Just Used My New Ding King! part 1

AzSandSlinger 10-23-2003 05:12 PM

Just Used My New Ding King!
I ordered my DIng King thinking at the most, I would be a$$ed out 20 bucks. Man, I tell you though... THIS THING WORKED!!! Absolutely fabulous. I had a 3" x 1/4" dent on the rounded part in front of my hood. I got it from a semi's mud flap that got kicked up to me. It ripped my hood scoop off, just to give you an idea of the severity. I also used it on a number of hail damage and two door dings. One of which was 3" long. There are still some "remnants" (i.e. crease marks), but are only noticable if you know where they are AND in the right light. I think if you use the right technique, this is an invaluable tool, especially if you own the sheet-metal subaru. Just wanted to tell everyone my story and hope this saves some other people money.

I agree, the ding king is wonderful, and for $20, it's a steal. A caveat, though, it won't cure all. I've found it to work about 2/3 of the time, and small dents, it won't help much. Large dents, though, it looks professionally done.
Jejunum 10-23-2003 05:25 PM

where did u get it for 20? I have two small dents on my roof i wanna get rid of (grr acorns? and a falling garage light cover) and one on a fender flare
zeroTread 10-23-2003 06:35 PM

In the instances that it doesnt work, does it do any unpleasant things to the car like turn the dent inside out or something?
ShotgunTC88 10-23-2003 07:07 PM

Be Carful!!

I got a DingKing too, And yes they do work allot of the time.......

BUT...I pulled a dent on my front fender (rock ding) and the dam clear coat pulled off!!

Granted, I had to pull the dent about three times to get it out and ii DID get the dent out, But now I have this shtty touch up spot about 1inch round where the dent was!

Use caution

Hey Shane,

If you want to get the crease out, you're gonna need to color sand really lightly (about 2000 grit) then follow up with a little super fine compound (Finnese It II or Foam Pad Polish... both from 3M). Make sure to get a little backing for the paper to keep it nice and flat and use a bit of the compound on the paper as a lubricant.

I've got a bunch of Foam Pad Polish made for dark cars if you want to use some (that craps expensive... around 30-40 a bottle... so if you wanna use some you can swing by my place... I'm in the Chandler area). Otherwise, I know Space Age Paints in Mesa has a bunch of polishes and the good Meguiar's Nikken Sandpaper you want to get.

is this the one that uses hot glue? or is it a suction thing?

Sweet! I'll look into that. So far it has been an on-going project. An hour here, hour there.. I still have a little more I'd like to try. I swing by Chandler quite a bit (to/from ASU East and work) so stopping by would not be a problem! I'm always looking for new opinions/techniques on using the Ding King. As for those of you out there that want a Ding King. I got mine off eBay from "smartbids"

It costs 19.95 + 5.50 shipping.. you get 6 tubes of glue with it though.. All the work I've done (approx. 15-20 pulls) I've only used up 1 tube. The only drawback is that it takes a week to get here (comes from WV).. He ships out same day in most cases (next day at the latest). I hope this can save other people as much money as it saved me (i figure 200-300 bucks).

AzSandSlinger 10-24-2003 06:24 PM

Sorry, I have no before/after pics... If anyone is in doubt or just curious, you are more than welcome to take mine for a "test run." Provided you are within my vicinity (Tempe-Southern/Mill) and can work around my hectic schedule.

how the friggen hell did that happen?!?!?! (yes, it was necessary for the word hell to be bolded for the effect :p) did u let the glue dry for like 10 mins or somethin?

no seriously though, did you make a mistake somewhere in the instructions like letting the glue dry too much? i really don't wanna make the same mistake that you made (no offense, just saying..) don't feel embarassed it's just the internet  @*$! happens man

yes and yes, from what i've read --- you hot glue a suction cup thing on to the ding, wait a few minutes, then you put the bridge thing over it (w/ 2 more suction cups on each end) and then screw on the knob on until you hear the pop :)
gerbs 10-31-2003 04:23 PM

oh BTW, since everyone seems to care about before/after pics, here's the ding i found this morning on my rex:

u can hardly see it because my car is so incredibly shiny!

my dad also has about the same size but a little bigger ding on his blazer, i'll post it later (he ain't home :p)

once i use el dingo kingo i'll get another pic. WISH ME LUCK! :)

Oh and of course... Two more just to show off my zaino

yeah what he said. I do paintless dent removal so I am against using this product. But please don't flame me, it is just my opinion that, I can do a better job and get the factory finish. There is no problem with people using this product as long as they know that your dents will never be 100%. And if money is tight then this product will work as well as you want it to. Anyways if you dents come out well then good job.

