Southeast Divisional Info from Heyward Wagner part 1

Southeast Divisional Info from Heyward Wagner
Dear Soloist,

Following Karl Rickert's resignation as the South East Divisional Solo
Steward I was recommended and subsequently appointed to the position
for the 2007 season. First and foremost, allow me to thank Karl for
his years of dedication to our divisional series. Karl stepped up at a
time when no one else was willing and continued tradition of the
Southeastern Divisional series. Despite his efforts, interest in the
series has fallen and it is for this reason that I feel that now is
the time for a new direction. I would also like to thank Rick Cone for
volunteering to serve as the Assistant Solo Steward.

For those of you who were unable joined us at the SEDIV convention in
Jekyll Island, Rick and I presented a proposal for a new format and a
new philosophy for the Solo Series. The philosophy is centered on
three primary goals. The first is to boost participation, the second
is to increase region involvement and the third is to create an
intermediate step that encourages and eases the transition from
"local" to "National" competition. A fourth goal that later emerged is
to grow SCCA membership within the existing autocrossers in the Southeast.

To achieve these goals some traditional obstacles needed to be
overcome. The primary one being the amount of travel and time that was
required to participate. For this reason the decision has been made to
convert the series to a regular season and championship event format,
rather than the traditional "best of" series. The target for the
regular season is 10 events (three events in Florida and south
Georgia, one in north Georgia, three in the Carolinas and three in
Tennessee and Alabama). Of these events drivers would be able to run
in as many as they wished, however only their best 3 (6 total days)
plus the championship event will count toward a championship.

The regular season events will effectively be "Super Regionals." These
events will be hosted and run by the regions with very little
interference from the Division. Southeast Division drivers will also
be able to score divisional points at National Tours within the
Division. The Championship event is currently scheduled for November
3rd and 4th at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This date was selected
primarily because of its availability but it also allows for as many
regular season events as possible.

For more information please reference the Supplemental regulations
below. These are proposed sups. I will accept comments and questions
for one week before finalizing the sups on Monday, February 12th. I
will ask that comments and questions be posted her in the SEDIV Solo
Forums.

The success or failure of the Divisional Program is dictated by the
attendance it generates. This year we are trying something new in an
attempt to make this series accessible as well as enjoyable. However,
for it to be successful we need you, the drivers, to participate. I
urge all of you to help strengthen the Divisional Program, come out
this year and give this format an opportunity to shine.

I would also like to begin dialogues with regional officials to
schedule as many events as we can as soon possible. Given the late
start, I am more than willing to work with your region to find a way
to make these events happen.

Yours for the sport,

Heyward Wagner
SEDIV Solo Steward

2007 South East Division Solo Championship Series Supplemental Regulations

Series Format
The South East Division Solo Series (SEDSS) will consist of a series of regular seasons Super Regionals point events put on and sanctioned by the regions of the South East Division, National Tours within the Division and a year-end Championship Event put on by the Division. A drivers 6 best single days of competition during the regular season plus the points earned at the championship event will be used to determine a drivers series score. Drivers may earn points in multiple classes, however points are not transferable.

Super Regionals
A Super Regional is an event hosted and sanctioned a region that scores points toward the SEDSS Championship. These events are designed to showcase a regions program. They should balance competition and camaraderie while offering the best a region has to offer.

Super Regional Format
1. SEDSS Super Regional Events will consist of two days of competition on the same lot under the same sanction number.
2. In the event of a scheduling limitation special permission for a Region to schedule a one-day Super Regionals maybe requested.
3. Each day of a Super Regional will be scored separately.
4. Drivers may enter either day, or both days of competition.
5. The number of runs per day is at the regions discretion with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5.
6. Regions are encouraged to score each day of competition as part of their Regional championship series.
7. A Saturday Night Social is highly recommended.
8. The lowest entry cap that may be set on a Super Regional is 125 per day.

Requirements of a Super Regional
1. An event chief steward from a SEDIV region not hosting the event must be selected by the host region and approved by the SEDIV Solo Steward.
2. Unless special permission is granted due to schedule or lot restrictions, the same course may not be used in each direction. Of the two course designers one must not be a member of the hosting region and must be approved by the SEDIV Solo Steward.
3. Aside from those positions specifically outlines, the event officials for a regular season event may be exclusively from the host region. In the event that the host region cannot provide the required personnel, the SEDIV Solo Steward will assist in filling position(s).
4. No two Super Regional events may be held on the same date within 500 miles of each other.
5. A region may host no more than 2 days of Super Regional Competition per season. However, two regions may request special permission host Super Regionals on the same site within the same season.
6. The fee for a region to host a Super Regional is $2.00 per entrant.

National Tours
Any national Tour event hosted by a SCCA region within the South East Division will be scored as a regular Season Divisional event with the following guidelines:
1. National Tours will not be broken into single days for scoring, the points scored will be based on the two-day results.
2. Drivers will only be scored against other SEDIV drivers in their class.
3. There will be no additional fees or awards for SEDIV participation in Tour Events.

