Mounting roll bar: On top of tar/insulation or shave?

I am about to install an AutoPower roll bar right now and im curious as to what you all think I should do. As most of you know the car comes with this tar stuff that is used for sound deadening and what not. Do you think it will be fine to mount on top of this? Or should I go ahead and save it off down to the metal?

take it off! all of it! it weighs nearly 10 kg!

do you have any pics of your install?

I like the autospeed bars but they looks as if they are for track cars only because it appears as if you have to remove the rear seats and even if you didnt you couldnt get a passenger back there. I'd love to see pics of the bar when its installed though it is very nice looking.

If you are going to weld it in you have to clean it off.

You *never* want a rear passenger "in there" after you install a roll bar. It doesn't matter what "brand" it is.

Why are you putting the bar in? It matters because of the rules.

If it's a harness bar or a simple roll hoop, and its padded, and your passenger wears his seatbelt its no big deal. If it is a cage like this one that has a side bar that covers the side door and goes to the C-pillar then you can't have a passenger because a side impact will be decapitating.

Would you put foam rubber between your wheel nuts and the wheel?
I also round the corners of the plates so they act less like a can opener.

the tires would never touch that anyways. if they did, youd have bigger problems than a tire!
| blue blurr | 03-14-2006 04:39 PM |
Yeah, All that stuff is gone now so it doesnt matter. Although the foam thing is a bit different then the tar thing. And yeah, theres no way the tire can hit the underside of the plate in the wheel well.

No, if its padded, you STILL don't want a passenger in there. It would be instant death if you had an accident. I won't comment further on this because obviously you have no idea what you are talking about.

I cut the carpet and insulation when I installed mine. However, I did not scrape off the undercoating.
And to reiterate what Tom said, no person should EVER be allowed to ride in the back seat with a roll bar/harness bar installed. I would remove the seats in the back so that people won't even get the idea (what I did).

Thats exactly what I did, theres no rear seat nor seats belts anymore. I took off the tar stuff on the inside of the car where it mounts, but not under the car. I saved about 90ish pounds taking off the rear seat, seat belts and trunk stuff.

real sick dude. looks great!

You should do this every once in a while with any bolt-in rollbar anyways, but the tar does compress/squish-out/soften in summer heat etc. The mounting bolts will loosen up as a result, so you need to retorque them.

Already thinking about that, probably re tighten in a few.

You know, getting the main hoop inside the car wasn't really that hard. The hardest part was getting the legs attached to the main hoop once it was all inside.
| darioc | 03-27-2006 07:29 AM |
wow... just installed mine last night... that was the worst! so akward to get in, so hard to attach the legs, so scuffed up! ugh.
but now, i think it was all worth it!
