Montoya out at McLaren, de la Rosa in

Juan Pablo Montoya will leave the McLaren team with immediate effect after coming to a mutual agreement. The move will let Montoya join NASCAR sooner and give him more time to get up to speed with the series. McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa will replace Montoya in France.
"Juan Pablo is an exciting driver and immensely likeable character who will undoubtedly make a successful transition to the NASCAR scene," said McLaren team boss Ron Dennis in a statement issued on Tuesday morning. "We have agreed that with so many things happening in Juan Pablo's life right now, he should take some time out of the car and prepare professionally and personally for the future."
De la Rosa will make his second race appearance for the team following a points scoring debut in the 2005 Bahrain Grand Prix when he deputised for the injured Montoya.
"I'm of course extremely thrilled to have this opportunity to race the MP4-21 - a car in which I'm really comfortable," said de la Rosa. "I know the MP4-21 better than anyone else and I'm confident that I can achieve important World Championship points for the team."
Well this is even more surprising...guess it gives McLaren some time to test new drivers out. I wonder if Wurz is now wishing he had stayed. I also wonder if this means that Hamilton will get a chance to drive a race before the year is out. Now I have to find a new driver to root for.

Well that ruined my day...
i really would have liked him to race out the rest of the season having little to no pressure on him...
That would have been fun......

I'm surprised that they aren't making him stay off the car, but stuck to the team doing promotions, etc. for the rest of the year. I guess Ron does have a heart after all.

I've always liked Pete Rose. And, he's always been fast as a McLaren tester. I'm going to pick him for thie points this week on pick 6.

Should be interesting seeing who gets the #2 seat for Macca next year. Pedro or Lewis? I'd probably give the nod to Pedro simply due to his experience, and Lewis on the #2 McLaren team.

Ugh... terrible. I have nothing against de la Rosa, but this sudden departure is just depressing. What a horrible, horrible season McLaren has been having...

Agreed. You really can't avoid the fact that this isn't a good situation for F1 in general.
I'm also with Finnrex...
I didn't think after the alleged offer to JPM to stay on next year that Hamilton would be on board for 07. I'm not convinced he's getting that seat so quickly...
We'll see...

Bernies gonna take a big viewer hit from the South American/Columbian markets. I'm sure Maccas sponsors are'nt too happy about this change either. They paid for JPM not Pedro.
I guess sometimes the shoe is on the other foot.

Hows this going to effect the manufacturers c'ship? Can Pedro really pick it up where JPM left? Perhaps...maybe even do it better? Was it him or Wurz that scored some good points last year when JPM was out?
| nKoan | 07-11-2006 12:33 PM |
de la Rosa scored some points with a 5th place in Bahrain last year.
| Ferg | 07-11-2006 12:37 PM |
Wurz also snagged a thrid place (after Jenson was thrown out) at Imola last year subbing for JPM.
I hope McLaren takes the chance to put Paffett in the car at least once this year. The championships are over for Macca so really what have they got to lose at this point.

Does anyone think that PDR can win a race if he has the car under him?
| Ferg | 07-11-2006 01:21 PM |
Sure he could.
I think most of the drivers on the grid could win a GP given the right car.

I think PDR (PDLR?) will be a solid points finisher, but I don't think he can win this year. Its possible, but not really probable in my opinion. Maybe after a season or two in an actual race seat. Being a good test driver is different then being up against the likes of Alonso, Schumacher and Raikonen when they are in top form.

Perhaps this is a good time to develop a 'cultural exchange' program between NASCAR and Formula 1. They've taken pretty boy Juan Pablo, so we get... good ol' boy Tony Stewart? It would be cool if there were an international motorsports team that would allow such jumping back and forth.

Red Bull would do it.

Red Bull should have their own NASCAR team too!

I think they will (at least as a title sponsor) next season with one of the new Toyota teams.

Yeah, they are planning on running a Camry team. It's as an actual team, Team Red Bull.

I don't think PdlR has what it takes to win while Kimi is still in the team, he's a decent test driver but didn't really ever do much at Arrows or Jaguar. I do like his helmet though.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed Columbians today :(
While I would of liked to see Montoya stay through the end of this season, I can understand why they let him go. It would have been great seeing Montoya going all out without any worries about next season (as long as Kimi wasn't right in front of him on the First Lap).

Colombians too!

^^^ I was talking more about the fine people at Columbia Records (I've heard they are die hard Montoya/F1 fans), but I guess the people from Montoya's homeland in Colombia will also be very dissapointed :p
| jetfan2207 | 07-12-2006 05:04 PM |
How well do you think he will do in NASCAR? I assume an F1 car and a NASCAR are so different that it would be like starting over as far as knowledge, also, NASCAR cars are equal for the most part, so I guess we'll see how good he really is.
| nKoan | 07-12-2006 06:00 PM |
I think he has the potential to be successful, in 08. He'll probably be a backmarker for a while, while he gets used to the car and the series, but one thing about NASCAR is how easy it is to go from the back to the front (and back) within a few laps.
