To All:
I am writing to let you know that because of insufficient
number of entries we have no choice but to cancel
the International Rally New York 2006.
Thank you for your support and I will be in touch
with you in the future.
I can be reached at the telephone number below if you
have questions.
With best regards,
Ivan Orisek

There were only 14 entries as of 9.7.06 Too bad. I hope some fresh leadership can be injected into this event so it can be brought back to life...
See you all @ Black River Stages

That sucks. I wish rallying wasn't so damned tough to get into, I would have loved to participate. Sadly, I'm broke, and have a hard enough time affording autoX. :( I hope it's back next year.

Yeah, there was more to that story...
See you all @ Black River Stages
Fascinating! A certain segment of the rally community boycotted BRS a few years ago and killed the event. I was the registrar and we were testing out my wife's registration and scoring management software, so we were pretty pissed off about how petty it was, nevermind the financial and emotional cost to the actual organizers.
At that time, Rally New York was "in favor". So what's changed?

Oh, geez, just go to Specialstage.com and search Rally New York and look for the threads from last April. I could try to summarize, but really, you don't have the time.

IRNY...
If you know what that means you probably know the reason.
Scheduling it the same weekend as Colorado Cog didn't help any.

I found out about this a few days ago from a stage commander... needless to say I was disappointed because the spring rally was my first time at a rally event, and the first time working.
Now I skimmed over a few of the articles on SS.com, and I will agree that the organization is a little disfunctional and that there was a definate lack of volunteers. I remember working at the finish control on one of the stages by myself... it's very hectic trying to record, time, and send cars off by yourself. One thing I will say is that for the rally teams to get pissed off and vent at the volunteers is not good... I know Ivan started out the weekend kind of on the wrong note, which discourages drivers to come to the next event, but then in turn to pass that anger and frustration onto the workers makes them not want to return either.
Maybe I just don't have enough experience or don't know all the history behind Rally NY, but I think instead of blaming the organization and criticizing them on everything they did wrong, we need to help out and try to help out with the organization of the event. I read about a lot of people saying how it could be better, well let's make it better and see that it comes back next year with drivers eager to race. Let's publicize it so that we get volunteers to come so the event goes more smoothly.
Just my .02
I could try to summarize, but really, you don't have the time.
It short, the low turnout this month was due to RNY's history of below standard quality assurance, quality control, and leadership. And most importantly, a lack of 'tuning into' and responding to constructive feedback from the people who pay to race it.
Albeit a very well intended rally, with the support of many, its demise, IMO, stems from not what the organizers are doing, but rather how they are doing it.
No event or company is with out opportunities of improvement, success comes to those organizations who quickly realize and react accordingly. I attended in 2005 and Spring 2006, had a great time, and would run it again, but opportunities of improvement were quite clear.
Out of all the rallies to choose from w/in 500 miles of NYC, RNY seems to be 'the weakest link'.

No, it has nothing to do with Nicky's observation.
It has to do with competitors electing not to attend an event which the competitors felt did not live up to required safety standards, and whose organizer was perceived as being unwilling to listen to suggestions for changes and improvements.

the thing to realize is that the competitors DID try to work with organizers to make it better. sure, some of the feedback (esp online) was kind of critical in a non-constructive sort of way. But the majority of RNY racers really tried to get the organizers to address safety and support issues to make the event run smoother and more safely. This was simply not done in a way that worked for the racers, and from what I've seen and read about it, neither did it work out well for local residents. None of these problems are un-fixable, they just weren't handled in a way that worked.
support for RNY organizers, local businesses and rally fans?? How about doing the event 5 times, spending upwards of $20k of our own $$$ on racing there? (multiply this number by 30-50 teams over 5 events and you see that $$ should not have been the issue) The event started out a little sketchy, got better for a couple of years (there were a couple of super-fun and fantastic races) , then dived downhill fast. Competitors bailed because they came to feel that the event was not being run safely and that they were being treated in an antagonistic way by some organizers.

If there really was a genuine safety problem, then it's probably better that it be cancelled like this.

Afraid not. I just went over to SpecialStage and read those threads Christian posted. Daphne still follows it quite a bit and I count on her to keep me current.

It's a line from my favorite episode of the Simpsons, "Bart on the Road."
Bart tells his parents that he's going to "The National Grammar Rodeo in Canada." Lisa objects that she's never heard of such a competition. And Bart says, "Maybe because you are, as we say in Latin, a 'dorkus malorkus'."
It also has Andy Williams, an Al Gore doll, a cracker factory, and the Sun Sphere.

Wasn't this the rally that was trying to become a WRC round?
| bjorn240 | 09-12-2006 05:22 PM |
No, this was the gravel version. It was the spring tarmac version that was supposed to be a WRC round. (I'll neglect any mention of what an enormously far-fetched idea this was from the get-go.)
