Kumho V710 now available in 245/45/17
Just FYI - Didn't know if anyone would care, but I do, cuz I'm an in SM. Sorry if repost...I searched.

These are on backorder at tirerack, so goodluck. I still have some good meat on my Victo's, but this will have to be my next tire.
Dussander 02-01-2005 01:41 PM

That seems too tall for a WRX.
dwx 02-01-2005 01:45 PM

Terrible size. 245/40/17 is what you want.
Draken 02-01-2005 01:45 PM

not bad for an STi that doesn't want to cut fenders or have too high a ride height to clear the fender lips. The slightly taller 2nd gear would be handy too.

dwx 02-01-2005 01:47 PM

Yeah for an STI it's ok so you can get near 60 in 2nd, but for a WRX (which his profile says he has) it's terrible. Unless he has a six speed or some other gear ratios on it.
thrdeye 02-01-2005 01:52 PM

I'll admit that it is not ideal, but the V710 is a good tire, and this is not a HUGE change from my current size. I may go with the V700 (non-Victo) still, though to get that 40 aspect ratio.

225/45/17 (current size)
Sidewall - 4.0 in
Radius - 12.5 in
Diameter - 25.0 in

245/45/17 (new size)
Sidewall - 4.3 in.
Radius - 12.8 in.
Diameter - 25.7 in.
makofoto 02-01-2005 01:59 PM

That's a substantial difference in diameter, in the wrong direction ... just go with a 225/45/17 Hoosier S04 until they come out ... if ever ... with a 245/40 or better yet a 235/40 ... better gearing ... more into your boost coming out of slow corners ...
thrdeye 02-01-2005 02:07 PM

heh. didn't realize gearing was such a big deal, I realized it helped to have a low profile but not as much as you are stressing.......

I would get a Victo over the V700, unless the V700 is shaved to nothing.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHAHA

:)

Tire I would recommend would be the 255/40/17 Kumho Victoracer. Same height as stock and the 225/45/17. Just a *bit* taller then the 245/40 (which ain't available), but not much.

Perfect local tire, will wear forever, and will fit just fine on a 7.5" or wider wheel.

Tom, that looks like a good option. Any idea on rolling fender requirement?
makofoto 02-01-2005 03:01 PM

just get stiffer springs. ;)

I would imagine not, unless you are running some wussy soft suspension.

255/40-17 Victos fit on an STi just peachy. I still say, for an STi, a 245/45-17 V710 will be faster than a 255/40-17 victo. And again...FOR AN STI..the added gearing could be helpful.

The 245's diameter is 25.4"

I might get some then for the RS.

I hate it when the AutoX gurus don't agree... :(
(Only because it confuses me, LOL)
Tom- is the difference in height worth the difference in stickiness? (I guess I'm assuming that the 710 is much stickier than the Victo V700??)

Or should I just skip the Kumhos and go to Hoosier?!

If i was purely autocrossing at local and a few regional events, I would throw the 245/45-17 V710 on in a heartbeat. They are vastly more grippy than the Victo, and yes...will wear quicker. Several top national drivers also showed that the V710 was faster than the Hoosier on heavy vehicles (Camaro, Corvette etc.) so i think you could expect similar results with the V710 on the STi. The slightly taller diameter of the 245/45 would be an advantage on many of the courses I run. When i ran at PIR a couple times (i used to live in Oregon) I was on the rev limiter in 2nd gear both courses...so a couple mph more would be usefull.

If i was running autocross plus the occasional track day, i would run the 255/40-17 Victo 700. excellent wear, but not as grippy. Which...is probably what I'm going to be doing :)

And yes, I agree the 245/45-17 is too tall for a WRX on a typical autocross course.

Tom: I challenge you do a duel. Your Jetta vs my OBS. Winner gets GTF's mom.

Would a 245/40-17 fit on a 17x7 wheel? Seems a bit wide, but I thought someone may have experience...

Russ,

You'd be sorely disappointed with the performance of the Hoosier at PIR. Especially as compared to the V710. The Hoosier wears quickly, heat cycles out quickly, and needs heat to be effective. The Kumhos are better suited to our local events.

If you have a choice, get the Kumhos!

wrrrx 02-02-2005 09:30 PM

Ooookay... thanks Andy. Chris seems to agree as well- at least when ya throw the whole track-day factor in there.
I guess the V710 not coming in the proper size makes it easy... for now.

draken you said that the 255 victos fit just peachy on the sti? when you say peachy is that no modifications required? i.e. fender rolling or stiffer springs

Yup, that is correct.

wrrrx 02-04-2005 09:27 AM

Sweet!
Tom- and Chris- you both recommend the 255's Victos... are there any real drawbacks to putting these on a 7.5" wheel?
i.e. will I get more tire "squirm" due to sidewall flex, as compared to say the std 225/45/17's?
Man, this may be juuust the ticket I need! :)

thanks,

*subscribed* good thread here from the AutoX gods.

I'm looking at r-compounds on a 8.0inch wheel.
V710 might be the ticket BUT since I'll be doing a HPDE event later this year..the vicors might be better.

However after reading this...the wider is better thing might not apply. (255 vs. 245)
Draken 02-04-2005 10:19 AM

I think the 245/45-17 V710 is a great solution for autocross only minded folks, running local and regional events. It will work great on a 7.5-8.5 wheel, easily fit in the fenders without modification, even on lowered cars. It warms up quick (good for shorter asphalt events) and seems to last longer than hoosiers from a heat cycle standpoint.

The 255/40-17 is a great solution for local/regional autocross, and for track days. It will work fine on a 7.5-8.5 wheels, the offset needs to be fairly spot on in the back of an '04 STi. I've seen them on lowered cars, with just a little fender lip rolling. The victos is long wearing, and very consitant across a wide range of ambient temps. It does not offer the grip of the V710, and is heavier.

For national level events, if you want to be competitive in AS/ESP/SM, you'll be giving up some time with either solution. But, if you aren't prepared to get special wheels, possibly modify fenders etc., then stick with these sizes. I personally ran 275/40-17 Hoosiers at nationals, and questioned the trade off of the extra width versus the fact i had to increase ride height to keep from rubbing the fenderlips. Also, i think the 245 would have come up to temp quicker, as nationals was not particularly hot this year, and inf act, my ladey co-driver ran in damp conditions on her second day.

just my opinion.

I'll be going with 255/40-17 victos, cause i plan on running a few track days, and will not be running national level autocross this year.

I have talked with someone who prepares and drives grand am cup (currentlt building an EVO), and does tire testing for Yokohama. He says that with the R compound tires available, you have to be careful not to go with too wide a tire in comparison to the wheel. For example, he says the absolute widest tire he would go with on an 8" wheel is 255, and 245 would probably be more appropriate. He says the carcas simply cna't stand up to the narrow rim, and the sidewall can't work the way its supposed to.

BTW, he tested some new Yoko R compounds that he thinks will be faster for autox than both the 710 and the hoosiers...

[emailprotected] said they in the water per Kumho and would be 4-6 weeks.
