Paint job costs?
I'm curious why re-painting isn't a very popular customization. Seems like that would be the ultimate first step in customizing (a WRX especially, because of the limited colors available at purchase).
How much does a quality paint job cost? $1500?
I'd love a nice dark dark blue or steely grey metallic... or that green available on the UK ones.
Anyone have any non-photoshopped pics of WRXes done in custom colors?

Paint jobs are usually the last thing cause they are so freakin expensive and have to take apart the car to get all the nooks n' cranny's... And most everyone goes for other modifcations that make more of a difference first...
If I could afford it though, that would have been the first thing I did to my car :p

well me personally i love the new and different things and a paint job will be up their on my mods priority list. I think most people wait until they have finished all of their exterior mods to do the paintjob.
and price. well that all depends on what you want. 1500 is not a very good paint job. Id say for a good paint job (painted fenders under hood, trunk, .......) will run atleast 2500. My paintjob on my truck was one of the last exterior mods i done. I have a 6000.00 paintjob on my truck. It is a purple dodge dakota r/t with chrome illusion Flames (4 differnt colors of chrome illusion). And much custom body work to go with it.
I plan on gettin the subie painted something crazy but not for a while. Gotta pay off some bills
if you want to see more picks of my truck their here :

It all depends on the paint. I mean, you could get away with a cheaply priced paint job, but you get what you pay for. And most people who love their cars won't pay for a half-assed job or for bad quality paint. That's why it's so damn expensive.

while we're in the topic of paint job, how much does it cost to do those "sparkling" paint job? hm.. i don't really know how to describe it... but it's like... when you look at the car at different angle.. different colors will appear.
| wrxin' | 03-10-2002 03:16 AM |
the paint your talking about is chrome illusion.. it is made by dupont. also house of kolor make a paint called kamelion which is basically the same thing. Each color set changes about 3 or 4 different shades. Thats the same thing thats on my truck but unfortunately you cant see the color change in pictures....
each pint of Chrome Illusion paint will cost around 350.00.

Cool. Thanks for the replies. I didn't realize it was that expensive, so it makes a lot more sense to me now. $3000 is a lot of money just to change your car's color from silver to midnight blue ;)

Yea it would be nice to have a custom paint job on a rex. but it is so much.

Well if you are still insterested in painting your car, there was a post a few weeks back - some dude wanted to get his painted orange-ish (great color, but not sure if it would look good on our WRX). Try finding that post. Heres one of the pics I posted for him as an option to just "plain" orange.

The good thing about those dupont paints is that you are able to pick all the colors you want for the chrome-allusion type paint jobs. You can have it fade from red to silver for example. I talked with one of the company-men last month since my friend was interested in getting a paint-job for his Chevy. I'm never gonna get a paint-job, and that's for sure, even if I had the cash to burn. I'm perfectly fine with the WR Blue color. Personally, I think it's the sweetest color in the world! Hehe

I think those mystic paint jobs look stupid unless they're done well...I see so many cars with that cheap looking green-to-purple mystic paint that looks so trashy  . But, if you put in the money like on wrxin's truck and pick some decent colors, it doesnt look bad...but think about what you could do to your car performance wise for $3000+

SUBIE GAL.... ;) I said MIGHT not loook good in Orange... AND we were talkin about the `02 WRX. I think paint color totally depends on the particular model - might look good on one model, bad on another. Either way, in general, I do like Orange.
Also, on those color-shiftin paints: I think they are totaly nice. I painted my motorcycle's tank like that a couple of years ago. Painted the flames in that type of paint, and then the rest of the tank was very similiar to the WRX blue. And I think it came out fairly sweet (espesially teh flames are not overpowering the rest of the tank). From what I have heard they, they are a total BEAR to fix if there is a chip/scratch or something like that.

isn't SCC's WRX orange? some company has an orange one that they are doing. check 2 months ago in SCC.

That's APCs project orange and blue WRX. It doesn't look to bad but I wouldn't paint my car that color.
I thought it was sponsored by the Broncos:lol:

I think eventually I may just have my repainted due to the poor subie paint. I will go with the same color silver though so I wont have to dish out extra money to get all the hard to get parts but I will definatly dish out money for quality paint and a few layers of clear coat.

huh, quality full body paint jobs costs in the neighbor hood of $7500. this includes all trim removal prior to the paint.

 I think $7,500 is a bit high.
My friend had his show truck painted and just for the outside of the truck it was $3,000. This did not include the bed, doors, under the hood ect. This was one of the best paint jobs I have ever seen.

It actually doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me though unless you intend to buy all OEM or STi parts though. Almost everything aftermarket comes unpainted
Kostamojen: That orange rex is tough.

Hoodscoop with vents and old style headlights eh? Where can I get this hood? I love that look but I don't want to change out the headlights and the grille if I could just buy the hood.

Where the heck are you guys going for paint jobs? Well excluding, wrxin'... Solid truck btw, I sold my '00 dakota for my WRX.
Anyways back on topic, I had a 95 neon that I had painted from Emerald green to Sebring silver. Cheapest I found was 1500 for the outer skin and not doing the trunk, door jams, under hood area and engine bay.
I went for those above mentioned areas for roughly $2200 with the exception of the engine bay as that was another 800 dollars.
Prices will vary TREMENDOUSLY between shops. I mean I took a Sti replica grill that was quoted anywhere from 40 bucks to $150 to paint. A friggen grill, c'mon. I've heard of people being quoted over $600 for a body kit to be painted.

Problem is with that grill that they have to buy the paint and end up not using that much...
DoinkMobb: Thats the old WRX hood, and I think that orange Impreza is imported from the UK or somewhere... You can get those hoods, but they are really freakin expensive since not many are around and the importing n stuff :(

Yeah I kinda figured it was from an old WRX. I wonder if I could just get the scoop and vents and have a custom job done. I dunno, it'd probably be too much money either way.
