Took me a second to get my bearings. Imagine you are standing on the passenger side, front wheel well looking into the engine compartment (hood is up, duh...) and the intercooler is the thing at the top, and the "piece de resistance" we are looking at is a shiny fancy turbo heat shield. This stock POS is typically hacked and thrown away as it rarely fits aftermarket downpipes and/or turbos.

Thanks...I thought it might be something around the intercooler. Alas I would go look at mine....except I don't have a turbo.:( :D
It makes sense though now I know what I am looking at.

How much for one of those? My downpipe is trimmed, but I'd like one that's easier to remove.

Will fit on any turbo / downpipe with no modification?

Will fit on any IHI turbo. Don't know about other turbo's.
As long as it clears the wastegate, it should fit. Also, must reuse stock IC mount. This heatshield uses the stock heatshield mount bolt location.

The heat shield will still benefit you even with a FMIC - keeps heat out of the engine bay and ensures longevity of the rubber hoses. + Bling factor.

UBERU: Chimney. 2-3 weeks hopefully. I'll know soon.
MAD REX Re: FMIC, sorry, can't go half. Contact me via PM or at my email: [emailprotected] and we can talk about your situation without a mounting location.

Chimney Prototype in my car!

Hey everyone, the long awaited chimney is here. Check out the photos and let me know what you think. Note: Grating will be different on production. The cuts will be done laser instead of this sloppy plasma cut.
I just installed it. It doesn't rattle and it fits nicely. The production version promises to be a lot cleaner and won't be welded like this one. Also, this one has some air gaps on the chimney walls due to fitting it in my car - the production version again will have clean lines.
So, next step is back to the shop and figure out our final CAD drawings and then we are off to production. I won't have pricing or an ETA for a while, so hang in there. I'd really just like to get feedback from everyone to see if its something of interest in the marketplace.

Sorry, no guestimates as of now.
| CirrusWRX | 08-25-2003 01:14 PM |
Here's a quick question, and sorry if I missed it earlier: where does the air go? It looks like a chimney for the turbo, correct? So if it's sitting next to the IC, does the hot air rise and then FURTHER heat the IC? (I'm sure I'm wrong on this, hence why I was looking for clarification!) Is there some sort of hood modification necessary that will funnel air down to this thing? (ie. another scoop of some sort?)
thanks!
thanks!
| supermarkus | 08-25-2003 01:23 PM |
Cirrus, run out and look down your hood scoop right now and you'll see there's everything you need to run that chimney except for the chimney itself. If you hood scoop ducting is intact, air can't get into the IC core unless it goes through the hood scoop or rises through the core. It's pretty well sealed off.
It looks like it'll work well with stock IC ducting, but if you run an STi IC with the associated ducting, you're SOL. I'm assuming an STi model is in the works too right?

If we had an STI, we could do it, but without one, we can't fit it right. Would need a car for couple of days for fitment and all.

Yeah, for me personally, I'd think it would take at least a month to get it right.... Course it would need to be tested for real world rattles on some good CA fire roads to make extra sure no bouncing or clangin' on that STI.... hehe
No, but seriously, we would need a local So Cal STI in order to make one though. And I think the market would be slightly less than the regular WRX market. Just slightly...:D

Jeremy, the pictures of the chimney version don't seem to be working. Could you try to post them again or possibly email them? Also, any chance you could make the shield a bit bigger like this:

pics work for me
| speedmonkee | 08-26-2003 10:59 AM |
idealrides: Try closing your browser and reopening it. Pics seem to be fine for everyone else.
Also, your shield design can be done, but the side where it drops down to surround the turbo would be difficult to make and would drive up the costs like crazy.
Drop me a line and maybe could do a one off for you - but it would be costly.

OK the pictures work fine now, I think imagestation was down for a little while.
The chimney design looks good, please let us know when it will be available, I'd like to reserve one. Thanks.
