red dome lights

anybody know a place to order a red dome light for the wrx? no local places carry the correct size. :alien:

ps: no, i won't do a search
DrBoy01 07-06-2002 11:59 PM

Yeah, I saw some for sale on Ebay. Just run a search there, you lazy bastard :D
MagicMT 07-07-2002 01:21 AM

Why would you want a red dome light?
SAW 07-07-2002 12:29 PM

A friend of mine has one in his Maxima.

I just don't get it...
angus 07-07-2002 12:33 PM

notice that when someone turns your interior light on while you're driving at night, it's annoying and you can't see the road very well? this doesn't happen with a red light. red doesn't dilate your pupils much. truckers have used them forever, and some high-end cars now come with a red/white interior light.

it's great for reading directions, checking maps, finding a dropped roach, paying/watching the hooker...

2 words: bulb condoms

I picked up mine at Autozone.
willguidry 07-07-2002 09:26 PM

Angus,

I second the notion regarding the bulb condoms at autozone. I wanted to know what the hubbubb was, so I just went. Picked up red condoms for 1.99 a pair. They also had blue and green, but for only the simple sake of my passengers reading or map navigation at night, I got the red.

Bout two seconds of install time, and damn, they work well...and look great!

I put them on my map light bulbs. Rather then my dome light. I didn't want my car to have the "Ghetto/Ricer" look to it. So noone knows I have the red lamps until at night, and someone goes to turn on the reading lights. It doesn't bother me in the least...such a soft glow. My GF read the 'paper all the way home tonight, and I never noticed that the light was on. I could see through the rearview, to each side, and most importantly through the windshield.

Not to mention it looks VERY shiek.

WELL worth the two bucks.

I suggest everyone get these.

Cheers

red lights do work indeed. The military, especially the Navy, has been using them for many years to avoid being seen. Many field operators also have a red lense to go over their lights so they can read maps at night without giving away their location. Good idea on bringing it into the car!

my experience w/red dome lights wasn't great. it looked cool for a while, but then it got old.. and annoying.

first, trying to read anything under the red light doesn't work because it isn't bright enouh

second, you can barely see anything

and they were sorta scary at night.. you feel all devilish :)

dru18,

Thats why I said to put them in your MAP lights. Not your dome light. :P

Stay tuned for pics. It's 6pm EST.

No signs of darkness yet. :)

red lights

Okay, this is totally just FYI. The Navy/Coast Guard uses red lights so that the crew doesn't ruin their night vision. If a lookout were to go on duty at night, from a white light room to the open ocean dark sky world he would be of no use for maybe 30 or so minutes. By utilizing red lights, the eyes adjust to the dark faster. This way the safety of the ship is increased and there is quicker watch transition. As stated earlier, red lights make it easier for our eyes to adjust to the dark, as opposed to white lights which really mess them up in transition. It's not always for a "covert" condition, it's more for safety.

Furthermore, half my work is done under red light conditions and I don't find reading in it at all hard or annoying. Maybe you just need to adjust the intesity of your red light. With the right red light, the only problem I encounter is figuring out what color something really is.

Unfortunately,

None of the pics I took from my digi cam came out.

All the red light pics in the dark with no flash came out WAYYYY too dark, couldn't see jack.

And when I used the flash, you couldn't see the red lights.

Soooo. Go to autozone, I saw them also at walmart today, and spend the 1.99. They are worth it, and if you don't like them, take em off.

If you are going to put them in your map lights, and save yourself from the "ricer" comments like you'd get if you put them in your domes :p you'll need the tube type ones. If you on putting them in your dome lights, you'll need the bulb type covering.

Well said CoastGuardWRX, you must work on the Groton subbase eh?

Anyhoo, the bulb condoms are made out of thin gel type caps. Almost like a gel cap for medicines, only these don't degrade in water :p

They are thick enough not to melt, but thin enough to not subtract from the brightness of the bulbs. You should have see people I passed last night w/ the light on, and my GF reading the paper. People were turning on their interiors, and were STARING into my car.

I mean, I'm used to that during the day, but at night now? What ever shall I do!

Cheers

and be safe

I use to do night sailing and to read maps we would use a red flash light. That's what I use in the car if I need to read something like a map after driving a while. I'd rather have a white light in the dome. 9 times out of 10 if it's dark out and you are getting in your car you just came from a lit place and your eyes haven't adjusted to the darkness anyway. That's when I want to see in the car. I think a red dome light would look more more at home in a Honda that has a book shelf wing and big exhaust tip. But that's just me.
scaryfastskier 07-08-2002 10:04 PM

I had those in my dome light of my old car. (because I saw one too many helicopter/spy/gun movies) It helped alot for eye adjustment, but the color of on the bulbs would fade really quickly.

Peaty, I agree completely.

That's why I was telling everyone to put them in their map lights.

The dome light color change is rather ricey IMO. But the map lights, noone really ever sees that. Unless of course, you need to read a map or something. Then, people in the car get to experience first hand that it serves an excellent function. And will never say that having red map lights is ricey. :)

Will, This is a very good idea. I'll have to check into the bulb size, I've never messed w/ those bulbs before. The only time my map lights have ever been used was for my passenger reading a map. What a concept :)
willguidry 07-09-2002 12:24 PM

Peaty,

The condoms only come in two sizes. one for a bulb that is tubular in design, (I.E. the map light bulbs in the MY99+ RS)

And smaller regular bulb design condoms. You want the tubular type condoms. All you do, is slide the gel condom over the bulb, and that's it. Put it back in. Done.

All in all, well worth the 1.99.

Cheers

DoinkMobb 07-10-2002 12:09 AM

So I can give the interior of my car a Satan-y red glow and feel like I'm driving with the devil himself? Cool. I have to go buy some red bulb condoms now.
Albert 07-10-2002 01:34 AM

Yea and if you drive thru the seedy part of town at night with a red dome light on it's a signal you're looking for some action.

I'm kiddin'

"RED LIGHT" District ;)
Raslian 07-11-2002 01:46 AM

Wait...I'm confused...where are the dome lights and where are the map lights?
willguidry 07-11-2002 08:11 AM

Dome LIGHT is the light that turns on when you open your doors.

Map light are the two little lights towards the front of the car closest to the windshield on the roof. (inside the car of course)

Cheers
