Peugeot unveils 307 WRC
The covers have come off Peugeot's next WRC challenger the 307 World Rally Car.
Based on the coupe version of the road-going 307, the car will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
Pre-planning of the car began 15 months ago but its first wheels didn't turn until Christmas Eve 2002. Since then, the car has gone through an extensive testing programme, with test drivers Cedric Robert and Andrea Aghini doing much of the ground-work, however world champ Marcus Gronholm and Subaru-bound Richard Burns have also been behind the wheel of the new car.
The 307 WRC will take over from the triple title-winning 206, and one team insider says the 307 will be a completely new car.
"Everything in this car is new. Nothing has been carried over from the current 206. The engine, suspension, gearbox, everything they're all new parts designed for this car."
A launch date for the 307 has yet to be announced, but team boss Corrado Provera says he is planning the car to be ready for the start of the 2004 season.
"It is our target to have the car ready for next year's Monte Carlo Rally," said the Italian. "Whether the car starts next year is not our decision that is a decision which will be taken by Peugeot managing director Frederic Saint-Geours, not by Peugeot Sport."
Homologation of the rally car will be required by January 2004. To obtain homologation, 2500 307 CC 180 bhp vehicles must have been produced, at the same time, 25,000 vehicles in the 307 CC range, in 12 consecutive months.

that is indeed new and different
wheelbase looks plenty long.
hopefully burnsie remembers a thing or two from his testing of it and can let the folks a prodrive in on a few secrets.

All the other teams are trying to move to a design closer to the 206. Peug. throws a curve-ball by making a WRC car that is closer to the other teams' current cars. I hope it is a lot less competitive :D

Odd to base the rally car off the more limited CC coupe/convertible, but the coupe body looks slick enough. Reminds me a bit of my long-missed '93 Sentra SE-R.. Back shot reminiscent of an Acura CL, which isn't particularly a compliment.
Coupe body doesn't help the plight of selling pedestrian-spec hatchbacks much either, though I guess us Americans aren't supposed to be concerned about such things. *shrug*

Aparently the 307 hatchback is freaking tall. I believe that I read somewhere that the 307 hatchback is only a few inches shorter then a Honda CRV. The center of gravity is just way to high, so thats why Peugeot sport opted for the Coupe Cabroilet (sp?)

 First thought that came to my mind. I kinda like the rear half of it, but not the the front end though. It's too sloped like a new Civic Si or the older cab-forward Dodge/Chrysler products IMHO.

Size change is due to rules changes which set a minimum body weight. Instead of using a smaller car with added weight, they have decided to use a longer car.
Seems the rules may be turning back in Subaru's favor again.

I like it.
Hopefully, the 'all new' nature of the car will entail a long learning curve, which will allow Subaru to climb back up to the top of the pack for a while. :D

4 door??? The 206 is a 2 door.
I don't know if I like it or not. I'm still more partial to a hatchback.

Cool from the front, but it can't match the devilishly good looks of the 206 WRC.

It's not bad looking, but it's definitely a touring car, not a WRC car. They will be losing many many rear bumpers during their races. And they still need to put a nice IC in the front end as well, it seems.

Interestingly enough...Richard Burns won't need to learn how to drive the new 307. He has signed with Subaru!!!! Check wrc.com for details:banana:

My guess is also that the coupe is better aerodynamically than the hatchback. With the traditional 3-box car design the rear deck acts as somewhat of a spoiler, helping to provide more downforce. Also a sloped rear windshield is better aero-wise than a steep one.
And, out on a limb, maybe switching to a coupe layout will lower the CG a bit, not having the extra wieght of the hatch and its necesary structure, and not having the larger rear (side) windows may have positive effects.

Gronholm: The 307 is fast and good
Reigning world champion Marcus Gronholm says he is 'pleased and excited' by Peugeot's new 307WRC after testing the car in southern France earlier this week.
Gronholm drove the new car at Chateau Lastours and thinks the new car is already as fast as the current 206 model.
"The 307 is fast and it is good," Gronholm told Austosport magazine. "It does feel bigger [than the 206] but I hope that as we make the settings better that will be less of an issue. However, it is already good."
The car features an all-new five speed transverse gearbox, which Gronholm says his engineers have yet to master.
"We still have a lot of work to do on the transmission set-up, but the other pieces are staying together very well," he explained. "But already it feels fast."
Gronholm's team-mates for next season are expected to be announced soon, with Freddy Loix, Daniel Carlsson and Cedric Robert all in the mix for a possible drive. Current Peugeot stalwart Harri Rovanpera is also in the frame. However, it now seems unlikely that Peugeot will pick up either of Citroen's established drivers Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae.
