replace backseats with front seats part 1

replace backseats with front seats
Is it possible, and has it been done before?
silverscoob27 12-06-2004 11:20 AM

sorry to be no help. but yea its been done. I've seen it, maybe not with subaru's but I've seen it done, with all sparco seats. I dont know about the sti but with most cars, they have deep wells where your ass sits underneath the rear seats so I dont know how seat rails get bolted up, call Sparco and ask, they'll know what too do. It can be done, but why would you want to do this. Are you building a show car? It complete waste of perfectly good seating in the back.
v10m5 12-06-2004 11:29 AM

ms3p, to answer your question:

I think that the front seats are much more comfortable than the back seats.

Three people in the back is just silly, unless they are children, which won't be an issue so...it seems obvious that two very comfortable seats would be better than one bench.

I do not know how it would look though, so at the moment I am simply gathering information.
ESEMES 12-06-2004 11:33 AM

it would add about 50-60X the oem rear seat's weight.......

otherwise, id love to see a couple of pics!! (go for it!!)

Are you confusing STi seats with "very comfortable seats"? ;)

USDM STi seats SUCK imo.

Gotcha.
If you do it what are you planning to do with the extra space that will be left in the middle? Some kind of arm rest/ center console? THis is beginning to start interesting. I still wouldn't do it myself but would like to see it. Also I think that the front seats mounted on the back would sit much lower than the rear seat does now. Custom higher mounting brackets?

Huh? Let's just assume the rear seat cushions weigh 10 lbs. Adding 2 Sparco bucket seats won't weigh 500 lbs.
satrya 12-06-2004 01:18 PM

The floor under the rear seats are raised at least about 6 inches with respect to the front seats. Even if you fabricate a low-profile permanent mount to adapt the front seats to the rear, there may be issues with headroom. This is especially true for the GDs (sedans) because of the rear windshield.

I do however recall a rally-prepped Impreza with a 3rd seat on the 2nd row. The seat was rather small, and had to be pushed a bit forward in order to fit. Even then, there doesn't seem to be much room. Iirc, this isn't primarily because of the roll cage, but the rear windshield and the raised platform on the 2nd row.
v10m5 12-06-2004 02:51 PM

When compared to the bench in the back, the STi front seats are beautiful.
Calamity Jesus 12-06-2004 04:20 PM

Just make sure to bolt them directly to the fuel tanks.

Buy a lincoln if you want a nice back seat.
yertle 12-06-2004 04:23 PM

I'd put the front seats in back and get some new fronts =P
aidrock 12-06-2004 04:36 PM

i too believe the headroom issue will be the deciding factor, unless you are brave enough to chop out holes in your floor!!!

Buy a lincoln if I want a nice back seat... Uh OK, I'll go do that shall I? How old are you? 12?

No, if it is too much trouble then I wouldn't pursue it to that extent. I was just wondering if this had been done before. I agree that the headroom would dictate the project. Well, that and bolting the seats properly without too much modification.

 There is no way you could make the rear seats lower then the fronts without liberal use of a sawsall, and removal of your fuel tank.
satrya 12-06-2004 05:46 PM
I was just wondering if this had been done before.
It's too bad I forgot whose project car had this 3rd seat on the 2nd row. From the pictures, the 3rd seat was apparently a rather small racing seat, both in terms of its width and height. The STi front seats are probably about 20% larger than this particular one.

It is possible that this was a project car of one of the Vendors here. The interior was gutted to place some roll cage, and iirc, a small monitor was mounted on the roll cage for the 3rd passenger to monitor something.

Bump. Does anyone else remember / know the car I'm talking about?
v10m5 12-06-2004 06:20 PM

Man, I had a good look at my STi after work and yea...bad idea. The rear seats are so much higher than the front ones that it would take some real custom work to use the STi seats and make them safe. Oh well, I still think it would be trick. Thanks for the input guys.

Throw some Corbeaus back there....

My friend did it in his REX and it looks sweet...

He has Corbeau CR-1's up front and Forza 2's in the back.

Not sure how he mounted them in but he did it and it works good...

Yes, that's the one I meant. Thanks for finding the link.

From that thread, it seems my 6" number is even too low, as they claim that the rear platform sits about 8" higher than the front.

v10m5, if you're still interested, that link found by abaxter34 should be very helpful imho.
Blue Rabbit 02 12-06-2004 08:58 PM

iahh damn someones beta me to it, i knew it was the OG gravel crew's project from the word go... aww shucks...and oh, i dont think its feesible. very ''pimp my ride'' though, so maybe for another sedan, but not an sti
Butt Dyno 12-06-2004 09:05 PM

Do just a LITTLE investigative work, remove the rear seats. Then ask yourself whether you really want to do it :)

silver bQQst. 12-08-2004 02:25 PM

hey vm10- I had my back seat out of 04 sti about a month ago (issues with the rear suspension clunking!!) and took it for a test ride without the back seat in place. You'd be suprised how much noise is suppressed by those rear seats ( i was!) . If you are thinking about doing a custom job, consider how you'll handle that.
