red and clear taillight install

Okay let me first say that I did a search and couldnt find what i was looking for. I looked in the mods section and went to ravensblade and scoobymods and didnt seem to find the info. I just got my red and clear tails from isr and i need to find out how to install them. I removed the carpeting from the trunk and took off the 5 nuts from the back of the light and unplugged the light. They were still firmly in place, i noticed 3 screw holes on the bottom of my new lights, how do i get to them to take the old ones off, do i need to remove the bumper. Help would really be appreciated.

Use a hairdryer and heat the behjeezus out of the backs of the lights. This will warm and soften the adhesive, and you may pull them out.

Bumper removal is not required.

Yeah, just warm the lights for like a good 5 minutes and pull them out without getting the gunk on your car. If you do get some stuff on your car try some Goo Gone, you'll wanna marry it after u see what it does.

The 3 Screw holes on the bottom of the Red/Clear lights are for the metal plates that are attached to your stock lights.

You'll know what I'm talking about once you take off your stock lights. Simply unscrew the plates from the stock ones and screw them on your new one.

Make sure you use a good replacement of adhesive. :D

I used 3M Strip calk -- part # 051135-08578

You can get it at any auto parts store.. If you can't find that.. just use a silicon goo. :D
dRu888 04-16-2002 03:49 PM

yea ^ use the **** stuff =)

thats what I used, 3M window sealant at Kragen...easy to apply and does a good job

I used the silcoine sealant. It worked great no leaks in the three years since I changed my taillights.

Dammit Andres! You beat to it.

But it's a pain to remove them after being siliconed in.

My only advice (since I installed my replacement after some numbnut broke mine last week, and just had a leaky trunk after rain) is to use A LOT of sealant. I mean a lot. Use the whole friggin tube if you have to, but don't be bashful. If you don't, they'll leak. Good rule of thumb: If you have to ask yourself, "Is that good enough?", the answer is always NO. ;) They'll come out again if you have to get them out.

Thead 12-01-2002 10:27 PM

probably a dumb idea, but would something like liquid nails work as a sealant?
Silverscooby27 12-02-2002 04:17 PM

Use the 3M window sealant, and use a lot of it. Don't be stingy or you'll be sorry (like I am) ;)
RallyOttawa 01-16-2003 01:03 AM

help me

this was the post I've been looking for... here's a question.. where do you need to put the heat? On the outside of the car.. or heat up the lights from the inside. I've never seen inside the lights, so I dont know where best to get at the "goo".

Thanks so much!!
DangeRS 01-16-2003 10:09 AM

how did you make the light totally red? with a spray tint? because the red looks good because its all one color

you cant do it, cuz then i wont be different :p

and yes it is spray tint...but mine also has a BRP "brow" on it...:p

you dont really need heat....i didnt heat it up...just pushed really hard, and tried to not bend the screws..
RallyOttawa 01-19-2003 02:41 AM

Well... after two trips to the autoparts store for new sealant... I did er today!

I tried the 3M Windo-Weld... but the tube broke, so I bought the automotive all-purpose silicone sealant... and it worked pretty darn well. I just hope I put enough on... but I think it should be good. I sure used more than what was on there already.

Now I know why my trunk was leaking....
