Rim of the World ProRally
Ok its time for Rim. It starts friday night!
Read about Group N Champion Karl Scheible's return to ProRally at our website! www.vtcar.com
Looks like some great competition this year. Lots of returning rally stars. Karl returns, Richard Tuthill is back, and rally legend Rod Millen (Rhys Millens dad) will compete! Plus Petter Solberg will be there signing stuff and showing off on the super specials I believe.
Lets hear everyone's picks, comments and opinions:
I think the Hyundai's will have mechanical problems again, but if Mark Higgins can keep his car in one piece he has to be at the top. He just won the Pirelli Rally in Great Britain in a Focus WRC!
I think the Subarus will dominate, hopefully the bugs will be worked out of Lovell's car and Ramana's steady driving should put him at the top.
It will be interesting to see how well Rod and Rhys and Tuthill do.

I think David Higgins will win in the AV Sports car again. I think Mark Higgins deserves to win, but I'm not sure he will. My top 5 would be:
David Higgins
Mark Higgins
Mark Lovell
Rhys Millen
Ramana Lagemann
Phil
David Higgins
Mark Higgins
Mark Lovell
Rhys Millen
Ramana Lagemann

Looks like Rod Millen is out and Rhys Millen made a wrong turn and lost a lot of time, he's almost in last place in the ProRally standings. 14 of the top 20 cars are Subarus :), including 2nd-5th, but Mark Higgins is in the overall lead ahead of Lagemann by a decent amount. Of course most of the rally happens today.

I'm just looking at the unofficial standings after Saturday night and it looks like David Higgins has won 3 in a row now. Scheible coming in ahead of Lovell is kinda funny as well.
Was sad to see that Randy Zimmer had a DNF but Jamie managed to finish, which I would call an accomplishment, given the attrition rate.

Randy was DQ'ed, not DNF.

I ran into Randy this morning and asked him what happened. Apparently he was on a transit stage and passed a car on a double-yellow line. Turns out that the guy he passed was an SCCA official :(
Tough break considering that Randy was running a superb rally.

It was really rough. We were having alot of fun and doing ok considering out motor was about to die and the front struts were blown on Fri. Sat started ok, but about 2 miles in we knew we were in trouble. Finally put a strut through the hood. First rally on a new car (2002 Sentra) so we're happy to have done so well on day 1. We'll be back. ;)

Ahh, the standings page didn't differentiate the DNF from a DQ, I'm sure we'll hear a story from Randy when he gets back.

Congratulations to the guys of VT SportsCar on your 3rd place finish! You took on the big boys and beat'em. :)

Thanks!! We would have been happy with anything in the top 10. Karl was driving one of our rental cars, which was new and basically a Group N car, with the larger Open class restrictor. So it probably had about 100hp less than the factory Open class cars. And Karl didnt use pace notes!! Plus Karl was just out to 'have fun'! Next month at STPR he will use notes, so he should be even faster.
Wyeth Gubelmann, a customer of ours was running in Group N with a new age WRX STi. He was running 2nd in class and was about 20 seconds out of first and gaining, when he went off into a ditch and got stuck. The car was undamaged but there was no way to get out of the ditch. An unfortunate end to a great rally for Wyeth. His first Group N win can't be far off.
We had a blast at Rim and it was great to see so many WRX's and Imprezas everywhere. Everywhere you looked you saw a Subaru!!

So, why isn't Lovell winning? This is a bit embarassing, having a works supported open class car getting consistently spanked...?

Have you seen the setup that AV Sport has for their cars? It's just as impressive as the Works teams, plus they have a great driver! I'm not surprised at all they're doing so well.

Heh. Didn't mean to downplay the talent they're up against - kudos to everyone! But it would seem natural to think that with a company pouring as much money into a team as Subaru surely is, they would be getting better results...
I guess the question is: What is the most important factor in winning a SCCA ProRally?
Local knowledge?
Equipment?
Technical Support?
Driver talent?
The list goes on and on, I suppose...

>I guess the question is: What is the most important factor in >winning a SCCA ProRally?
hmmmm..... most important factor???
cant rally w/a weak car..... you must build something reliable first...
>Local knowledge? - not a factor
>Equipment? - it had better be reliable
>Technical Support? - without my crew, i would have likely dnf'd every single event this year.... you have to have good support...
>Driver talent? - is a factor... but young and fresh talent can still be faster than some & it can grooved into something more concrete for the future....
Lovell didnt do anything "wrong" he did what many of the other cars did out there... he rolled. Lost a minute.... only a minute!!! and he fought back and held onto 4th overall... that is simply an amazing feat!!!
i definately would not say he's "getting spanked" by anyone! not in the slightest....
there are so many top drivers here now - that there's some fierce competition & it's great!!! This is what it's all about!

Yep, sweep brought it in for me. Amazingly enough, it was mostly intact even though it managed to pull the threads out of the mounts and have me run over it. Both lamps were good as new! It'll be bandaged up temporarily and back on the car for Headwaters this weekend. :D
It was pretty wierd when it was only attached by the one topmost bolt. It would swing left... and right... and left... with each corner. I was pretty distracted, wincing at every bump because I just knew it was going to make a break for freedom. Besides that though, a few dents in the exhaust and a little road rash on the sills and lower right fog pod (nosed in a bit hard over a waterbar, or yump as I see it) was all the damage I could manage to do. I'm pretty happy about that.
I'm sorry to hear about your heat problems Jamie, but I'm extremely impressed that you managed to continue on. I assume I'll see you again for sure at Wild West?
Cheers,
-Doug

Was this Saturday night? Yikes. Hey, as long as it doesn't suddenly pivot 180 degrees on the bolt and point back at you!

which impreza was randy's?
the first transit on saturday, I was following the yellow 740 and a maroon impreza with a silver coupe spoiler blew by me :)
rim was badass, and I have a couple shots of jamie movin' quick on the slutsky canyon (i think, it was at about 3:30 :)) stage :)
it was beautiful, the rally and the town both had more scoobies than I've ever seen :)

Rim was fun, but TOUGH!
Primitive Racing had a good run with the new blaze yellow WRX complete with purple ThunderLizards.
6th overall and 1st in both ClubRallies.
Lost the power steering, tranny, and entire length of exhaust (hey, if anyone found it on Leona, I need the O2 sensor back!) and 3 rims and tires.
Look for story in GrassRoots Motorsports and a press release/pictures in the RACING NEWS section at:

Whew, back to fixing the car...

Yeah this was the 2nd to the last stage on Saturday night. I ran the last stage with just one pod, slightly re-aimed for broader coverage. It worked out OK but two is definitely better.
I never thought about the thing swinging all the way around  That would have been a major bummer! Now that I think about it, the wiring prevented that, but it would be an issue if the wiring came up through the hood where the last bolt was holding...
