Plastic Windows part 1

chaddeus 05-30-2006 02:27 PM

Plastic Windows
Since I had 4 break in, involving idiots breaking my glass, I am thinking of going to plastic window so that thief will be having a harder time breaking in. I know that glass is more abrasive than glass thus scratch problems but I am willing to give it a try.

There are a lot of application for plastic windows such as racing where it is used to save weight.

Where can I locate these manufacturers and roughly how much should it cost per glass?

In race applications, the plastic windows are fixed in the up position. You would not be able to lower your windows...not very practical at all. Your back glass will not be able to be duplicated at a reasonable price bcause of the compound curves. Most plastic material hazes and yellows fairly quickly when constantly exposed to uv. I own a glass shop and I've built several race cars with plastic windows. These are my experiences for what its worth. Maybe spend the money on a kick ass alarm system instead?

Well, no matter how kick ass the alarm system is, before the alarm can even sound, the glass must be broken first and thats what I hate!

How about using some good plastic. I am sure there are plastic that will not yellow due to UV or scratch since there are scratch resistent glass. Think about those polycarbonate glass that we use in our RX glasses. I know they are expensive but I am sure its better than paying 4 door glasses costing $200 each

and once u get plastic windows the ass clowns will prob try and melt your windows with a lighter
Mulder 05-30-2006 02:51 PM

Plastic isn't legal for windows on a street vehicle, you may not pass inspection. Also since it's not safety glass it can cause serious injuries in a crash if you hit the window.

I guess there is no way to prevent theft but if we can slow down their process or make them give up, then it should be ok

Also, in the Subaru WRC, I think their windows are plastic and it can rollup or rolldown

You don't have the budget of a WRC team. Don't even compare.

If you have had 4 break-in's, there must be a reason.

Something on your car is a magnet (Pioneer AVIC comes to mind based on your past posts), or you just live in a bad area. In which you should consider securing your car in a better location, or just plain moving.

Perhaps since you live on a college campus, look into an off-campus apartment. Or locking up your car and getting a beater car, or bicycle.

Nothing will stop a determined thief. Back in my young and dumb days, If I couldn't get in easy, I broke things to get in. If that meant a window, a door frame, or lock; so be it. You just need to garage your car, plain and simple.
Buckeye Kid 05-30-2006 04:05 PM

4 break ins? Move out of the ghetto!

Buckeye_Kid doesn't understand why people park cars they care about on the street and not in a garage*

*If you own a 25k car and no garage, you have your priorities mixed up!
VpointVick 05-30-2006 04:35 PM

Lexan has no place on a street driven car.

It yellows with time, and scratches if you look at it crosseyed, not to mention the fact that it isn't very stiff and vibrates like mad.

Move out of the hood, and leave the plastic windows to the racers.
gregsachs 05-30-2006 05:02 PM

Just for reference, when the crack-heds stole my 10 year old clarion radio from my accord, they broke in as follows: tried to pop lock with screwdriver. Tried to pry lock surround from door. Tried to pry window from frame. Finally, broke window. total time: <1 minute. The 'bigger hammer' answer will always be used by someone trying to break ing.
chaddeus 05-30-2006 05:03 PM

Well, I live in Bloomington, Indiana and I don't consider this place as a Ghetto area. In fact, its a nice small town where I school at Indiana University.

Also replying to Buckeye Kid's comment, a Honda Accord is also around 25k. A lot of cars are around 25-30k and most of them do not have a garage :).\

Regarding the WRC, yes, I indeed do not have the budget of the WRC team and do not intend to modify my car to be a WRC prep. What I am trying to say to 'equipment junkie' that plastic window with an electric roll-up and rolldown plastic window is possible.

I guess you guys made a point about garaging my car but there are times that is not practical at the moment. To have a garage apartment, I got to pay about $900 per month compared to paying $350 where i stay now so I would definately stick to where I live until December. Also regarding getting another junk car, I considered it before but still not worth paying for it.

