Reason number 14eleventybillion to work on your own stuff. part 1

Reason number 14eleventybillion to work on your own stuff.
I had a little chip in my window last week so I was going to get it fixed the next day. Well, I woke up the next day to a 10" crack. So I call State Farm and my deductible is only $100 so they got a glass company to come replace it. $100, no biggie.

Jack the Ripper shows up today to do the installation and he's a little rough looking but what do you expect. He finishes it up and I go out to look at it and yep...that looks like a windshield. Here's your $100 for my deductible and I'll see you later.

2 hours later I go out to my car to go to lunch and notice a big ass dent in my fender. Right where your knee would be if you are replacing a windshield.

I understand that accidents happen but if you do this for a living you'd think you would watch out for things like this. If it does happen you'd think you would own up to while you are there instead of just bailing out of there like nothing happened.

Insurance company is going to contact the glass company to get it straightened out so hopefully it will end well.

Cliff Notes: Idiot replacing my windshield put a big ass dent in my fender and didn't say a word about it. This is why I like to work on my own car because generally, people are stupid.
105wrx 03-09-2007 02:23 PM

ya but replacing glass would be a little tough for you to do yourself, espicially if you have never done it before... still sucks tho..
russd32 03-09-2007 02:26 PM

^ That's the reason I had someone else do it. I've never installed a windshield and I don't plan on it. Plus insurance covered it.

But it seems like every time someone touches my car there is a 50/50 chance that they will screw something up. (i.e. If you've ever been to a Quickee Loob joint there is a 99% chance that you'll have oily paw prints on your key's, steering wheel, shifter, hood, and fenders. It's like they bathe in the ****.)
Mechie3 03-09-2007 03:03 PM

That's why you should always always change your own oil. Even if it's fricken freezing outside I change my own oil.
PeteDucati 03-09-2007 04:42 PM

I wouldn't place toomuch blame on that glass guy. It's Subaru's fault for making the fenders out of aluminum foil.

You're an ass hat for not warning the guy.. these fenders are NOT like the typical fender - only we know how easy it is to dent - and I warn anyone who's going to be working on the car.
Aaron'z 2.5RS 03-09-2007 04:59 PM

You'll be lucky if the windshield frame doesn't rust out... it depends on if the guy gouged the crap out of the frame or not with the razor...

I got a Chevy Astro that almost the whole windshield frame is rusting out form a (crappy) replcement windshield....

Did you get factory glass?? You may possibly have crappy glass to.... I was windshield shopping once and i called 5 places, all but one were shistey Btards, the 5th told me many things to watch out for, as far as replacement,,, the big ones i mentioned
Aaron'z 2.5RS 03-09-2007 05:00 PM

oh yeah, poopy on the dent....
stentorian 03-09-2007 05:23 PM

I've seen a guy drop a tool on someones hood while replacing their windshield, didn't say anything...and yup left a dent.

Sucks dude, hopefully the insurance company will work something out with the glass company to get the dent fixed. Good Luck!!;)

I'll bet fatty didn't even realize he dented the fender. I didn't realize I was denting my own (5'10" 155lbs) while goofing with the turbo/intercooler until I noticed a bunch of tiny dimples where I was leaning.

Did anyone else read how Subaru has decided to stop using aluminum hoods due to transport damage, etc?
LastResort 03-09-2007 09:25 PM

They stopped using aluminum, because it was expensive.
vipernj 03-09-2007 09:32 PM

damn bro.. hes probably not gonna confess too it, but hopefully insurance will take care of it
Magnum626 03-09-2007 09:52 PM

Wait so the new cars don't have aluminum hoods? How bout the fenders? And what if we want a replacement?

I still say the installer should've notified the owner that is if he even noticed it. Many folks have dinged/dented their fenders without knowing.
russd32 03-12-2007 11:53 AM

I talked to the glass company and they do quite a bit of work for my favorite body shop. The guys says he didn't know he did it but he told me to take it somewhere and have it fixed. I scheduled an appointment with my bodyshop and they are going to bill it to the glass company. Body guys says he can pop it back out without painting because it didn't crease and it's in a good spot, so that is cool.
WRXDriftR 03-12-2007 12:03 PM

i brought my car to an RS Strauss Auto to have a plug put in the tire where I found a nail. The freakin guy left oily fingerprints all over my windows because he HAD to lean against them to kick the lift arms into position
he couldnt even speak english, i feel so dumb

