Rim Painting Photoshop Request part 1

Rim Painting Photoshop Request
Hi,

I am new here. I just got my WRX about a month ago, and was hoping to powdercoat or paint my stock rims soon. I saw someone else who was considering it with their aftermarket rims and a fellow member photoshopped his car with the different colors. My car is a black WRX wagon, and I was considering the following options:

black - the natural choice, but I don't really think it will look that good because my car is already so black everywhere so I kind of want to contrast the black. I am also tinting my windows in the next week dark black, so keep that in mind.

white - I think this might be a cool color that might give my car a really unique look. I have rarely seen black cars with white rims though.

gold - this seems to be the normal way to go with black subies. I am just worried about getting the exact right tone of gold.

red - this is just a wierd idea of mine, I think it might be really unique. Not really sure what it will look like.

I don't have photoshop or anything - all I have is paint and its really hard to make anything look real in that program. I was wondering if someone could do a photoshop for me so I can get an idea of what it will look like. Feel free to make any suggestions as to color choice and overall color scheme of the car if you feel so inclined.

Here are two pics - you can use whichever is easiest to use, or both if you want to.

White = Rice, and just doesn't look good.

Go with Gold, or black with polished lip would look sweet.

gold on black looks good, I prefer gunmetal with polished lip
hangten93 12-21-2004 01:32 PM

black all the way
Blue Rabbit 02 12-21-2004 02:20 PM

gold looks really nice, but that red is just too tempting...
kolohe 12-21-2004 04:59 PM

Try black lip, red spokes
Kenji815 12-21-2004 05:25 PM

gold rim on black car is sweet
or kinda of gunmetal metallic gray is sweet..

Wow, thanks everyone, especially colinrobinson for the nice photoshop!

I called up some places that do powdercoating. They are gonna charge $75 or so for a rim. Another place said $65 plus $1/minute for sandblasting, which would take about 10 minutes a rim. Anyways, they have around 500 shades of colors and they can do glossy finishes too.

I think the white was okay but it looks too much like stock. I really like gold, I just hope I can get a nice deep, dark shade of gold with a glossy finish. About the red/black combo, I am pretty sure a powdercoating place cannot do two-tone, although I could be wrong. That would look cool though.

I know that I need to make sure I want a particular color scheme before I go too far. If I go with red (I like the bright red like in the photoshop) the taillights will contrast it sharply and will just look out of place. Also, I will need to black out the side marker or do it clear to get rid of that orange. My question is this - if I go red, what do I do to make sure the rest of the car will look clean and not too busy?

Going gold is not bad, aside from the fact that everyone does gold on black subies. What colors would accent the gold the best? I was thinking red would be good for the calipers with gold rims. But I am not too sure if all of this will just make my car look ricey and uncoordinated.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Post pics when you are done.
colinrobinson 12-22-2004 04:00 AM

sort of what it would look like with gold rims and red calipers...you're calipers werent even really 'there' in the picture so i mocked them.

i think all black (black car, black wheels, dark tint) would be  personally.
Jason02WRXCT 12-22-2004 09:20 AM

Gold!!!!
Russell Rogers 12-22-2004 11:16 AM

i like the red. I think it looks sweet

dont powdercoat your stockers mang! paint em and save the money for wheels or other stuff down the road

this way, you can change colors on a whim... and do fun stuff like red for awhile, and if your gold is off the first time, u can do it again. somethin tells me a powdercoating shop wouldnt redo your wheels because the colors wasnt as dark as you wanted it.

I'll throw in another color: STI Pink/red!!!

That looks sooooo nice. I really like the look of that. That is a perfect shade of gold too.

Yeah, $300 for all 4 is kind of pricey. I just am hoping that I can find the right shade of gold paint. I want it to have a nice dark tinge, not a light/dull gold. I even heard that powdercoating never looks exactly the same color as they advertise it to be. It will probably change shades depending on the type of surface it is on. I think I might go to the powdercoating shop's "showroom" and see how nice they can make it, because if they do a really good job it may be worth it.

I plan on keeping the stock rims forever. I do not want to spend a lot of $$ on aftermarket rims when I think my money would be better spent on exhaust components and suspension stuff. I also decided this because a friend told me that the stock rims on the WRX are very light and getting a better performing rim (i.e. lighter) would mean droping two grand. I think he said that the rim is only 17 lbs. Is this true? I know that the 03 and 04 WRXs (I think) have those newer BBS rims and I was not sure if those were the ones he was referring to. I am not sure if he knew mine was an 02 or not. So anyways I just wanted to save money and keep the better stock rim.

I will definitely do that. Hopefully I will do this over my winter break. The tint goes on my windows a few days after xmas and then I will focus on getting some paint to do the rims.
Durmiente 11-10-2005 12:57 AM

wow, well this is a really really old post but i never posted the finished pics. i ended up NOT powdercoating (too much money) and decided to go with a two tone paint job.... kind of the inverse of what kolohe suggested over 11 months ago.... lol. check it out:

looks really nice. First time ive seen painted red stock calipers and liked em. I have a set of black wheels and a set of gold for my black bugeye wagon. Both good choices i think :D
