Nuts Rally Videos
For those who think they car drive, some of these videos may make you think otherwise.
Haven't seen them in a long time, but they're Audi videos from the group B era.

Simply stunning:

the people along (and sometimes in) the road are stupid! cool vids though
Pacobeagle 08-31-2005 02:03 PM

That guy was dancing on those pedals!!!!!!!! My jaw dropped to the floor, AWESOME.
Libila 08-31-2005 02:29 PM

Those are great videos, especially the last one.
JWX 08-31-2005 02:50 PM

anybody have a way to save these?

Audi Quattro=pimp ***** awesome 80s music

ftp://ftp.sysadmin-racing.com/videos/Compilations/

look at climbdance. in my opinion, better, with better better camera angles, no bad music, just the beautiful sound of a rally machine, and more artistic scenes.

Very nice vids.
Its amazing they could keep those bullets going in 1 direction.

Good God! If he'd lost it, many spectators would have been toast.

I wonder why he feathered the gas up and down so much? Maybe their throttles were kinda on-off and not very progressive.
Jon Bogert 08-31-2005 05:07 PM

Locked center diff. H pattern gearbox.

I'd love to see today's prissy WRC drivers have to manhandle a car like that. Sebastian Loeb without active diffs = a retired gymnast.

Probably for weight transfer and transition turns.

pumping the throttle like that around tight turns works in autocross for those of us without a DCCD ;) It keeps the speed up while letting the front wheels bite a bit.

Bingo :)

500-600HP with mid-eighties technology on loose surfaces = not all that smooth of a power band :( Sort of like the 917's Penske used to run in Can-Am 10 years earlier. Donohue and Follmer had to totally re-learn how to drive (they talked about turbo-lag in the seconds range  ).

It got to the point where the cars were so fast that the drivers could not mentally keep up with them. - They were so fast in a straight line that it took about 10 years (of cornering ability development) until they started breaking the stage times set during the Group B era. - Add in a few horrible accidents and Group B was gone after a few years.

some could handle it, most could not tho.
Rodan 09-01-2005 10:03 AM

Personally am happy with the new rule changes that will put more emphasis on the driver rather then the technology.
Rodan 09-01-2005 10:18 AM

I think Henri Toivonen's accident was that last straw.

I think you'll find most people think the opposite, that modern tech. has made the cars much easier to drive, and that Gr. B drivers had more actual driving skill.
Orson 09-01-2005 12:45 PM

Someone tell me how to save those files!!!

The option to "save as" is greyed out.
zoomfactor 09-01-2005 12:58 PM

I always wondered which driver did those laps at Estoril...
Henri Toivonen drove an S4 around Estoril, the Portuguese Grand Prix circuit, so quickly that he would have qualified sixth for the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix.
From http://www.stormloader.com/groupb/

while it would be cool to see B back, there is a reason they aren't allowed ;)

Rules changes for next year are banning active diffs, so you'll get to see how Sebastien Loeb handles sliding a car. And either way, he is a retired gymnast, so I don't think the diffs are what make the difference! ;)

It's not a Group B car, but Mitsubishi has been running without active diffs all year this year.

I bet most (if not all) of today's "prissy" WRC drivers would love to have a chance to manhandle a car like that. Who wouldn't??
Steve '02 WRX 09-06-2005 03:20 PM

It seems in every sport people like to theorize how the athletes (or drivers) of the past would blow away the current participants. I believe that in almost every case the current guys would blow away the players (drivers) of the past due to better training and the more universal availability of information now, and in most cases a larger group of participants to choose from. If you put the modern drivers in the old Group B cars and gave them equal time to practice and learn the vehicles I believe they would be able to do at least as well and most likely better than the drivers of that day.

They started running an active center diff in NZ; still normal fr and rr diffs at that point though, unlike the competition.

I think the hand writing was already on the wall. Like you said Henri & Sergio's tragic accident was the final straw. It's a wonder more spectators weren't killed back in the good old days. I read a quote from Michelle Mouton after her 1984 Portugal victory that is really amazing to me. When asked how she could drive so fast with all those people just inches from the road she said " you must think of them as trees not people".

Thanks for posting those videos fastfreddy.

I want a 600hp car and an open road. (yes- I have a death wish, to die happy)

WOW.

I'd say the trees have the edge in the IQ department, but damn, I must say it must have been a rush to be standing inches away from a 600hp beast tearing by at 100mph.

Great vids, great thread. A+++++++ would click again!
