My $2 TMIC Screen/Cover

Didn't do a search for this, apologize if this has been posted already.
Took my Intercooler off, shakes it upside down and out came a handful of small pebbles/dead bugs. The results of RallyX and highspeed Dry lake drift sessions. So i decided to take a stroll thru Lowes and see what kind of poormans IC screen i can fab up. Then i came across this baby, its some type of vent cover for outside of house, made of alumium and on the bottom side has a fine metal mesh/screen. ID# EV 16 x 6 MILL $1.??.
Popped up the hood, dropped right in, when you close the hood, the skirt will keep it in place.
What do you guys think? Ghetto?

Hmmmn....seems like the angle of the fins might actually cause a problem with airflow htting the intercooler directly. I would just use a chicken wire or gutter guard typ open mesh, not something with angled fins like that, because if the airflow hits the find "broad-side" air will not get to the actual intercooler, and you're not going to be making much power.

uhm... thats super ghetto. Talk about blocking airflow

I know its Ghetto Fabulous...
I was just excited to find a product under two bucks at Lowes and drops right in.
Under normal conditions in southern california i don't really need one.
Except under these conditions:

Thats smart, block the airflow while you race the car!
Ditch the dumb vent dude...

Geez we are quite harsh....
I guess all the testing we need to determine its a bad idea is looking at a picture on a computer screen.....real world test? f that I can tell it wont work because it looks like it wont work...

It doesn't look like it would block anything from getting into the IC anyways...except big stuff.
| BIGSKYWRX | 03-10-2006 11:12 PM |
Nope- that is blocking air- a fairly sgnificant amount by the looks of it. You also must be very cautious on disturbing the seal fitment- you can seriously effect (negatively) air flow w/ the seal not fittting correctly.
Consider a mesh screen (not too fine) on your scoop if your getting too much debris.

You could have bought something much more effective, at Lowes, for the same price... Regular screen material used for windows.
| joehack98 | 03-11-2006 12:20 AM |
The screen would probably be equally restrictive. If you were to delete all the "holes" on the screen and just have a soild piece of material, how much of the IC would you block?
| sidewindr | 03-11-2006 02:35 AM |
Thanks for all the input, although kinda harsh, but hey, i put myself to it.
If you look at the last picture on the top, that pic was taken from the outside where the air would enter the IC when car is moving. At that point/angle it doesn't look like there is too much restriction, if anything it looks like a bunch of air diverters to spread the air flow. But looking from overhead, the restriction and heat dissipation is definately affected.
Although i'll be driving around this weekend with it for fun/testing. But i've gone 105k miles without it, but i may throw it on for a nasty 60 second RallyX run.
i got another idea, oh uh... i'll paint it pink, and stencil STi on it, sell it on ebay!

I picked up gutter gaurd and it came with some clips to hold it. They work magic on my intercooler. The holes are not real big, but far from small. but the big rocks and leaves will be kept out.
| CGM_WRX | 03-11-2006 01:28 PM |
I would think that blocking any debri before it even eneters the scoop would be much more effective than trying to block it after it has already made its way to the intercooler.
| o2sys | 03-11-2006 01:45 PM |
it looks hot...but again "we" dont really know what it might do to the airflow
| STimpede | 03-11-2006 05:51 PM |
might have to worry about your air filter more than your top mount IC for those kinds of things
| o2sys | 03-11-2006 06:08 PM |
with subaru paint i dont quite feel comfortable doing that....snow is lil different but just plain dirt and rocks.....
| sidewindr | 03-11-2006 06:13 PM |
Pink paint scheme coming up, its drying right now.. so funny.
Walmart just happend to have this small can of plastikote quick drying enamel that matched the STI pink to a T.
(spraying/stencil STI logo on top will be hard due to the slotted suface)

u know I was thinking the same thing....I wonder how intercoolers mounted behind the return vents in my house will keep big stuff from getting sucked up through them :)

Go run the car hard for 20 minutes with that on. After you are done, pop the hood, remove the vent cover, and touch the fins... If they are still cool, then the IC is still doing its job. If its hot, or even really warm, then it is majorly disrupting the airflow over the fins. Got knock?
| sidewindr | 03-12-2006 04:14 PM |
10-4 Good experiment.
Will try that later or tomorrow.
Oh crap! Its raining in socal! i don't know how to drive anymore! ;-)

Just my .02 but it doesn't seem to obstruct air flow much at all. It's more like diverting it. Think of it alot like reverse hood scoops- they still do the job even though the scoop is facing the opposite way. Air will find it's way through it fine it seems. The only thing I'd say is how you have it setup right now may not protect the fins as much as if you turned it 180 degrees so the fins point toward the back. It would seem to shield against smaller rocks better. Did you happen to notice if you found screens like that in different sizes?
| Tim-H | 03-12-2006 07:36 PM |
you said that it has a screen attatched already, for $2 it might be worth buying just to remove and use the screen.

That was exactly my 1st reaction when i saw the screen, didn't like the shark fins, figured i could cut it up and leave the screen. For two bucks, this is disposable.
But when i threw it on the IC, the angle of the fins seems to be horizontal or parallel to the ground, it looks like tiny airsplitters.
