Race of Champions on SPEED!
Got this on an e-mail today from Speed Channel.
This Sunday, December 12 at 8 p.m. ET (10 p.m. PT), SPEED Channel presents the Race of Champions as racing stars Michael Shumacher, Jimmie Johnson, Colin McRae, and many more, take to the track for the title of Champion of Champions.

The Race of Champions was originally conceived as the ultimate shoot-out between the best international rally stars. It remains the only event to allow drivers to race head-to-head heats in exactly the same cars and on a parallel-track. The premise is simple: using identical equipment and track, drivers can prove themselves based on their talent alone.

The Race of Champions, this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET (10 p.m. PT) on SPEED Channel. Don't miss it!

Sweet, I'll definitely have to catch that. Pardon me for being behind the times (been at sea the past few weeks), but has the ROC already happened? I'm assuming Speed is showing some tape-delayed stuff.

I believe it was held last weekend, and available live (in the US) only on HD. I would verify this, but don't want to accidentally see the results. =)
Scooby Freak 12-11-2004 12:44 PM

srf is correct. Don't look in the latest autoweek till after you watched it. But they had a good article about it.
psyber_0ptix 12-11-2004 01:10 PM

dude, i saw it on hdnet, its frickin awsome....

defiantely tivo this
Patrick L 12-11-2004 01:55 PM

Not everyone has HDnet or can aford it.

Michele Mouton puts on a hell of a party.

I was there. It was on Saturday, the 4th. Quite the event, and I'll be curious to see how Speed presents it.

Bah. I thought the coverage was total crap. The Canary Islands version of the race last year's coverage was much better... and I am assuming it was because the Americans won.

Geeze... that was pitiful coverage. I think I only saw 4 total races. Terrible.

yea, this wasnt as comprehensive as the other showing... :\

its funny how that 23 year old kept beating world champions.

although the 10 second penalty is pretty steep. without that he would have lost .

although in rally, its more based on times and not what you hit :\

ah well, it was good for charity and good sport between drivers. much fun in either case
srf 12-12-2004 10:52 PM

10 seconds seems excessive. Overall, I was let down by the event...

That kid was awesome!
Remember too- without that 10 second penalty Massa would have beaten Schumacher and Kanaan would have beaten Loeb. Pretty cool!
However- I agree, the coverage seems ... well, Less Than Optimal, shall we say?

And why is the whole thing on tarmac fer chrissakes?!?

Because Schumacher is there.
Scooby Freak 12-13-2004 07:08 AM

Did anyone notice that the peugot & citroen were both referred to as 'the rally car.' The ferrari was 'the ferrari', but the two rally cars weren't differenciated much.
pezman04wrx 12-13-2004 07:13 AM

Have to agree that the coverage was damn bad ... They only showed a couple of the full four lap races, and they were at the end of the program ... Granted they were the important races, but what about the rest of them ... Also have to agree that the 10 second penalty was pretty rediculous ... I mean really, 10 seconds for hitting the sides  ... Most cases of touching the sides only hurt you, so why penalize for it ... Oh well, overall just disapointed in the program ...
akuhner 12-13-2004 09:25 AM

what a snooze... too bad they'll stick with that format since so many people paid to sit in that stadium.
thetikler1 12-13-2004 09:58 AM

hell i'd pay to sit in that stadium and watch but i must admit the coverage was crappy.
Rodan 12-13-2004 10:01 AM

I think the format sucks. Just as bad as IROC. They ought to have one oval race, one open wheel road race, and one rally event.
Scooby Freak 12-13-2004 10:08 AM

The 10 second penalty isn't that ridiculous. If it was a 2 second penalty the results would be the same. If there was no penalty for hitting the walls, the results would change, but so would their attitude about hitting the walls. Someone would of destroyed the wall & delayed the event.
KoneKiller 12-13-2004 10:57 AM

it seemed rather boring to me <shrug>

runoffs with the spec racer fords was much better :)
gtguy 12-13-2004 10:59 AM

Live, it was MUCH better than the Speed coverage, which unfortunately, didn't do the event justice.

I thought it was a joke. Massa and Kannan got the high hard one and the penatly system was too harsh. What were the Ferraris doing on a track that small? It didn't make any sense to have cars that big on a track that narrow.

In person, it worked. They put the chicane at the little yump to slow the Ferraris down for the straight, but the cars had plenty of room. The 360 Modena isn't all that wide, like a Diablo or something.

Kevin
artkevin 12-13-2004 05:48 PM

I wish I could have been there.
Compared to the buggies and rally cars the modenas just seemed out of place. The rally cars looked tosable but the Ferraris seem to need more space like on a "real" race track. Its is cool that there was another disapline but it looked as though the car did not fit the race. All this is coming from a guy that got to see the 1 1/2 hr sub par coverage on Speed.

I agree, I think the whole event was marred by political motives causing ridiculous penalties and mysterious, highly suspect alternator problems for Heikki the giant killer when his Ferrari just happened to be on the starting grid of the nation's cup final race against Alesi.

Did you guys see Mouton's face after Schumacher lost to Massa, and after Kanaan spanked Loeb, it was classic! It was a look of both utter surprise and thinking something must be done to "fix" things!

I'm sure they looked at it like their 2 world champions were eliminated in the first round and with all the people who came to see them, they had to somehow bring them back into the competition. You lose credibility when you do things like that.
Smart_alek 12-14-2004 12:10 AM

Yeah, Mouton and the people around her looked somewhat suprised. I really like the reaction shot of Jean Todt when Kovalilian (sp?) beat Schumacher.
