S203-style JDM hazard, DIY

do it yourself red hazard button...
materials-
stock hazard button(should have came in your car)
masking tape
screwdriver
red spray paint(i used krylon "fusion for plastic")
Step 1... take out center trim... (05 will be different, but should be the same after this step) 02-03, open the cupholder slide-out tray, and unscrew the two screws that are exposed on either side of the cupholder. now pull cupholder out, and then pull upper portion of the trim out(the silver part that has the two vents and the hazard button)
Step 2... take hazard button assembly out of the vent assembly... this requires you to unscrew(okay, you might be able to wiggle it out without doing this but trust me it's much easier) the two small screws on the back of the vents, and rotate the vents up to get them off of the trim. this will expose the trim and the button assembly. the button pushes out THROUGH THE FRONT of the trim, it's only held on by a clip on the top of the button assembly... you have to push pretty hard to get the lower clip through the trim piece but it should work without breaking.
Step 3... Paint the Hazard button... i used krylon plastics Red... #2328 Red Pepper to be exact. i did two coats because i didn't want it to get too shiney. you might want to do more than two to make sure the paint is even. when i did mine, it just did NOT want to atomize and i have noticable speckles... but from more than a foot away it looks flat red.
reassemble and reinstall.
NOTES- if you want to mask off the white hazard triangle that is painted on, do that- but i am going to wait till it dries and then do it with a paint brush, i figure the design is so sharp and small it would be VERY hard to mask effectively.
edit: i got a real one once the sti limited came out... from jamie.

 i know what you're sayin but at least this doesn't light up... and it costs way less than shipping the $25 part from japan!!!

Now you need the JDM business card holder which goes to the left of the cup holder. That would finish it off.

for comparison.
if you want it to light up still, just mask off the lightup parts.

is it the same step for a 2007? Anyone with pics?
| bluemax189 | 01-10-2008 10:18 PM |
i just plasti-dip'd my 07 today. i need to order the red harzard button, but in general its the same procedure. Take of shifter trim, remove the radio shroud(only 2 screws), remove the vents(3 screws) and just pop out the hazard. No screws on the vent fins to remove at all on the 06/07

yup.
if you think $21 for a red button is funny, wait to you see what I've got tied up in:
JDM side markers/repeaters
Spec C Roof vent
2005 LHD center console parts (which I need more of)
JDM rear window w/ wiper
JDM 'rain guards' . . . .

I thought the red hazard button was also on the STi limited, meaning it's not JDM

so...i was looking on subaru genuine parts and saw the 2007 sti limited red hazard button and it was that it should fit the 02-07 impreza blah blah blah. does anybody know if it'll for sure fit my 04 wrx?
probably a dumb question, but i wanna make sure...thanks.

im 100% positive it will work and fit flawlessly
| Handsdown | 12-21-2008 09:40 PM |
yep. and just for the record i eventually bought a real one from SGP
| sellers.tony | 12-22-2008 01:03 AM |
sweet, thanks. i just didn't wanna order one and have it not fit cuz that'd be lame. but it's one of those tasteful little mods that's small but pretty cool, so i'll probably go and order it up like...now.

Handsdown, do you have any pictures of yours?
Also, does the light show through for those who painted theirs?
Any close up pics?

no my harddrive crashed about a year after i did this and i had already gotten the real one.
the light will show through if you mask it off or use really thin paint, but you have to be really good and meticulous.
