want to mount it on the lower open part of the grill
| BlackBeastie | 01-31-2002 02:42 PM |
I just did this last night, I was going to put together a how to for the whole deal. cost of materials? about 7-8 bucks (less than $3 if you already have the paint). Total start to finish took me about 3 hours.
edit: forgot to mention i did all 3 parts at the same time

Looks good.
| BlackBeastie | 01-31-2002 03:14 PM |
GM991, is that where you wanted to mount it or did you want to have it in front of that center pillar? how did you want to have the mesh cover the area?
| GM991 | 01-31-2002 03:17 PM |
Like yours behind. Probably easier to mount..:)

Blacke Beastie will be posting some pics and tips soon.

You can use angle cutters or some people call it dikes... well that is what i used...

Tin snips would be the easiest. You get gutter gaurd from Leow's, Home Depot or wherever. It comes in pieces like 5" x 36" for about .80 a sheet. 3 sheets is all that you will need (5 if you want to make 2 sets). You will need to remove your scoop and your grill (removal of which is self-explanetory or described elsewhere, i will try to post pics, though). Test fit the pieces, mark them with a marker and decide where to drill holes. You will need tiwst ties and enamel paint (If you decide to paint). The lower grille is the most difficult and the smaller the hands the better for negotiating the twist ties. I have pics of the twist ties and holes that I will post after I get them off my camera. You will have to drill some holes, though. It is barely noticeable and secures the mesh pretty well. Pics to come

BlackBeastie,
Since you and I both have Black WRX's I thought you might share what paint you used?

I had previously purchased some paint to do my headlight mod. It was high temp semi gloss. Any enamel spray would work though. I don't think I put on enough coats. The finish will hold up against chips from road debris a lot better with more coats. If you have primer, that probably wouldn't hurt either.

I am in the middle of putting together the web page for this install. It will be done soon. If I can just get my boss to stop giving me work ;). I will post the link here when it is done.
| jajogega | 02-01-2002 06:35 PM |
that's exactly the way i have it too. i just don't have a camera to take a pic. i personally like the way it looks behind the grill rather then in the front.
| North | 02-01-2002 07:44 PM |
That looks great!! I think I may do that for my silver WRX. Keeps the bugs from denting the front radiator and also collecting on the intercooler! I'll have to keep my eyes open for your webpage with the details on how to install.

Thats not a Honda! Chicken wire (gutter guard) is against the law on a Subaru. Isn't it?

This was not done primarily for looks. This is to protect my car from being beaten up too badly by road debris. If you don't want to do it or don't like it, fine, but don't criticize people that do want to do this. This is the "dress up and style forum", not the "make your car look like STEALTHBMBR would like it to" forum. My mods do not have to be approved by you.

I put gutter guard in the hoodscoop of my MY01 RS. Instead of placing it vertically it is placed horizontally because that way I could attach it without any drilling. I just used the screws for the hoodscoop :)
Chicken wire (gutter guard) is against the law on a Subaru. Isn't it?
Not even close. Grill mesh threads pop up every week or so and the majority of the advice is to use gutter guard. There are few other alternatives and they are far more expensive.

Guess I'm gonna be swingin' by Home Depot today.
| Stealthbmbr | 02-04-2002 09:24 AM |
 Just thought...never mind. And I never riced anything. The body shop next door puts chiken wire on everything that leaves there, stock accords, jettas, corollas, etc. It just gets on my nerves that's all. Didn't mean to p*** anyone off.

i cut out the plastic and add the mesh there.....only did it since i was plannin to get a new grill....
its not really hondaish.....is makes the grill have a smaller opennin therefore better chance of blockin debris....
try not to listen to members whos over 10,000 hahahahha jk!

that's ok. i guess i should be used to criticism. i know that i have had to bite my tongue on many occasions. there is a similar grill modification that puts this grill right out in front and leaves it silver. that would be too much for me. i wanted a more subtle look. to each his own. :)

My late teen yrs.? you were what 6? Got my first car when you were 4, a 77 Honda Civic, paid $100. $5 gas would last 2 weeks. 1200cc motor, 3 bbl carb and 4 speed. Top speed...80 something. You could sit in the drivers seat and rest your arms on both doors. man that car was small, it weighed like 1000lbs. 4(big)people could carry it across a parking lot.

There are different kinds of gutter guard, at least at Lowe's.

unite - Thanks, glad you like it.
The only problem I have had with the plastic gutter guard is that it is a bit soft. The upside is tha it never gets dull and you don't have to paint it or anything. It is also a lot easier to apply than the metal stuff.
