License plate location...cool?

Thoughts, comments, criticizims? Yes I know it blocks the fog, but I'll have STi Covers soon so it won't really matter. I hate front license plates, but since i got ticketed for not having one, i figured I'd do something intresting...

looks kool, but i think it would look better if it were a little higher, and oh yeah... how much was your ticket for not having your plate in the front? because i dont have one either and i havnt been pulled over yet...
moss 07-15-2002 10:46 PM

not sure yet... I think itll be around a $65 fine :( as far as moving it up... if I do that, I block the turn signal... thats no good!

You know, you only have to leave the plate on long enough for traffic court;) That's the only time my car ever has a front plate:D

I really don't care for it myself. I'm in Ohio, and have never run with a front plate since I got the RS in June '99. Luckily I haven't been pulled over or fined for it, but if I was to put my plate on I'd put it where it belongs. Off to the side just looks like you had no choice or something.
moss 07-16-2002 12:55 AM

Well, as far as I know, if I get pulled over again w/o a front plate, I get points on my licesnse (??) and I really dont like where the plate sits in the middle of the radiator, so I figured i'd do something different :)

so how is it mounted on? why and by what?
dead-eye 07-16-2002 01:44 AM

It doesn't look right because it's covering the foglight. It makes the front end look uneven. I think someone on this board made a motorized plate that would retract the license plate.
whiterabbit 07-16-2002 01:52 AM

how do you have it held up?
MagicMT 07-16-2002 02:39 AM

Can't you just leave your front license plate in your front windshield? Lots of people do that, not sure if that's CA legal or not though.

Its not .....and its not the safest thing to do either ....accident and flying pieces of sheet metal could spell trouble

nope, it has to be on the FRONT on the car, "front lisense plate" at least i know thats how it is here in va....thought they keep on trying to pass a law for just one lisense plate.. i heard thats how they get radar is fron teh front lisense plate? correct me if i am wrong
Zephry 07-16-2002 05:59 AM

Location seems pretty good. I used have my front plate all the time but I took it down recently because my rex looks better without it. I believe all states require front plate but I've never been pulled over for one. And yes, front plate is highly reflective. That is why police points the laser close to the plate.

beware, I just got a ticket for it about 2 months ago

except Dublin cops have nothing better to do. There's waaaaay too many and there's NO crime. I see 10 S4's roll down the street every day though with no front plate. This could have just been discriminatory though I guess.
lakepop 07-16-2002 06:58 AM

Don't like it!..........covers the fog light , making it look like a rookie slap it on job!......also imbalances the overall look.

Sorry......but its just my .02 so do what you want...it is YOUR machine and I'm all in favor of everyone doing their own thing! ;)
cindergarden 07-16-2002 09:35 AM

my friend took his and zip tied it to the bottom the bumper so it hangs belows.....it handgs a few inches of the ground btu it does scrape....my idea would be put it behind the grill on the inside ( if you have a grill i cant tell if its opened or grilled ) it wont be too noticeabl but at least its there

Yes, do a search for "Lidar" and youll see what the deal is. There are a few plastic liscense plate covers that scatter the lidar available... ive been thinking of getting one. Im not sure how legal the plate in the window is.
Yall need to check your state laws websites and find out what the requirement might be.
Theres a thread that has a bunch of links concerning lighting placement/requirements for Illinois im the MW forums somewhere.

as for the placement of your plate, i dont like the fact that it blocks the foglight either. your also blocking your drivers side brakes air duct.
for functionality it might be best in the center where it was, but up a few inches... i dunno.. .ive also seen a few people that have slightly bent thier plates in twards the radiator at the bottom where the plate hangs over the bumper support. Unsure of the legality of that as well, i know someone from the MW got hasseled for it before, no ticket, but hassled none the less.
AlanTheWoo 07-16-2002 12:07 PM

i just completely removed mine, but i leave it under the seat and whenever i'm travelling, put it on the dash. i live in tx and i think the rule is that you just have to have it anywhere that can be seen from the front. but, it's also acceptable to have a decorative front license plate. i saw another wrx that had a really small subaru plate. the dimensions were like 2"x5" and it was perfect because it covered up the license plate holes and i think the cops will give you some slack for having at least that, but of course if they're snatches, they'll still give you a ticket anyway. i wish i knew where he got that little subaru one though.

Install hinges and put it in the factory location. when you are driving it will tuck up but when you aree stopped it will hang in the original spot. its the best of both worlds, reduces air restriction and no tickets.:D
MagicMT 07-16-2002 02:45 PM

What about cutting the front plate? I've seen that a few times. The top and bottom are cut off, leaving a slim plate with only numbers.
jesse370 07-16-2002 06:56 PM

I know most states don't like it if the plate is cut up like that. Its a shame I don't want that huge stupid yellow jersey tag up front but what can you do?
TygerStile 07-16-2002 07:57 PM

I got a fix-it ticket for not having my front plate. It was just an add on ticket cuz I got pulled over for something else. The only thing I had to do was show up at the CHP, and have them right off the ticket after they checked that my plate was back on the front. That was on my old Nissan. But driving around in my WRX with no plate, I havent been pulled over once. My bro put his front plate in his windshield, and he hasnt been pulled over either. I know in Cali both are illegal, but I dont think cops really care, because everyone does it.
Moss- I dont think thats a bad spot for your license plate. I personally wouldnt put it there, but as long as you like it...
whiterabbit 07-16-2002 09:18 PM

I would like to put my plate on the side like that but can't figure out a way to mount it without drilling into the bumper. anyone?

I guess these covers might make some sense on the Rear Plate.... for the front plate, which is the discussion here, bend plate down/back so that it angled toward ground somewhat, and not reflective straight forward. For lidar/laser stealth, I read somewhere best check is take flash photo of your car at night from 20 ft or so away and see what reflects in photo to assist in stealth assessment.
