Ski rack for Impreza?
Hello,
Does anyone have a ski rack for their 2.5 RS? I thought about getting one through my dealership when I pick up my car this week, but I am trying to find out what people have paid for theirs and where they bought it?. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Juan

Yeah, I had the Q towers/clips along with two steelhead bike attachments, and a ski rack, but I sold it when I sold my '98. (grumble grumble) I wasn't planning on buying another Subie for a long time... Oh well. The guy who bought my rack sold it to another mutual friend, who has a Civic, so I'm bugging him to give me the Q clips. Then I'll take my rack of my Civic (big powderhound) and buy some new steelheads and a set of towers, and I'll be all set.

How'd you know that I have a ski rack on my car? I just put it on for winter last month, most of the time I run around with just the bike mounts on. I'm just curious how you knew.
Anyhow, if you're only going to be carrying skis, Thule makes a ski/snowboard only rack. I don't know how much it runs (maybe about $200-$250), but I do know that it's cheaper than going with the feet/bars/clips/ski mount/Short Roof adapter (you need this for either coupe or sedan)($400-$450). I looked on the site so I could show you what I was talking about, but I couldn't find it there, but it does exsist.
The factory ski racks are made by Yakima (I believe), and I'm sure that they're hella expensive.

i snowboard alot and just got a Thule. it cost me an arm and a leg. because the Impreza is not a very popular so they say, no one around here carried a rack for my car. all together the whole thing cost me about $500. i had to order it from the Thule warehouse. i thought maybe i was gettin ripped off, but that was the quote i got from everywhere else. but all in all it was money well spent i guess. mine came with everything u need, and it also came with a Thule air dam for the top of the car.

Hey Juan,
For the sake of another option...I'm running a Saris roof setup http://www.saris-products.com
I use it for carrying skis, kayaks, and bikes. It's an awesome system and in the end, is cheaper than the Yak. or Thule.
Saris is not sold as an a'la carte like the other setups and everything is included (like the feet, locks, etc.) when you purchase the cross-bars. (except the clips, #6 for our cars and about $18)
I recommend checking them out for the cross-bars. However...their ski attachments are the worst (the rest of their line is great) I think they farmed out the design and manufacture to some Italian company. Bad idea.
What I did was buy the Big Powderhound from Yakima, and mounted it using the Mighty-Mounts from the Nissan X-terra. (shimmed out with rubber inserts). Works like a charm and I get the best of both worlds.
Good luck. Oh yeah...for good rack prices check out
http://www.aardvarkcycles.com
You'd be looking at about $180 for bars, $100 for the ski attachment, and $20 for clips. $300.00 total not bad.

Imprez Me- You got ripped off. The only part of the rack that is Impreza specific is the clips. These prices are straight from the Thule website (www.thuleracks.com):
Aero Feet: $115
Load Bars: $42
Fit Kit (clips): $45
6 pair ski rack: $99
6 pack lock cores: $50
Fairing: $60
Total: $411+ tax (I don't think there was $90 worth of tax [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img])
jImp- You're talking about my bike rack [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img]. I'll get a picture of my car with the ski rack on.

Imprez R - He might have had shipping in there...
On my '98 Impreza sedan I didn't need the roof extension thing. It worked fine and the Yak catalog didn't specify one for it. I'm fairly sure that the roof contour hasn't changed that much...

If you only carry skis than it would run $350.00. If you run skis only, you dont have to have the stretch kit. If you want to carry bikes you need the stretch kit and that adds about 100.00 more. Worked in the bike industry for 10 years.
You can pick most of the stuff up on the cheap on the internet if you know what you need. Yakima is better than Thule. Q46 for clips and 48" bars with 6 locks and big powderhound.
Get this from anyone except the dealer. They are CLUELESS when it comes to this stuff.

Go with the Yakima! Start with the basics then upgrade with a fairing, stretch kit, ski/board button downs, kayak rack and bike rails as you need them. Also get lots of lock cores and keep everything from getting ripped off.
I've had my rack system for over 4 years now and it is still like new!

horatio102- on the L model you don't need the roof extension. You do on the RS or else the sunroof will hit the knobs under the bars that hold the mounts on. Thule didn't know this until I told them (I work at a bike shop, and we carry Thule).

I added a drawtite hitch to my coupe, which is barely noticable and even fits above the subaru performance larger muffler. It was like $120-$150, i don't remember. I welded up an upright bike/ski rack out of 1 1/4 steel tubing that goes in the reciever like you see on some SUVs. It works great, and doesn't rub the paint off like the top mounted racks do. The best part is that i can take it off just by pulling out the pin, and i'm not stuck with a rack on all the time. Plus now i can tow light weight trailers too. Has anyone else taken this approach?

I do when it's the summer, but I still have the rack on so I can carry my bikes.

Hey everyone thanks for the info. Can you recommend any websites to order this stuff from. Or any good retailers to buy from. I am in Southern California and I will go to any store from San Diego to as far north as San Francisco(I like to travel a lot :-) Also what are the only parts I need to carry only ski's and snowboards. Later on I would like to upgrade to bikes and kayaks, but I don't need them right now. You guys recommended everything from Yakima, Thule and Saris, I am now so confused. Also what parts do I need to get for just ski's and snowboards(Clips, bars, feet, short roof adapter, Q towers, stretch kit, etc???)
Thanks.
Juan
P.S. I didn't think it was going to be this difficult to find a ski rack.
Thanks.