Championship Event Format
The Championship Event will follow the Solo Nationals format with three runs on each day and a cumulative score of the best run from each day. Attendance in the Championship event is required to claim a SEDSS Championship.

Non-member Participation
Non-SCCA members may enter regular season regional events and record points. These points will not be scored as official until the driver becomes a member of SCCA. To compete in the Championship Event, drivers must be SCCA members.

Points

Super Regionals

Each day of a Super Regional will score the following points:
1st = 10 Points
2nd = 9 Points
3rd = 8 Points
4th = 7 points
5th = 6 Points
6th = 5 Points
7th and below = 4 Points

Nationals Tours

Each National Tour will be scored by the two-day final results with the following points:
1st = 20 points
2nd = 18 Points
3rd = 16 Points
4th = 14 Points
5th = 12 Points
6th = 10 Points
7th and below = 8 Points

Championship Event

The Championship Event is the only time the top drivers in each class must face each other. For that reason the Championship event points, based on two day combined results are weighted to reflect the importance.
1st = 40 + 5 bonus points for winning the Championship Event
2nd = 36
3rd = 32
4th = 28
5th = 24
6th = 20
7th and below = 16

Points Calculation
Drivers may count up to 6 total days of regular season competition. Each National Tour counted in a drivers total will count for two days. A drivers total will be the highest combined total of Super Regional and National tour results without eclipsing 6 total days.

Do you know approximately what time things finish up on Sunday? (Trying to figure out if we'll need to ask for Monday off too.)

I think we finished up around 5ish on Sunday, so, yeah, probably Monday off too if you plan on going to the final round and/or sticking around for awards. ;)

So..it would appear that no one actually cares about the SeDiv events or new program?
KC 02-09-2007 07:39 AM

I think it's cool!!

But then again, I live about 1000 miles away from it all.

I'm really just giving them a hard time.............

Since it took KC one post to take my thread totally off topic.....:p

I figured we might get comments about the suggested format, the idea of "super regionals" etc, etc.

You know........its called "FEEDBACK"....... :cool:

Go to the SE tours, go to your "super regional", if desired go to your neighboring region's "super regional", go to AMS in November, have fun, compete, blah, blah, blah....

If something conflicts, so what? You've got 10 chances to run 3 events. Instead of traveling all over to run a couple of "good" events, you get to run relatively close to run at good events and run in one "great" event at the end. I think the format is GREAT!
steverife 02-09-2007 03:08 PM

Karl was always nice to me and I appreciate his efforts the past few years, but frankly, the SEDiv scheduled SUCKED last year.

Half the season was over before the end of February. I was already out of season championship contention before they even took the "freeze warning" signs down at the entrance of my neighborhood. The entire schedule was done by mid-June. The year before, there was a 60 something entry event in Virginia. That is sad for a divisional. I don't see how anyone can see this as anything but a positive for SEDiv Solo.

good for you..:D...for Me...personally....it sux...I am NOT driving 16 hours(one way) in some cases to do a divisional....sorry...However I do agree with you about the state of the SE divs.....I see this as a Bold bandaid to the demise of the all Regionals...whether its the SE....or some other Region....I applaud the efforts of Mr. Wagner...especially to step up and try to make something happen...Kudos...But ...the format...is not waiting on a Schedule...which, as you may or maynot know...People plan monthes and monthes ahead of time to make even a tour event...much less a divisional thats not even scheduled yet...:rolleyes:

Bill
Scooby South 02-09-2007 03:52 PM

Let me clarify....real quick..The format.....for this year...because its all of a sudden...and not organized....is what I am frustrated about...I have planned my budget for the year already as well as what events I am running...so unless its close to me....I probably won't even bother...next year...will probably be a different story...because hopefully its more organized...

Probably one reason it wasn't successful is that it wasn't promoted until the last minute..and relied heavily on word of mouth and a quick email reminder...and it was a " Hey theres a divisional this weekend in_______ (fill in the blank...)..Plus....Even tho Karl Ran A great event....it wasn't what I would call a go between a local and a national event.....
2 more points and I will got off my box...

- combining a divisional and national event is NOT the way to do these...they need to be seperated

- Show me "where" these events are going to take place....
yes there is ALOT of discussion on SEDIV forum right now...but nothing concrete on where these events are going to take place..

The whole point of this format is the fact that YOU DONT HAVE TO....

Thats why he wants three events in each area of the SE. We could potentially have 3 right in Florida and you'd be squared away until the Championship event.
If you thought you did really bad at one of the events, you could travel a bit further and try to do better since its only your top 6 days that will count.

This format saves us from having to drive all over to be in contention for the championship...........

The biggest change is that due to a lack of regional events to attend, the required number of days of competition has been dropped to 4.

I'll be at the May 5-6 event in Danville, VA this year. Next year, I hope to attend the Dixie NT as well as do another 2 day event.

ETR's plan to schedule a weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway fell through. It sounds like Heyward is giving us an okay to do two seperate single day events on different weekends. Dates to be determined, like pretty much the rest of our schedule. :(
