Rear view camera w/screen on A-pillar pod part 1

The_Triton 07-18-2003 08:18 AM

Rear view camera w/screen on A-pillar pod
OK, here is what I want to do.

I would like to be able to have some sort of small video lense and place it on the rear of the car. Then I would like to find a monitor that would fit in an Apillar pod.

I'm not that knowledgabe about different cameras or the small monitors. So...........ask on NASIOC.

What I need to know:
1. What type of camera
2. What type of monitor
3. Is there any other hardware needed to implement this
4. Where to draw the power from

I figure that I could mount the camera on the underskirt or around the license plate. Then run the wires under the carpet from the trunk up to the A pillar.

I always try to be aware of the traffic behind me. In case I have to avoid something in front of me I want to know what the traffic is all around. Plus................I think it would be

I think that it will be extremely hard to find a monitor that small. Is there a reason you want one so small?
The_Triton 07-18-2003 10:23 AM

well, I'm not sure where else to put one. I don't want the BlingBling stereo system with the LCD screen. I'm not sure of what my options are. Just thought that a small screen on the Apillar would be functional.
pico 07-21-2003 07:39 PM

I saw one in hong kong has built in lcd/mon inside the rear mirror with camera that you can attched at the end of your car. That was at least 3 years ago, I can ask my friend if you are serious about it.
jaypride 07-21-2003 07:46 PM

You could put a screen in the visor for it. (If your open to suggestions)
skivvie 07-21-2003 08:26 PM

See if you can find a busted video camera with a still working LCD screen. Some of them are TINY. You'd have to do a good bit of electronics snooping to get stright video to it though...
vile 07-22-2003 11:17 AM

this is actually a pretty cool idea......for the small camera, i would think any shop that sells like home protection, self protection, spy gear will have the camera

as for the monitor, i dunno, but definitely pretty cool none the less
The_Triton 07-22-2003 01:09 PM

Well, if not the Apillar for the monitor where else would be a good location?

Hmmm, maybe the flip up LCD monitor from a vid camera would fit somewhere. Just modify the dash to where the screen could be flipped down flush with the dash when not in use.

just thinking outloud
HiFiWRX 07-22-2003 01:29 PM

You could use a rear view mirror mounted monitor, there are tons of those out there... Usually where you find them you can find the camera...

Like this NSX for instance...

Here is what a simple MSN search turned up

Good luck! And post pics when your done with it!

I was wondering what people would use something this small for: link
soso3 07-22-2003 03:44 PM

Yuck! What's with the spoiler? He'd better be using that thing at the track:mad:   (I'm referring to the red NSX)

That's a start. I wonder how you get the video feed to that one.

HiFiWRX - thnx 4 the link. Those are some high prices on those mirror units!!!

My little fetish is to remove the thing on the dash where the clock/gauge pack would go, and put a motorized LCD screen that pops up when you push a button, and closes flush with the dash when you push it again. I think that would take tons of work, though.

call and ask vivid racing. I know they had something like that on both of their cars.... but its not cheap.

i used to work at a stereo shop and i molded 3 of these on each a pillar. they all connected to a video swich and played dvds, games, or the rear camera.

use this camera. its a color waterproof ccd camera. we used to install these in cars a few times a week. they work great.

The JDM WRX's had a navigation option that offered this. I don't believe it was/is motorized, but spring loaded with a screen in the top. Some guys were working on getting the housings made over here, but I don't think it ever came through. Wish I still had the thread, but I'm sure a search could bring it to life. I think it was wiredWRX who was working on it.

I am imagining this in the center dash location where the stock clock is... Hmmmm keep the Nice oem cover with the clock to make it look 100% OEM then it pops up... WOW if I didn't just spend so damn much on the Alpine IVA-D900 I would get this thing in a minute!!

 Your idea would be a SNAP with this unit!

[edit] here is the location of this unit... http://www.accele.com Accele is a company that many car audio shops use for raw monitors to do custom installs, their quality is good for their price and they are very reliable.

Just looked again and saw that they have a full line of "CCD Cameras" as well as a "1.8 LCD Module" and a "2.5 LCD Module" either of which would probably work in the A-Pillar pod I would assume (with some custom fitting of coarse)... Check them out either way...
Dr Ken 07-24-2003 03:32 PM

What about blue-toothing your video to a PDA. The PDA could also act as navitation aid (GPS). You could even keep an eye on things remotely (like, in your house), as well. Just a idea. My guess is those fancy big RVs use video-camera-stuff like you're describing, tha'd be where I'd start looking, but you'd prolly need to find a real geek to help wire in a tiny monitor.
Vision 07-24-2003 06:54 PM

Anyone have any other suggestions for the camera in addition to the above posts ?. I already have a 7" lcd in dash that I'd like to hook a small color camera too...
sleptoor 07-24-2003 11:51 PM

If your doing it on the Cheap check here for
LCDs and Cameras

you could dismantle the LCD so it could fit where ever you like.

3in wide that could fit on/in your a pillar.