Just put my new Yakima rack on this weekend. About an hour to install. I got the powderhound for my snowboard and plan to attach a bike rack this summer. anyway it cost me around $360 for everything including the sks locks (pack of 6 for $50)
Q46 clips - $45
Q Towers - $115
Powderhound - $89
Crossbars 48" - $40
SKS Locks (6) - $50
Easier trips to Tahoe - Priceless
You don't need the Q extensions if you have a sedan. Not sure if you need one for a bike rack but for the powderhound you don't need one.

Hey Juan,
I know for a coupe you will need all the parts that I bought above plus the Q tower extenders (just mean more $$)at least that is what is suggested by Yakima.
Q towers are very difficult to find right now in the Bay Area. I went to REI in Berekely but I think they were all out, SportRack in San Rafael was out, so I ended up buying my Q Towers, Powderhound, crossbar, and locks at Any Mountain in Larkspur/CorteMadera. Then I had to buy Q clips (Q46 is the number for the imprezas) at Marin outdoors cuz they were out of them at Any Mountain. I think REI in Berekly got a shipment recently though, you might want to check there first.
Good Luck in your search, once again here's the list and you're all set
(for coupe)
Q46 Clips (two boxes)
Q Towers
2 48" Crossbars
Q Bar extenders
SKS core locks (optional of course)
Hope it helps!

I think I will be going for the Yakima rack that most of you suggested. I hear good things about Yakima, so I am kind of set on them now. I never thought it would cost $450+ for a ski rack though.

I choose the Yakima over the Thule for only one reason. The Q-clips used on the Yakima racks are a bit thinner than the Thule racks. As a result, they are a bit more forgiving for fitting between the window glass and the mount point.
Not that I noticed a problem with the Thule clips, just that since the price and quality were the same, why not go for that little extra piece of mind.

I have a thule rack setup on my car. Worked out great. Thule just came out with a 6ski/4 snowboard carrier and it's a must. Hey Jose, do you have a 4 door? Because the 2 doors need the short roof adapter, which is another c-note, so $500 is about right. Good thing I had gift certificates and it cost me practically nothing! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img] In any case, when you load your board, careful opening the trunk door on a coupe because you might bang the board!! In responce to the sunroof question above:
I used to have my yaks on a Honda CRX with a sunroof. WOW is that loud! especially with bikes up there.
An air dam on the racks make a world of difference, when the rack is unloaded, it is actally quieter than no rack at all

I don't see how the fairing will fit on my Thule rack with the 6ski/4snowboard carrier on as well. Will it? It's more or less designed with small footprint carriers in mind (ie. bike carriers).

Alright, I work at a ski shop and sell Thule stuff. On my L, I have a 6 pair ski carrier and a Velo Vise bike rack with a wind fairing. Everything fits so dont worry about it. If I wanted to, I could get another bike rack on the top also.
Basically, its personal preference; Yakaima or Thule. Since I got a discount on it, I got Thule. Thule stuff is tough; you pay through the ass because it will last a long time. I tried to drive into my parents garage with my bike on the roof and I RIPPED the rack off the top of the car. The bike was fine, and so was the rack. Now the car was a different story.....oops [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]
In truth though, I did it by accident and I dont recomend that you try it. The Thule/Yakima are all attached to the same thing it just comes down to price. I do know that Yakima makes parts for Subaru so you might be able to go through the dealer if you like.
Good luck, and roof racks kick ass. I recomend a wind fairing so you can put stickers on it...it also cuts wind noise a lot. Later,
Kevin

Can someone take a close-up picture of the clips and how they fit? Do these racks interfere with the windows?
| MattC | 01-20-2001 05:16 PM |
Here's a thought. I bought the Thule rack and didn't like how it fit. So I returned. No matter how I adjusted it I could still move it around. I also didn't like out the clips went on the framless windows. They were leaving marks on the black strip they conect to.
Still set on driving my car up to the mountains I just removed the back seat cushion, along with the back plates. I leave the back plates and all of the bolts out for the winter. This allows me to rip out my back seat in no time. If you have a third person that wants to go, just grab a couch cushion from inside your house. Sure beats that $500 ski rack, and wondering if the rack and everything on it is going to fly off at any minute.

Matt is right, if I had to do it over again I wouldn't buy the rack. I would just take out the rear seats. Of course the ONLY thing I will use this rack for is snowboards, so really don't need it.
Also kevinsUBARU is right, the flairing was made for stickers!
Oh yea, last year I had the problem with mine moving around too. But this year I really cranked them down hard, and so far they've only moved just a tiny bit. Even had them up to 90mph with two snowboards, that equals ALOT of wind against the rack!
Here are a couple of pics:

Yeah, the Thule and Yakima clips are virturally identical but skightly different due to Patents probably. Now as for removing the seat...That might be a option but if you ever take 4 other people and put all of the stuff in the car, you might as well put them on the roof [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]
Down to business.....my windfairing is very sensitive to the stickers I put on it....I have a few right (ok, about 10 or so) and they cant be tacky or anything.
Ethan, your fairing is nice!! I really like the WRC sticker..where did you get it!?

Can you even fit 4 snowboards on Ethan's rack? I know you can stack them, but is there enough clearance? I could put four snoboards in the back, through the center. Then have the people with me sit on on the sides. Its just a tight squeeze. I just couldn't justify $500 so I can maybe carry one more person. But like Ethan said, if you use the rack for other things I can see why you would buy it. The only major downside of removing the back seat is that my damn catless 3" N-1 exhaust is loud as **** w/o the seat there.
