Race Seat install, any suggestions?

I've decided that my next upgrade will be a race seat. I like the Sparco Evo, and Evo 2000. I'm looking for advice. Where did you buy yours? Would you do anything different? Things to watch out for? I've heard that the earlier seat-rails (from an Impreza "L") might accept the brackets more easily? Thanks for the help/advice.

Thanks. But, I'm not asking for what seat you like, I'm asking for advice on where to buy them, and how to mount them. Experienced only need reply.

Are you doing whatever-point belt upgrade or no?
| dunk | 08-16-2004 03:02 PM |
Allright, that's a momo cup racing seat. It costs 425 dollars and I bought it from LTB motorsports. To mount it in your car you need sidemounts, sliders if you want them, and seat brackets (like those made my wedge)

subesports.com has a great selection of seats, including sparco. racecompengineering.com also has some nice sparco seats, including the sparco prodrives, which are soooo nice (but expensive).sube sports racecomp engineering

Wedge Engineering is a company out in Long Beach, California. AFAIK they don't have a website, but you can call information to get it. I believe they are on cherry ave if that helps.
I'll try to find the # and post it up once I find it.
Oh yeah, I hope you have a dremel tool, cause sometimes the brackets just don't fit right and you may have to grind down a bit.

Don't buy from them for the above reason ;)
If I had a choice, I wouldn't ... but I got all my racing seats used.

If you are getting Sparco seats, then just get the Sparco seatbase. They are of better quality than those wedge Engineering.
However, dont expect perfect fit. Although it will fit into your car without any problem, you may however want to maybe modify it so that its nearer to the centre of the car and that is what I did to mine

Do you have a roll cage? It all depends on that, the upgraded belts have to be used in conjunciton with a full roll cage, because if you roll over (knock on wood) it will hold you upright in your seat, which you could only imagine how bad that would be... the normal seatbelts let you slip under your seat a bit so the car stops collapsing and youll have a better chance...

I'd like to have a full roll-cage someday, but you talk as if it's mandatory with harnesses. I've got a Speedware harness bar, it's fine for now, and better than hooking them in the back seat. The question, was for advice about race-seat installation.

We offer a full line of Sparco, Bell, OMP, Alpine Stars, and Longacre. We have found the Sparco seat rails fit very well.

Actually, if you were in a crash youd be better off with the stock belts. Do a search, i couldnt find it but there is a whole thread about this. Just trying to help you out, its your life in the end...

Heres the key quote:
FYI, I'm pretty sure harness are illegal on the street. I bought a set of ghetto 4-points of ebay for like $40 (they're actually not so bad for $40, they're going in my buggy). I put one in my subaru just temporarily until I put it in the buggy. I use it when going to work (like 10 minutes from my house) and its a lot more comfortable than the "real" seatbelt.
But.... (as I've heard in the past) in a roll over accident, without a roll cage you will DIE with a harness on. (someone please correct me if I'm wrong here).
But they will work fine with your seats... make sure you get one that has a single strap in the back, and secure it on the back seat seatbelt mounts. DO NOT run it over your seat and down to the floor, your back will snap in half if you are rear ended!
Anyhow my real point is that the reason you would do a seatbelt install is to increase safety (correct me if I am wrong). Picture this: being held upright in your seat while the roof is coming down vs. sliding down (due to the extendable seatbelt) under the dash a bit providing you with precious crumple room. Just seems to me to be very simple logic, I have no problem with being incorrect, enlighten me, I was about to buy racing seats and harnesses.

As an instructor and racer I have seen 10 or so people die at the track in various ways and positions,.....both of you guys are right. It really depends on how you hit, what you hit and how fast you're going, etc. I have seen people in WRX's barrel roll with alot of energy and the roof is not crushed AT ALL.....I have seen older M3's that literally look like convertibles,.......most of the WRX's I've seen that rolled, the roof height is fine,...the sensitive part of the GB and GD cars is when it starts coming apart the suspension control arms have a habit of piercing thru the floor board of the passenger or driver side fronts. If you pay attention to all the Prodrive rally cars since 1997, they all have a 12 layer Carbon fibre foot area shield that serves many purposes, one being to prevent this from happening.
The seat belt, and driving harness issue will always be a coin toss. I had a good friend on a back road hit a tree at an estimated 90 mph, the only reason he is alive is because of a Sabelt harness, and the fact that is was drilled thru a thick part of the rear deck in his car, other wise the seat belt anchors were already compromised in the impact. So it really depends on how, what and where you hit, roll , or what ever.
Yes in theory, the harness and racing seat , if your roof collapses, could be the end of you, but if that roof doesnt, then it could save you. If you have a cage, it complicates things even further do to , again, where, how, and what you hit, roll, or what ever.
One thing is for certain, we all know that racing and track days are a calculated risk, and lets appreciate anyone who makes an effort to shine some light on ones plans for safety, taking into account that, we are all racers at heart and want everyone to be safe and avoid the bad times.

I still have the stock belts also. In STS I can use aftermarket harnesses, but have to retain the stock ones, AND my Sparco harnesses are not DOT approved.
944 Turbo guy, thanks. Do the sparco mounts mate with the factory seat rails on my 2000 RS? My class rules state that the seat cannot be in a fixed position, so I need to mount to my rails.

dude, I wish, as when I had a 2.5 RS, I sat in the sunroof half the time, and with a helmet it was pitiful.....No the Sparco seat brackets and rails fit well with the Sparco seats. We are working with a fabricator to make seat brackets to sit lower in the GC8, and New Age cars.

Hey Miles,
How much lower do the Sparco brackets and rails sit compared to stock? (STi)
I want to keep my factory seats, but was thinking about fabbing up a bracket to mount them to the sparco rails in hopes of lowering them an inch or so...
So you sell the brackets and rails by themselves?
thanks!

So with a set of Evo seats and the side brackets picked up from E-bay. What parts are necessary to install in the STi? A slider and Subaru 01-03 bracket?
| Grintch | 09-02-2004 09:59 AM |
Which brackets did SCC use in the flat black STi? They said they can barely see over the hood (much lower than stock). This would be good for my "tall guy doesn't fit with helmet" problem.
