Has anyone actually bought the Seibon CF doors they sell for the STi? If so, were you able to put the interior panels on them, or the power windows? How well did they mount/fit?
thanks!
thanks!

I would like to hear about this too. I heard the doors save 150lbs. Future possibility for me.

Everything swaps over and they fit really nice. World One had as customer car with them that they installed that I took a long look at. I'll try to get one of the guys at W1 to put their 2 cents in.

Hi there!
That is a great question. When we weighed these they were approximately 12 lbs. They are not only very light, but very strong and nice. I will be honest...Install was nothing easy. There was a lot of standing back and thinking as well as some F bombs flying around. When all send and done the car looked amazing!! Here is a teaser for you

You guys are welcome to PM me with any questions, but I will also subscribe to this thread to try to help out where I can :D

How much do the stock doors weigh?
| Bad Wagon | 02-17-2007 11:10 AM |
The shells themselves weigh about 45 lbs. With the guts almost 70lbs. Subaru is keen on safety and the intrusion beam in a Subaru door is by far one of the burliest beams I have ever seen on a car. The door backing is also very full and there are very few access holes because the window regulator assy is a "slide in" type and come out in pretty much one piece so there is a lot of added weight there. All I can say for sure when you can go from needing two strong people to install the door and its a bitch because it weighs a ton to only needing the extra guy to hold it with one hand while you line bolts is a plus in my book.

How was the fitment with the doors? You said they were a pain in the a$$ but was that just to get the guts in or the actual fitment of the door in the car? I cant imagine buying 2000$ doors and having to sand and fanagle the door to get t to fit. expecially on a daily driver where there gonna be opened everyday. I mean the weight savings im sure is alot and well worth it but if fitment is to much trouble for someone to do themselves then you also need to spend more $ at a body shop

Thanks for posting the weights of both the Seibon doors and the original doors. ( am i understanding you correctly that EACH stock door shell weighs 45lbs??) if so then the 12lb Seibon doors sound like a great deal. Assuming this is so, i am already saving up for a full set, plus a trunk and CW2 hood.... :D
I was kinda sad that all Seibon parts are wet carbon fiber, but according to them dry CF is a ton more expensive, and that makes sense, seeing as some of the cars that have dry CF body's are generally over 250k...
Yeah, if you wouldn't mind, we would like to hear about the installation process and trials/tribulations you went through to get the doors on.
Cheers!

does anyone know of any companys that make dry carbon body parts, either custom made or just production parts. I know they would be more $$ but they would actually serve a better purpose seeing as how dry carbon is lighter and alot stronger then wet carbon fiber. From what I hear wet carbon has not nearly as much structual ridgidity as dry carbon. I would realy like to know if anyone knows where to get dry carbon parts. I have searched a few times and no one had any answers for me.
I dont know how I would feel about getting hit broadside with carbon doors. Like they said further up in the post the stock doors have a huge door beam that runs thru it and im assuming the seibon ones do not seeing as how they weigh 12lbs. I mean id love to have carbon doors but i would also like to know if i got hit on or off the road that the door is going to hold up.
also are the seibon dors just the door skins? Or are they the whole door minus the window mechanism and trim

i am not sure if it would help, but the Sti comes with side impact airbags...(they are attached to the seats...)

I am not sure a door would even do that :p but i don't drive a hummer so i guess that wasn't never a real concern anyway... i mean, how often do you hear of corvettes getting t-boned? They couldn't pass a side collision test if it was against a scooter, but people still drive them anyway :D
| Bad Wagon | 02-20-2007 04:21 PM |
The Siebon door is complete replacement a full shell, and to clarify yes each stock shell is about 45 lbs, 38 lbs for rears. I assume that most of the problem world one faced was dealing with the stock guts and their order of operation of removal and instillation. For some reason Subaru left just enough room to get the parts no more and in order to install everything correctly they need to be re-installed the EXACT same way that are taken apart. I am just about to paint my Subaru and I have to gut all four doors which took a friend and I almost 3 hours to complete. The only other thing I could see causing a possible head ach but I am not sure if world one faced this problem is that Siebon is very good about getting all the holes pre-drilled in the right spot for a perfect installation but I have seen a couple carbon fiber products (not Siebons) forget a few holes and they can be a very strenuous fix.
Side impact I am not touching with a 10 foot poll. All I know for sure is that these are not street legal and I highly doubt they have been crash tested.

I saw them when they were still carbon fiber and the fitment on them was perfect. The only thing that need to be adjusted were the hinges and latches which is typical on any new door installation. I have never seen a Siebon product not fit like a glove and the parts that World one installed on that car were no exception. I daily driver would only have to worry about slamming the door from then on.

I'm just saying, the airbag keeps your melon from bouncing off the door frame or window.
it won't keep you from getting crushed by the vehicle that's hitting you.
I would think the Vette must have some kind of impact bar in its 'glass door.

So would slamming the CF seibon door chip or shatter parts of the door? are these things fragile in some way?
and vettes do have a metal brace in the door, but its known for being worthless in a wreck.
I have seen plenty of normal cars get hit on the side, if they were side swiped, then i think the air bag and CF would be fine, if they were t-boned then i don't think much will help, even the bar in the original door, it will depend on the speed and type of car that hit you...
its a risk for sure, but i come from riding motorcycles, and not having any sort of protection whatsoever from collisions is something i have come to grips with a long time ago...

These look really nice from a weight savings standpoint but I don't think I would use them on a daily driver. They would be perfect for a track only car with a rollcage and door bars.

Carbon Fiber is very strong...on impact it ends up splintering. I've seen this happen with front lips as well as my hockey sticks. :) Fiberglass on the other hand depending on the force of impact will shatter.

^ so technically, how safe would this be if you got tboned? would the splinters come at you and make it worse?

Depends on the impact point. I would imagine that the inside piece of the door would take a lot of the splinters and not many would come into the cabin.
