STI HVAC controls into a WRX TR

I really hate how the hvac controls look like.
For me they look very cheap!
No disrespect though, for i am a 2006 wrx tr owner myself.
so the question is,
is it possible to install the regular wrx or sti hvac controls into the tr ?
which parts ?
anyone done it ?

well this has been cover many times in the forum...
I would say YES its do-able but it will involved changing alot of things
that might cost you an arm and a leg to do...
it is because the way these controls work are totally different
also, they look cheap now because the newer model has the new design
of the HVAC unit...but the HVAC unit has been like that since the bugeye generation
i myself have the unit that you have and i think it looks ok..not really that bad
so instead of spending $500 or more to do that...
it might be better if you spend the money on suspension, engine, etc
=)

Shouldn';t have bought the TR.

i know this sounds harsh, but i mean this sincerely...
is it that bad to turn a knob once in a while?
maybe i don't understand, i haven't used my A/C for more than 20 minutes in the last two years.

To answer the original question, it is not practical to do the swap. The basic manual controls in the TR are cable-operated, the automatic ones in the WRX/STI are electrically operated. In addition to the controls themselves, the HVAC box itself is different and there are also associated control modules and sensors. The entire dash would have to be ripped apart to access and replace the needed parts.
Hardly worth the effort and expense just to avoid turning a dial or two.

You know that's bad for your AC right?

assuming the electrical harnesses for the HVAC are the same, you'll have to get the new HVAC unit and a new center cover.

I used the STi HVAC controls a few weeks ago on a road trip... man they're annoying!
Give me my knobs and switches for the win!

as someone else mentioned above, the old style is mostly a manual system, whereas the new one is 100% electronic. wiring harnesses are going to be a very small issue overall... if you have ever pulled out your radio (on an old style) you will see all the pushrods and cables and such that you are actually moving when you turn the knobs.

ok, i too want to do this for my tr, but my concern is strictly looks only. if i were to change the hvac unit to the sti one on my tr, (lets say the harnesses are the same) would i be able to use the climate control in the same way i did with my tr(manual not auto) and it'll just look like the automatic?
| Mulder | 07-13-2006 12:47 PM |
NO! There is no harness with your TR because the controls are mechanical. You can't just swap the electronic ones in and be able to use them. Get used to what you have.

i agree. the TR is a cool idea, but its a horrible value if you ask me. you lose so much from the wrx but only get cut a discount of 500 bucks? weaksauce.

it is possible but you need the electrical unit that gets rid of your pushrod system that means digging deep into your dash and messing with all the rods and their positions and the unit that will open and close them. It won't be an easy job at all, I thought about doing it last summer but gave up. good luck!

oh im sorry guys, u misunderstood me.
im not being lazy turning knobs, its the LOOK that i wanted to change!
if i could just swap the controls, that would be great, even if i'd still be turning knobs!

I think it would be even more of a pain in the ass to do it just for looks, as those knobs are probably an integrated unit, and definitely not designed to manipulate cables.

yeah you can't hook those controls up to the mechanical HVAC, there's no way to put the gears on them and make them move the same way.
and i didn't know not using the A/C was so bad for it. if i let it idle with the A/C on for 5 minutes every other month, would that be enough to keep the system charged and everything?

It is bad for it (according to my aircraft mechanic uncle), but there's a sweet catch. 99% of all window defroster systems use the AC to remove moisture from the air when you turn them on. So as long as you run the AC or defroster once a month, you are golden. The problem is sitting vehicles.

Just to thread jack, the center console panel covers in the TR are they the same from the 02-04 years? I want the carbon fiber trim !
| biba028 | 07-13-2006 09:45 PM |
no, look at the pics.
the older ones got rounded edges.

they also didn't bulge out around the dials(which is what i hate about the TR)

oh damn =\ thats about a bitch, I got scratched on mine and I need a replacement....:(

just get an 05+ normal center console. Same looking controls but no climate control hassle.

are they manipulated by cables too ?
or are they electronically based ?
if i could swap 05 wrx controls, to 06 wr tr controls, are they plug and play ?
