Got some spare time, so creating some new artwork based on the Tommy Kaira 2.2-litre STI we tested last weekend. You can access a larger version at
apexjapan.com art galleries , though this one is only about 450pixels wide. I'll be finishing up a color version eventually.

Have fun!

Sweet...

That's sweet. The line drawing actually looks better than the actual car. Put more drawings up, or email them to me! They are great.

To me that bumper makes it look like an EVO of some sort, ca't remember the series.
h2o 03-14-2002 07:29 PM

Looks great, now I wanna make one 2:D

Well, I'd like to do more illustrations, but it gets down to time. It takes about 3-4 hours to create the base illustration here, and it'll take a couple of days more labour to finish it up properly. I do this for a job, so paying illustrations tend to take precedence over these that I just do for the heck of it.

They are actually created in Freehand, and are fully scaleable vector art. I do the shading and such in Photoshop for the web views, though I'll do that within Freehand for print jobs, which is where most of my work goes to.

Paul, we all hate you because you drive a B4 RSK to work everyday!

Just kidding, great drawing, and great car that you have. I can't wait for the turbo Legacy to come here!

Jakezor, The front spoiler was taken from the Mitsu Lancer Evo 6.
Cofusion 03-15-2002 12:25 PM

Now I really like that kinda has an EVO look to it. Thanks for the pics.
Zahnster 03-15-2002 12:42 PM

Looks more like an Evo 4 to me.

OK I just crawled out from under a rock, ....when did they come out w/ a 2.2l STi?

and on an unrelated note on the website that Shirokuma has a link to
Oh oh I want I want:
Subaru Legacy B4 STi In Australia, the WRX might be the car that every car nut drools over. But in Japan right now, the B4 outsells the WRX by two to one. And while Scooby has unleashed STi versions of both their REX and Forester models here, the B4 has been strangely ignored. Not any more. Subaru's STi had the most understated aero package of any B4 at the show, but it did get many mods that B4 owners had been screaming for over 3 years. Brakes are 4-pot on the front and spring and stabilizer rates have been upped for greater cornering rigidity. The steering rack is down from 16.5 to 15.0, and the steering wheel is carbon fibre while higher quality leather seats and plastics grace the interior. A short throw quick shift 5-speed has been employed and Pirelli P Zero rubber sit on OZ 17 inch rims. STi say we can expect far more from the exterior by next year, most likely combining forms with the Blitzen B4 styled by Porsche Design.

Great drawing :) Look forward to seeing the colored version! How come you don't use Illustrator? What do u like about Freehand? I used Freehand a few times but for some reason the display seemed to be quite ugly.

I think Tommy Kaira had that bumper design for Legacy before the Evo 6 came out.

I was bored so I colored your illustration. Here it beez.

STI didn't, if that's what you are asking. Tommy Kaira has created a 2.2-litre conversion of the STI WRX. Tommy K takes many different brands of cars and then redoes engines and suspensions, other parts to create "Tommy Kaira" branded vehicles. While you could bring your own vehicle and have them work on that, they usually sell vehicles themselves.

Quite a good job!

If you need, I've got the original 1200 wide pixel version. Or can create a new template to any size, really.

I've been using Freehand for the last 13 years or so, and am quite comfortable with it. It's as simple as that. I had no reason to change for quite a while, Illustrator simply didn't support high-rez views of photos to use as templates. It wasn't until around illustrator 7 that that changed, I believe, a feature that had been in Freehand since either version 1 or 2 (yes, I've been using both *that* long). :)

Tommy K has had that signature design for many years before the Evo series adopted it. I believe MMC copied Tommy K, not the other way around.

Thanks, I try, I try. A couple of years of mechanical and architectural illustration helps me out. Doing illustrations like this are more fun than my commercial work - dimensional views of cars, engine cutaways, car cutaways. I can be a bit more "loose" with these illustrations, no engineers are going to measure them for accuracy!

I here you, luckily I work in a engineer free work zone (well aside from software engineers).
shirokuma 03-18-2002 03:01 AM

I've been lazy, or, more accurately, busy, so this is all I've done:

which isn't all that much, but something to look at for now.

shirokuma,

I used to sketch quite a bit, but I never did learn to do it w/ freehand or illustrator. Your work makes me wish I did. Two thumbs up! Thanks