Sorry, but you should have to tell anyone working on your car not to dent it. Even if he did do it, he should have said something

what? i dont think he is an asshat for not saying..... oh watch my fenders when you work on my windshield, he is an asshat for not paying attention to what he is doing...... he should have at least told the owner

Yeah it's subaru's part for making parts of aluminum so the car can shed some lbs on a performance car...shame one them:rolleyes:

Maybe I'm naive, but I really don't see why you should have to tell someone who's working on your car not to dent it, regardless of weakness, there's something off when someone's being rough enough with your car to dent it like that. If one has to start requesting to make sure damage isn't done to their car when work is being done on it, what's next? Asking your server at a restaurant to ensure that the food isn't raw so you don't get a disease?
russd32 03-12-2007 04:01 PM

I ignored Duche'bagPete's comment earlier because he's obviously just trying to stir the pot by calling me a tard and he has nothing to contribute. Unfortunately there are a large amount of idiots like him on the internet.

It's pretty obvious that you shouldn't have to ask someone to not damage your car when they are doing a job that they do everyday. That's like asking the grocery bagger to not break your eggs. He should know that they are fragile and he shouldn't maul them while bagging your stuff. Pete, you are a retard, find something better to do.

Factory subaru OEM glass is about the worst stuff available, much like subaru paint and subaru body panels. I had numerous chips after only owning my car a month, and ended up replacing the glass after 3 months or so. The aftermarket glass came to $250 INSTALLED with no insurance ($500 ded), and has survived numerous rock hits without a single chip.
Force 03-12-2007 04:51 PM

Do you have any pics of the dent?
I'm just curious how bad it is....

Sucks man :(
russd32 03-12-2007 05:20 PM

No, I haven't taken any pictures. It's big but it's not that bad. It's pushed in but it didn't crease so I'm 95% sure I could pop it out myself but I figure I'll just let the body shop pop it out in case it does need painting. It dented in the rear of the fender where it bulges out and it's about the size of my hand.

BTW, my glass was $743 installed. My windshield has the heated lower half, that's why it costs so much.
MTX05STI 03-13-2007 05:08 PM

Yes, I had a dealership in IL replace mine, it creaks all the time but I guess it's better than a dent in my fender and me in jail for finding that moron and beating him unmercifully.
PeteDucati 03-14-2007 04:46 AM

Listen, not trying to stir a pot of anything. I've been around cars and worked in the field/industry since the early 90's. When you're used to metal body panels you're only concern becomes scratches, i.e., fender covers. It's common for three guys from a garage to "push" a car into the shop when it's DOA - try doing that now with these thinner body parts designed to shed ~50lbs?!? Some cars use thinner metal and some use aluminum, it's a fairly new process and one that you don't realize until you use your knee to brace yourself or something stupid like that and dent a car (or in my case, my own car). It's NEVER been something we've had to worry about. I make sure I tell people who are about to do heavy work (pull my motor or trans) to be careful of the aluminum foil body - and they are. The fenders are so soft you don't "feel" them denting.
russd32 03-20-2007 05:07 PM

Update: I took the car to the b-shop today and he pushed the dent out. It isn't very noticeable but there is a slight wrinkle in the fender that wouldn't come out.

I went ahead and made an appointment to have it repaired and repainted. It's not very noticeable but it's on the glass shop's dime so I figure that I might was well get it done right.
The_Black_WRX 03-20-2007 09:56 PM

Dont go to the SafeLite in Rosedale MD
I am glad this happened to my work truck and not my car.
So its cold out so I take my truck to their shop to have the windshield replaced. When I come out there is black goop all over the roof and on the fender, and all over the headliner and a-pillar. I go in and tell them and they say " our techs are more carful than that, we didn't get anything any where.
If we did it would still be wet" So I go outside and get a glob of it in my hands and show the manager he says " thats not wet" and when I wiped it on his desk his toned changed. He started going on and on about how it wasn't their fault and blah blah blah, so I did the right thing called the BBB
and cleaned it off my self. Had this been my car I would have gone ape **** on them and I would have a new paint job and a new headliner and new a-pillar.

Steve

CN: went to glass shop , shop got goo all over the place and said they didn't
get it anywhere
IIdiceII 03-21-2007 12:25 AM

thats why i take pictures of EVERYTHING with a time stamp before i bring my car somewhere...interior, major exterior panels etc....makes things a lot easier.
