Painting Calipers with regular automotive paint?

I have a whole load of WRB paint left, I was thinking I'd paint my calipers with it. Will this work well with regular clear coat or must I get teh high-temp paint.

you dont need high temp paint
unless you plan on cooking your brakes ;)
Krylon $1.99 gloss black worked for me...
and HAS worked for over 2 years

my street car is not a race car
brakes do not heat up...
they will not be heated up... ever....
thus you can use any kind of paint you want
now on the race car, i wouldnt bother
i'd burn any paint off in an hour :D

If you are using a base coat automotive paint, then you should use a clear coat over it.

Do you guys actually take off the calipers, paint them, then reattach and bleed them? I know brake fluid ruins pain, so how to you bleed them without getting the paint messed up?

I'm thinking i'm going to get white paint and stencil out "SUBARU" and then praty that in white on blue calipers. Any opinions. I'll get back and post pics when im done.

do it yet? i want to do gold calipers with a blue "wrx"
| njskatchmo | 01-06-2006 12:41 AM |
I can't until the weather warms up, or my friend puts my car in his garage.
| fantomas | 01-06-2006 12:44 AM |
hmn...true... damn. i was going to paint mine this weekend while doing an up pipe install. i might as well and go ahead and do it. if it doesn't stick perfectly, i'll just redo it in the spring when i put my summer wheels on.

the best stuff i used was duplicolor caliper kit from autozone. they give you an 8 ounce can put two coats of paint on each caliper uses only 1/4 of the can. simply clean and apply two coats cus the first may streak a bit from the brush, as does all brushes with painting, and your done. looks very nice and glossy and brake dust wipes off with your finger. and if you're thinking about the blue color, its good. dont be fooled by the baby blue pic on the cover of box, its alot darker than that. really strong stuff too and each coat dries in 15 minutes.

I would have to go with the G2 caliper paint system. I've done it before on past few cars and the outcome is awesome! There is no spray painting, you apply the paint with a brush and you can get about 2-3 coats on each caliper. When it is finished it has a real nice rich color and it will never fade.... I swear by it....

I'm thinking about blue as well for my black Impreza. Any recommendations for a blue that close to the "Prodrive" blue?

I have painted a few sets of brakes. G2 is the only way I would go from now on. I used bright red. I don't track my car but I definately have gotten those brakes to cook quite a few times. I can smell them so I'm sure of it. Go and paint your calipers with cheap paint that has a color besides black and you'll see the color fade with time. My friend used regular high temp paint on his brakes and sitting side by side I am so glad that I used the G2 stuff. I have had them painted thorugh this tough ass winter with salt and everthing and they still look perfect. If I rub my finger on them they look the same as the day they were painted. In the summer I have a wash mit for them to clean them. They look perfect when clean. Prep work has a lot to do with that as well though. I wish I could show you the comparison in person. I pay very close attention to detail and it's a no brainer to see side by side. My $.02

i know no one asked, but painted calipers look like crap without upgraded rotors. the oem wrx rotors are so tiny that it looks like crap IMHO.
+1 for Krylon

yeah my blue calipers are on a black car and my two cents thinks it looks awesome. everyone and their grandma has red ones, dont get me wrong i think painted is better than not painted. but with a darker car, blue or black looks great. and im just guessin but the blue that came with my duplicolor kit looks close to prodrive. but it doesnt matter cus paint doesnt make them perform any better. and definately add rotors. mine are slotted and drilled and with the painted calipers its a nice finish. also another thing that looks nice is these vinyl decals i found on ebay that say subaru, sti, impreza, or wrx. they wont fit on the rears even though they give them to you but its another nice touch to the fronts. as soon as i get a hold of a digital camera ill post pics if anyone wants to see
| nix-hex | 01-06-2006 08:16 PM |
and obviously, get the decals that pertain to your car. dont be like those honda kids and put a type emblem on a bone stock honda four door accord, know what i mean? :)

nix,
i'd love to see pix if you could get some up.
I'm hoping to do a brake upgrade in spring '07. Brembo slotted rotors, Goodridge SS lines, Hawk pads, and better fluid. That's probably when I'll get around to painting the calipers.
