Sport Seats in WRX and the Airbag Light

I called up SPX Kent-Moore and ordered the below item (quantity two) so that my airbag light doesn't have to be "on" since I replaced the WRX seats with new sport seats. Just thought I'd give props to them for being very professional and courteous in handling the order (plus their price of $9.39 each was much less expensive than ordering it through a Subaru parts counter).

Cheers, GoodFinder :)

"Your car's airbag control module expects to see a 3 ohm resistance and it's not there. You can either connect a 3 ohm resistor to the two-pin side airbag connector under the seat or you can buy Subaru part (tool) number 98299PA040, which has a 3 ohm resistor built into it and connects right up to the airbag connector under the seat."

Hi,

Are these the sport seats you installed?

Do you lose the adjustments for our driver side?

Thanks,
Anthony

let me know if this works... i have the dam light on all the time...
please pm me

tnmn28 - I put a pair of Sparco "Milano" sport seats in the WRX. But those you pointed to in the URL look mighty nice, too!

wRx14pSi - I'll post a note to this thread once I get it hooked up. But if I forget for some reason, you can jot me a reminder, too!

GoodFinder :)

Goodfinder - thanks for the reply.

thanks GoodFinder... will remind u... until my airbag light goes out

wikkid pissah, just ordered a set too! :)
deepbeep 07-19-2002 02:45 PM

FYI: that part number is not a straight fix. I just got two of them, and the connectors don't mate up (misaligned pins). Still have to find the correct connector for the airbag plug, so if anyone has any suggestions as to what kind of plug that is, I'd be happy to hear about it! :)
GoodFinder 07-19-2002 03:45 PM

deepbeep,

I see you have an RS in addition to WRX ... maybe the person who told me this particular part number, had an RS instead of an WRX ... perhaps that is why the pins are "off" by one position in the connector?

Hopefully this weekend I'll have time to stop by a parts store and buy a couple of blank connectors to reroute the pins, and then to see how it works.

Of course, as you said, if there is a truly correct p/n that somebody has, that would be even better!

GoodFinder :)

So this DOES or DOESN'T work for the WRX??
GoodFinder 07-19-2002 04:34 PM

The connectors don't lock into place because one of the two pins is "off" by one position in the connector grid. So, out of the wrapper, it doesn't work. Now, it may be something as "simple" as the pins needing to be "moved over one position" and then it's fine. But I tried to do that with the connector of the piece and, well, maybe I'm not coordinated enough or something to do it. So at this point I'm gonna look for two "blank" connectors to put the two wires into the correct pin location. Or, of course, I can do away with the connector end altogether, and simply put a pin at the end of each of the two wires and plug it right into the piece underneath each seat. I'm sure I could describe this better with pics but I don't have a digital camera yet.

I'll try to take some pics of the part tonight, which would definitely help to explain the issue Goodfinder and I are having...
In the meantime I'll try to describe it verbally: What I have is actually a simple little rig with one female plug that is supposed to connect to the male airbag lead on the car. There's a 6", 2 lead length of wire or so, which connects to a second 2 prong plug. The actual resistor (which is shielded and self-enclosed), plugs into that plug.

The problem is that the female connector does not correctly mate with the male airbag connector on the car. I don't think it's simply a pin out issue... it seems like the actual connectors will not mate up correctly due to a tongue & groove misalignment. The simplest solution may indeed be to do away with the connector and just plug the two pins straight into the car's airbag connector. :)

BTW, Goodfinder: The RS doesn't have airbags in the seats, so maybe the part is intended for the steering wheel or passenger bag? Who knows...

I think I'll hack off the connector this weekend... I want to know that the resistor actually works. Watch me blow all my bags by accident...

deepbeep,

Well, whichever one of us does it first, let's be sure to post our results!

Either of you guys figure out a solution to the problem?
deepbeep 07-29-2002 11:11 PM

Not yet... I dremelled (is that a verb?) one of the plugs off the pins, just to see if the pins would actually fit in the existing airbag plug on the car, which it didn't. They're just a little too wide. I -did- get them in enough to check whether the thing performs its intended function; turning off the airbag light. At least that bit works!! Didn't get any further with it than that... I went camping instead, with the airbag light lit in all its glowing red glory. :)

It's just a question of trying to find out what sort of plug fits on the airbag one on the car... I have absolutely no idea of where to start on that one!
kalex 07-30-2002 01:35 AM

jump the wires first to ...

check if it works, then bypass (pigtail?)the wire that is not aligned, then label that wire for future disassembly. This is better than running around for a socket that might not work.

