Get a Valentine One, no excuse not to.

I've used the Escort Passport 8500 x50 for a couple of years now, and I have had great results with it.
Some suggestions:
It really makes a difference where you mount it. I have mine mounted (with the suction cups) about 3-4 inches above the center clock console. I only mount the detector when I am actually going to need it.
Don't get the cordless version, it is not as good because it runs on batteries.
Do some research about how radar works and what types the police use. This will help you use it most effectively. Just do some google searches, you will find plenty of info. Make sure you know what type of radar/laser the police in your area (state?) use. Here in Cali, police use either Ka band or Laser. 99% of the time the Ka warning goes off, I see the cop a few seconds later (the number of seconds depends on how fast you're going).
No radar detector will save your ass on its own, no matter how expensive. You still have to be smart about speeding
Oh ya, it always helps to have a rabbit on the road...

I'd to go with a Escort 50X or the Valentine 1.
| PhatheadWRX | 10-10-2005 07:23 AM |
1) With the Valentine 1 you get two top dollar detectors in one.
2) V1 is crazy sensitive. (I have picked up cops over 3.5 miles away)
3) Once you live with a V1 you will never know how you lived without it.
I run my V1 in small "L" mode (X band silent, city), people do not like the V1 because they say it picks up too many false warnings, but I say better safe than sorry. Not to mention with the V1 if it is detecting 4 or more it is likely a cop.

i run with a cobra 11 channel, my father has a Valentine 1. mine does the job and keeps me out of trouble, but his is positively sweet. i recommend it if you have the bucks. a standard detector will pay for itself the first time you hear beeps and slow down as a cop comes into view. the V1 will pay for itself after 2 of those. after that the benefit is immeasurable. i'd say spring for the V1.
| WallyKincaid | 10-10-2005 02:12 PM |
Im with the V1 guys. I bought some Cobra (dont remember model number) and it worked pretty good. I was usually careful about speeding. But I had a couple bad experiences where the radar only alerted me I got tagged, and still didnt start beeping until I was on the side of the road with the cop behind me. I say spend the extra couple hundred to a company instead of a court house.
| doublej | 10-10-2005 02:16 PM |
dont forget the bogey arrow! it tells u what direction the cop/frequency is coming from NOONE HAS THAT BUT V1
| ducmaan748 | 10-10-2005 02:18 PM |
this is going to turn into another...V1 kicks a$$ so i would just recommend going out and buying one.

I agree. Either one works very well. I have been using an Escort for over a year now and am very happy with it.

Go for a passport 8500 X50, trust me, it works great. I drive to and from school, san antonio TX to Cleveland OH, 4 times a year. When i drove back for the summer in my old truck (sense sold) I averaged 110mph and did the trip in just over 20 hours. It works so well it got to the point where people would fall in behind me to tail me, and id just wait for the meter to start climbing, swing behind a Big rig at the last minute, and watch the people behind me get chased by the patriotic lights. So yea, trust me, it works. :)

The only place to get a Valentine One is Valentine Research at 1 800 331 3030. Ask for a returned V1 and you get 10% off the retail price of $399 and that is the latest version with one year warranty.

V1 has my vote... but what's wrong with going the speedlimit?
...unless you're going on long trips? :D

I love my V1. Saved my butt a few times. But having a radar doesnt guarantee you won't get pulled over. You still have to obey sped limits.

Best testing resource out there... Police testing radar detectors ect.
Note they don't give V1 any extra points for having rear detection or for the bogey counter. All I'm going to say is that I trust my V1. Sure, you get falses - but you learn what's false and what's real pretty quick on the road.
Also - the V1s now feature K and KA band Pop detection, which happened after that testing.

You can get it online but you can't get 10% off the $399 price like you can if you call them directly.