P.S. gerbs---just a little help, to get the right anlge for the dent you are taking a pic of you need to be a little bit more parallel with the car and not so muck straight on with it. The dent will show up better especially if you have some sort of a background
Mulder 10-31-2003 07:16 PM

I have always used a PDR professional for minor dent/ding removal and always will. I don't believe that any "as seen on TV" product can replace a trained professional. Yes, some will get satisfactory results as posted here and will be very happy, but IMO the potential for damaging the panel further is too high. You can easily go from a readily repairable ding or dent to a $$$$ body-shop job.
I do a lot of my own work and have for years, but I know the limits of my abilities and knowledge. My car will never go to a shop or dealer for mechanical service, but I'm on a first-name basis with my local Dent Doctor :)
recce02 10-31-2003 08:05 PM

right on, nice to hear people using the right resources
AzSandSlinger 11-01-2003 02:26 AM

sweet!
Nice job Gerbs!!
that is an awesome job!!

I did alot (HOURS upon HOURS searching through the threads) of research on the ding king. I must say it came down to the simple economics of the job. 20 bucks.... how could I say no? I've wasted more than that trying to find decent rim cleaner..lol.. I must say that I had alot of doubt, but after all was said and done, I was pleased with the outcome. I also agree with recce2, to get a professional outcome, hire a professional. I have seen some extremely good work done by dentless repair guys (and gals, too..lol..). So, as I said before, it comes down to the economics. If only I had a best friend that happenned to do dentless repair..lol..

id like to know this too cauze i have two small dings on my roof and one small one from a shopping cart (like acorn size dings)

my ding isn't even half the size of an acorn
eastcoastbumps 11-02-2003 01:37 AM

I'm thinking about purchasing one of these. I just got a quote of over $300 to get a deep scratch taken out and 3 dents. I know they'll come out perfect if I bring it to a pro, but for $20...its tempting.

gerbs 11-02-2003 02:35 AM

well, i'm going to try it on my dad's blazer since i already bought it and everything but.....

i decided that i'm not going to take the ding king to my WRX. luckily, i found a place about 45 min away from me in wisconsin called 'zing a ding' that seems very reliable and efficient. they 'massage' the ding back into place and guarantee their services. been around since 1994, so it seems trusty. I'll call them up sometime this week.

Link for zing-a-ding: http://www.zingading.com/
gerbs 11-02-2003 02:52 AM

wow, i guess there's alot of places like this around, it's called "PDR" -- paintless dent repair.... i never really looked into the matter since all my cars before this i didn't care about visual apperance.

good thing my ding is very small, they should charge me the cheapest rate they can since i guess it's "the bigger the dent the more $ to repair"

har har har i thought the only way to repair a dent was either w/ the good ol' unreliable ding king or getting your door like entirely re-done

<- very happy to have found out about this pdr stuff :)
AzSandSlinger 11-02-2003 03:15 AM

concerning "wee little dings"..lol
I used (as staed prior) the ding king to remove SOME (the really noticable ones) hail damge. the smallest "ding" i took out was a ding about 2cm in diameter. To do this you apply a VERY small amount of glue on the center of the small ding remover. Center and place it on the ding, allow to dry, and pop it up after 5 minutes. *NOTE* I found that the ding king is much more effective if you move the adjustable pads on the ding king as far inward as poosible.

I haven't even had my 04 WRX wagon a week, and today I notice a ding in one of the doors (rear driver's side). It's high up above the crease line in the door and is vertical in nature... so I suspect some oblivious know-nothing soccer mom in an SUV (or one of her little brats). Oh well, the Dent Doctor has gotten my business before with excellent results, and so they shall again!!
