metal anchor points which i think are originally intended for the child seat retaining straps. I wonder if those mounting points are acceptable for the 4-point harness? Any thoughts?

My concern would be that those are designed to hold a child seat, and children generally do not weigh as much. Not sure if you are a real lightweight, but me at ~180 lbs... They should be overengineered, but I don't know the specifics of their weight limits, if any.

OK,
I installed the 3-point harness this weekend. Looks and feels bad-ass!

One question though. Take a look at where I bolted it down in the rear. Seems to be fine but I wanted to get everyones thoughts.

Bump.. I was going through some old threads on harnesses.. I'm sorry, but this looks like a very bad idea. Mounting a harness to the strut top bolts? People have broken those things off without even thinking about them. Seems dangerous to me, even if only for autox duty.

bbbradley and Cosworth

I have 2 5-point harness in my WRX sedan and the shoulder belts were initially attached to the child seat mounts. I became very uncomfortable with that situation, not trusting the mounts to be strong enough, and they are now mounted to the rear seat belt anchor points - not ideal, but it will suffice until I buy either a harness bar or a 4-point cage (budget permitting).

Just an FYI, If any WRX autocrossers are interested in a Rallye 4 at a discount, shoot me an email at [email protected] and I could offer you a discount in return for taking some digital photos of the install and doing a short writeup/review of the belts. I've had several guys do this for other cars...

I'll be gone part of the day today, but I can get back to whoever is interested later tonight. I only need 1 person, so first come first serve. I'd prefer autocrossers only because I really only recommend these belts for autocross, unless you have rollover protection in your car.
TimStevens 07-25-2002 10:26 AM

This offer only available for WRX installations? I autocross a Toyota MR2 and have been looking to install a harness in there for awhile now...
