Would Windex Hurt The Dash?
sup,

i just need to dust off my dash and was wondering if windex would do any harm to it? of course i'm going to wipe it off.

thanks. :)

It's probably best to use ammonia-free Windex, then. Same goes if your windows are tinted.
migs76 11-03-2003 07:05 AM

some ppl just use a damp cloth/rag. i like 303 aero protectant, uv protects, not too shiny, doesn't attract too much dust either.
gerbs 11-03-2003 08:25 AM

using a glass cleaner like windex is fine, but will look like it's collecting faster

it'd be best to use something like Endust -- just buy a can for $2.99 and try it  (it's what i use and it's flawless.)

edit: oh btw -- i DO use windex (ammonia-free) for my insturment panel and anything that is plastic in my rex :alien:

I guess you could use it but I'd recommend if you have no choice to wet the towel with it instead of direct application.

I used once on the dash and doors some protectant wipes and never again. It was too greasy and didn't like the way it left the surface. Now all I do is wipe it down with a water damp cotton towel.

thanks everyone. :)

swifer dust wipes, work great
2k2 11-03-2003 08:29 PM

Don't use it... Ammonia=not good for vinyl
OCD 11-03-2003 08:39 PM

no there are ones that u can't use b/c of ammonia but grab it makes ones that are safe to use on vinyl
Ahzlon 11-03-2003 11:15 PM

i first wipe my dash down with warm water and a lil dawn... then after i dries i take a warm damp rag and a lil vasaline..( i expect i'm gonna get comments for that ) it leaves a semi shiny / greasy look for about a day. then it goes away.. keeps the semi plasitc dash supple and helps prevent cracking... it has kept my 81 broncos dash in good shape
Brad Pittiful 11-04-2003 12:10 AM

i use a california duster...works great
gerbs 11-04-2003 12:12 AM

vasaline eh? maybe i'll try that.. wouldn't have thought the dash material could 'absorb' it  weird.....

It must make it pretty water-resistant too :D

did you think of this idea yourself? pretty darn creative if ya ask me. ;)

303 Aerospace Protectant. Werd.

Why don't you just use Armor All cleaning and protecting wipes? I got both and use cleaning first then protectant, looks great...gives a great shine and protects against UV. Oh yeh did I mention it's self-drying? :)
Ahzlon 11-05-2003 12:57 AM

I have heard some BAD stuff about armor all... like cracking your dash cause it drys it out...
but to the vasaline thing... use it sparingly... no i didnt' come up with it... my dad told me it was a good idea.. it's kept his car dashes from the early 80s lookin nice and new
DanzBorin 11-05-2003 09:24 AM

so which of these methods keeps the dash from being uber shiny? I hate that... sun + shiny dash = PITA! :furious:
migs76 11-05-2003 10:16 AM

303 makes it look showroom clean and not so shiny.

If you don't happen to have any luck with the retailer search listed above (sometimes they're not complete), you can also try marine and RV stores in your area. The two places I found it at here in Omaha sell boats and water sporting goods . . .

Good luck,

No one suggested cheap ol Armor all cleaning wipes? The protectant wipes give it that crazy shin if you want/don't want that
j.reed 11-07-2003 12:08 AM

I did...hehe...i found them quite useful, but someone said that due to the self-drying thing that it can actually damage the vinyl.

Anything that makes you dash shiney (Armor All) is the worst thing you can use. On a sunny day all you can see is the reflection of the dash in the windsheild. On the other end of the extreme racers often use psuede on their dash because of it's matte finish.
