Led Lighting part 1

UKscooby 06-03-2003 11:06 AM

Led Lighting
It seems like there is an interest in LED lighting for both internal and external applications.
The LED's i used cannot be bought from a website or at an auto store, they are an industry only device. They are extremely bright and they get very hot if you do not thermally and electrically manage them. They are also expensive.
Being in the LED OEM auto lighting business, i can get these LED's and i can design the required electronics to use them.
I could possibly supply kits for differing applications, but like a i said, be warned, single LED prices to me are over $7!!

If anyone is still interested, let me know. The more people, the cheaper the kits can become. I will have to spend sometime doing a bit of development work, so if you request something today, you wont see if for 6 weeks or so. I just want you to know up front about possible lead times.
We should start a list with colors, and where you want to use them, ie interior, dash, exterior etc etc.

Colors available are:-

Ultra Violet, royal blue, blue, cyan, green, amber/orange, yellow, red, infra red and white.

As for pics, i know you probably all want some. I dont own a digital camera. For an idea of how bright the exterior lights might be, id say about 1/3 to 1/2 the brightness of emergancy lights on cop cars etc. But, that all depends on the number of LED's per cluster, and obviously the more LED's the brighter, but the more expensive.
I have 6 LED's in each fog light on the front of my wifes Olds Aurora and they are about 50% brighter than the standard halogen bulbs.

Interior are at least as bright as standard bulbs.

Let me know your thoughts.

I will be very interested if you can get LED whites for the HVAC controls. I have bought them off two sites already, and they were either too big or just blew ...

For the big ones, I trimmed them slightly so as to replace the two bulbs at the HVAC. However, as they are still very big and long, they end up very close to the hvac controls itself, and thus not able to spread the white light very evenly.

I will be very interested if you have a solution for this ...

I'd like some interior lights in a semi stock looking fashion...something that I can read with on occasion - with a switch...any ideas?

for a easy to install kit I guess I'd pay up to 40...(sounds reasonable right?)

color...white?

I'm very interested in an application for the instrument cluster gauges in red. I have bulb condoms right now, and it's too dim for my taste.. i need something with oomph.

If you could do something that will go into the stock bulb mount, plug an dplay, i'd pay $$$ for this, provided there are no hot spots and whatnot.

LED's to replace all interior lighting? I'd definatly be in for the royal blue... good stuff

I cant find a place to get bulb condoms, anyone know where?
ive heard much talk of em, and i'd really like to know where to get some, but cant find a site or anything, blah...

If these replacement leds to doem, i'll get those, but i need backup options ;)

Anybody else interested, the more of you, the cheaper they will be.

Give me that cool royal blue! Vee-dub style! With yellow needles!

Yellow gauges would be cool too though...

I've always wanted blacklight gauges, where the legend of the gauges glows in a multicolor scheme when illuminated by UV light. I've never seen an application for them though.

UKScooby,

Thanks for volunteering to supply these LEDs.

I have no intention of getting these myself or "removing you from the loop", but I am a LED "nerd" and would like to know who manufactures these LEDs. The brightest LEDs I know of are by Lumileds.

Would you mind sharing the manufacturer?

If not on this board, let me know; I can email you.

Thanks

JP

led lighting
UKScooby, I am interested in this concept, for interior floor lighting under rear seat and under dash for front floor lighting, as you know this is where the cars are lacking light. put me down for white, and a reasonable amount for cost.

thanks

ok i'm interested in the blue LED for my HVAC controlers and for my instrument cluster gauges. REd LED for my cruise, fog light and window controlers. i also intrested in the interior floor lighting under rear seat and under dash for front floor, for the floor i want blue LED. how bright is 3 LED?. ohh! do you have ultra blue if you do i want it instand of blue:D . thix
UKscooby 06-07-2003 11:19 AM

jakepeters, you have email.

Ok guys, ive noted everyone requests. Keep em coming.

I still want to make you guys aware that there is a lead time involved with this, a bit of development work for the applications i havent done before. But good news, the power supply has been designed and is working great.

I do not have a digital camera to post pics. I hope to remedy this soon.

Thanks for the responce. I know you guys will love these lights!

don't forget about me:D email me :D
UKscooby 06-07-2003 03:28 PM

For those of you who would like front and rear footwell lighting, would you prefer a strip light or a small cluster such as the overhead dome light?

Omega, nothing to email you yet. I have your request down on my list. When you said ultra blue, did you mean ultra violet, or royal blue?
G-force 06-07-2003 03:46 PM

how about some LEDs to brighten the interior ala BMW style with the LEDs located near the map lights glowing down onto to the dash/shifter area? I would buy those.

Also interested in the driver/passenger footwells lights and maybe something for the domelight area as well. And of course, the dash/gauge lights. ALL IN BLUE! :)

Thanks!
omega 06-07-2003 04:36 PM

UKscooby how does the ultra violet look like is it very bright blue? . about the front and rear footwell lighting i want it to be like overhead dome light. can i add one more thing to my list LED for the dome light. thix

:D
omega 06-10-2003 11:09 AM

so what sup with the LED?
sirwrx273 06-12-2003 11:37 PM

led lighting
UK scooby... I personaly would prefer a strip of lights for the footwells as opposed to a spot. I have used both varieties in house lighting and strip create a nice even flow of light

Steve
omega 06-13-2003 12:28 AM

changed my mine on the footwells light i want the same thing as
sirwrx273, a strip light sound really nice.
:D
silvertoy 06-13-2003 09:02 AM

Both a strip light for the footwells (if reasonably priced) and a brighter option for the gauge lighting (red in my case) than the swapped bulb condom method would be excellent.

UKscooby 06-13-2003 12:57 PM

Ok folks,

lights are designed, negotiating pricing for prototype designs to be built.

Things are progressing good.

Shouldnt be too long before i can get firm prices and delivery times.
Jejunum 06-13-2003 01:13 PM

what was decided on for the prototypes? interior/exterior, purpose etc?
UKscooby 06-13-2003 05:16 PM

Ok, prototypes designed:
footwell lights, dome and strip.
dash board lights,
instrument cluster lights,
instant on instant off LED side markers made into turn signals white and amber versions.

Working on:
rear tail lights and brake lights.
fog lamps with LED ring lighting the edges, (like BMW's), with full illumination aswell.
other interior lighting, such as over head dome, accent lighting.

mmm that would be sweet if it was an easy install...

theres a guide to making "angel eyes" on the web too

Led lighting
:D saweeeettt
sirwrx273 06-13-2003 10:30 PM

if people get really daring, you could get a cluster and encapsulate it, bore a small hole in the bottom of the doors and have a ground light that comes on w/ the overhead light when the doors are open. This would work if it was sealed very well from the water coming up from the underside while driving.

you could put a cluster inside that dark well known as the console

a strip in the glove compartment....

I think I'll stop now...

getting into rice territory here

So am I reading right in that you are putting together LED plug and play kit for the:

- instrument cluster
- HVAC control panel

Specifically, I would like to change these to white LED's.
nyxjf 07-12-2003 06:56 AM

what happened to this?
