Meguiar's gel works great. Not too shiny and it comes with a sponge that keeps it on the sidewall and off the tread. It also works well on mudflaps and black plastic side sills.
If shiny sidewalls affect your handling, you need better tires! ;)

Tire sponge, and Mop-N-Glow. Black and not too shiny. It's great on interior trim, too, and lasts forever!!

ah clean tires

To clean - Westley's Bleche White. It's THE stuff to clean tires with. I don't follow the directions though. I make sure the tires/wheels are nice and wet, then I spray it directly on the tire and let it sit for a few minutes. Then lightly scrub and rinse. Do the wheels too. (It says it'll eat the wheels... I ignore it). Once you've washed with Westley's, brake dust won't stick to the wheel... it wipes off with a dry cloth.
To shine - Meguires stuff.

meguires gel is kinda weird if you don't have a smooth tire. Lots of ridges gets the gel stuck in b/t them

Supa Shine
If you really want that black, shinny, "car show day tire" I suggest: First clean the wheel with some Super Clean, to get all that brown off. Next, dry the tire and put on that Meguires Gel. And for the final touch.... Spray on a layer of Stoners, More Shine less Time!

Brat - The Meguires goo lasts for several weeks unless you're driving through puddles. Only down side is if you put too much on it tends to fly off and you get crud on your paint.

I put mopNglow on my interior. I HATED IT!!!! It was sticky, messy, it stunk, and on top of all that, it only had a very dull shine to it! took weeks to get the stuff off, and get the stink out of there. I don't theink they will ever find that bottle. I threw it so hard.
BTW, I have used both Meguires Tire Gel, and black magic. The MTG is very sturdy stuff. I drove on it for about 2.5 weeks, through rain and everything, and it kept the tires vey black, and with a dull shine.
But I like the super shine of black magic. It has, and keeps that wet look, for about a week or so.

Eagle One Tire Cleaner. And an alternative to the Tire Gel is a Tire Wax. Not as wet looking, but it makes the tires shine and it stays that way for weeks. Also won't spin off on your car.

How about Silver? Or Green? Or Red? Or Blue?

I keep seeing that colored gel in the store. It seems like a HUGE marketing mistake to me. Who would want that stuff? :p
I can't wait til I see some chrome covered pimpmobile with that on their tires.
Personally I use a gel. I think the one I have is Turtle Wax.

I also use Bleche White, but I do it with the tires dry to keep the water from diluting it. I spray it on heavy, then SCRUB the tire with a stiff brush. Then after I dry my car and tires, I use Meguires gel stuff, but with my SP5000 that have grooves, it's easier to use a spray but it doesn't last anywhere near as long as the gel.

BLUE BLUE BLUE!!!
I use the BLUE!!!
it's actually cool,
its not like the picture on the box
you hardly see it until you're driving then it catches the light, but not as much as the box shows

Finish
I use this

as a base coat and then, I use a wax applicator pad to apply the liquid form of the same stuff. I use enough so that when applied it leaves beads on the tire. I let it sit until dry and they shine like they're wet. look

The above product is very easy to use and it last quit a long time.
It doesn't really show the color unless it's under the sun. I use the red and it's pretty fun:)