I did this to my uk300, the socket did not match, so before I cut the plugs, I jumped the wires first, when I knew that it works, I went out and bought the parts I need and did the assembly.

Hope this helps.

My WRX seats went into an older car so there was no need for airbag hookup. Therefore, I simply cut off the airbag connectors from the seats, and spliced in the Subaru part, and it works fine. No more airbag light. But, for everybody else contemplating putting sport seats in the WRX, and especially if you don't want to cut the connectors off the old seats, there surely must either be (a) a source for the connector pieces, or (b) a proper Subaru part number where it really does fit up properly. You could call SPX Kent-Moore for more information, I reckon.

I would love sport seats but like the idea of having side airbags in my car. I really love the new sti seats.:) I heard that cobra found a way to use the airbag in the seats but I bet it destroys the old seat in the process of getting the bag out. Darn you subaru for not putting them in the doors. How important and helpful are they anyway??

sorry for hijacking the thread
Idjiit 08-20-2002 07:05 PM

Doh! I went ahead and order these parts before learning that it doesn't work... Grrrr.

I let you know what I figure out.

Is the airbag cable the yellow one or the black one?
HomeGrownXC 08-27-2002 05:17 PM

Is there anyone with a GDB shop manuel (jp) that can get an updated part number for us?

Thanks - Greg
Idjiit 08-30-2002 06:00 PM

Bump...

Black or yellow cable, guys? I've tried the black cable (I followed it through the seat, looks like the Yellow one actually goes to the Side Airbag, not the "I'm sitting down" sensor) and so far, no go. I haven't hardwired it yet, so maybe I'm not making a firm enough connection.

BTW, my multimeter says this is a 6ohm resistor, not a 3ohm. Is my multimeter just hosed?
mr2guru 08-30-2002 07:39 PM

Well I just did a fix for this......

First off...all vehicles...yellow wrapped cables are SRS stuff only.

It's the yellow 2 wire cable with yellow/green connectors.

I went to radio shack and bought 2 5watt 25ohm variable resistors (rheostats) and some small male flat pin connectors.

I measured ohms and turned the knob to 3.3ohms. I then soldered 2 male pins, that fit into the connector on the car, to 2 wires. I then soldered the wires to the corresponding pins on the rheostats. Plugged them in and wrapped everything nice.
No more "AIR BAG" light. Plug and play with no cutting things up.

I would have just got resistors but I couldn't find any 1 watt resistors that were only 3-5 ohms. The lowest they had was 33ohms.

Be careful when you measure the effective resistance of the airbag through the connector at the seat. There is a spring clip that automatically "shorts" the airbag wires at the connector when it is disconnected. Gave me a 0.3ohm reading....thats also what I get when I put the two leads of my meter together ;)

my ghetto fix = $7.28 total

Idjiit,

6ohms is fine, I think the SRS CU needs to see anywhere between 2 ohms and 8 ohms. 3.3ohms is the actual resistance of at least my airbags

mr2guru -
Thanks for the info! I actually fixed mine on Friday. Figured out that it was the yellow cable. I though initially that we were trying to fool the "I'm sitting down" sensor, not the airbag prescence itself, hence my confusion. So yeah, it worked with the yellow cable.

The Subaru part actually says 3 ohms on it, so maybe my circa 1960's multimeter has seen better days. Probably just needs to be calibrated.
SoLo OnE 09-03-2002 12:19 PM

All I did was stick a 5 cents 3 ohm resistor in the end of the plug.

No more airbag light. :D
ResQDawg3 01-15-2003 01:17 AM

(Time to revive an old topic.) So the solution to the Air Bag light is to just get a 3 ohm resistor, shorten the ends, then stick it in the plug where the one from the seat used to be?
blaznasn 01-15-2003 02:04 AM

i just bought the jdm control unit, it only reads for the two front airbags instead of four, it looks exactly the same, just the brain is reading something different than the usdm, so i replaced that with my stock, and no light. im not sure how much they cost, but i got mine for 50 bucks.

p.s I OWN PAGE 2!!!
whiterabbit 01-15-2003 02:21 AM

how do you plug in a 3 ohm resistor? i suck at electronics :(
whiterabbit 01-15-2003 06:04 PM

does a 3.3k-Ohm resistor work?
1/4 watt 5% tolerance

thanks
whiterabbit 01-16-2003 02:48 PM

bump

i cant find just a 3ohm resister only 3.3k and 3.9k
nicktckhoo 01-16-2003 08:43 PM

Just use it....should be fine.