So anybody know anyone in the whole entire america that does high tech plastic windows for autos or could possibly do it?

try using a car cover and secure it with the cable lock
subieworx 05-30-2006 08:09 PM

There is security tint that you can get that protects your windows from breaking.
InfamousDX 05-30-2006 10:24 PM

Yea Lexan on a street car is a dumb idea... just gotta live with it man.

I have walked by cars where the alarm would chirp if I got close enough to it. Usually like 2 feet. I dont have much knowledge on them but here is the first link that popped up when I googled "perimeter car alarms".

Perimeter Car Alarms

This could at least make them think twice about getting too close to your car. Although, now that I think of it, plan B may just be to throw the brick through your window from farther away.

Oh well, just another option for you.

Thanks. I had that option added later on when I install my new alarm

why is your car attractive to thieves if you don't live in the ghetto? I think that was the right question in the first place.

Do you live near a major highway - easy in and out?
Is there something in or on your car that says "hey! expensive stuff inside! come steal it!"?

Thieves typically aren't attracted to a car unless there's something there that says "steal me." Something inside the car - stereo, LCD, computer, CDs, iPod, etc. or indication of such inside. Get a dark tint (state legal limit, maybe a little below), hide stuff that's desirable, park under a streetlight or in a place where people are likely to see people trying to break in, secure the car with the best alarm you can buy, with a backup battery and horn, etc...

They'll pass if it's not immediately obvious that it's worth their time and if there's a less problematic vehicle nearby.

What has been stolen? Or has it just been broken windows? Any other cars targeted in the area? Maybe someone just doesn't like you?
ScoobyNubieToo! 06-01-2006 11:10 PM

Get an alarm with a 2way paging option and a perimeter sensor, like what they use in convertibles. Also get the optional piezo pain sensor for the persistant little bastard who will just continue trying to pry your radio out with the alram going off.....it'll deafen him. Wouldn't hurt to drop the little extra cash to buy the secondary backup battery and the anit-tow sensor.
chaddeus 06-01-2006 11:39 PM

I had all the stuff that you mentioned :) and its going to be installed somewhere next week.

Also, ever think maybe its the same retard doing it everytime? I know its a stupid thing to do (hit the same car multiple times) but, I've seen dumber...

I suspect that a couple of break in are by the same person. However, the last one at Indianapolis is a different person I think since Bloomington and Indianapolis is pretty far (60miles)

I don't know what you mean by Ghetto area. Bloomington, Indiana is a nice college town. Its a very peaceful small city.

The interior of my car is always free of clutters. This means I don't put my mobile phone or iPOD inside the car. I already had a reflective illegal tint 20%. The first few break in, nothing was stolen but they did try to remove the front bezel but the AVIC wasn't taken. Only the last break in, did they remove the navigation, cut the battery wire in the afternoon at a mall parking garage!!!

I think Subaru in general is being targetted recently in my area cos a friend of mine driivng a Subaru was also a victim. Then I saw another black Subaru also a victim.

Probably just dumb luck and a lack of alarm. I had an alarm on my previous car and parked it outside my g/f's apartment for almost a year with no problems. The 1 night I didnt have the led in (took it out to find another color) someone tried to break into it. The minute they opened the door the alarm went off and they took off, but depending on the city you live in, just having that led will scare someone off. Like they say, if someone wants your car, they're gonna take it cause theres a way around everything, but the city I live in isn't too big (about 140,000. 200,000 if you count the neighboring city which is pretty much seperated by a river) The bigger cities, I hear and have read, is where its rediculous what people go through to get your shiz.

Stop leaving endless IPOD's on your passenger seat.

JK. But there's probably a reason why thieves target your car. Look to eliminate those reasons and save yourself a lot of money.

And lexan windows are easier to break than glass. Especially the racing app ones. They are thin and light.

Well, here in Bloomington, Indiana. The population is 69,291 in 2005 so you see, Bloomington is a super small village.
