STi Trunk Swap and VIN issue
Hello,

I wrote my local dealer and said I wanted to purchase an STi and have them swap out for a wingless WRX trunk because I want to put a limited wing on. ( http://www.renickmotorsports.com/oscommerce/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=676_713_719&products_id=1878 ). Anyway, they said they couldnt do a swap because the VIN is on the trunk. Is this BS?

Thanks

VIN....on a trunk? This will be news to me.

Call a different dealer, apparently they don't want to sell you a car.
salisburyv 10-09-2006 02:41 PM

BS we do trunk swaps all the time. They obviously dont know what they are doing. Find another dealer. See its dealers like that, that give us all a bad rep.

Yup, I vote pure BS. As far as I know, there's only one "VIN" marker on the car and that's the one under the windshield They just don't want to do do the swap, which could be understandable (too much work, rather sell you a Ltd., etc.).

I guess you'll have to do it the same way as the rest of us!
SUBASCOTT 10-09-2006 02:47 PM

actually, most major body panels have a sticker on them with the vin and a bar code. Not bs.
salisburyv 10-09-2006 03:32 PM

A sticker is different from the stamp on the firewall. There is no issue with doing this from a legal standpoint. To be proper, save your old lid and put it back on before you sell the car or trade it. And my tech can do a swap in about an hour and a half. Not a big deal, 1 impreza to another. Takes longer to switch over the rods to hold it up.

agreed, they are called crash stickers. it is to indicate if the car has been in accident. they cannot be replaced from the factory either.

It is still BS that they say a VIN being on a trunk lid doesn't allow the to swap body parts. Definately find another dealer because if they don't do something this simple, how would they act if you ever had any issues down the road that need taking care of.

renick is probably the best suburu dealership in so-cal and its not bs. i work at a toyota dealership and our cars have the same thing. it is a vin sticker and you cant get replacements.
RufusAZ 10-09-2006 03:55 PM

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, I thought something was strange with that Internet sales guy. Then, later in the email, he said he had a Limited on hand if I was interested. I was there a few days ago and the floor salesman said they sold their last Limted for 4k over sticker. Anyway, I just want the rear lip spoiler without a bunch of hasles. I will look elsewhere.
RufusAZ 10-09-2006 03:56 PM

Oh, and btw, I wasn't refering to Renick's dealership. That's just where I saw the wing I wanted. This was a dealership in Arizona.
t3hWIT 10-09-2006 03:57 PM

Why not get the STi, and swap with a local with a 2.5i?
Hazmat 10-09-2006 04:11 PM

which dealership? I know power subaru did it in scottsdale. That is how I get my sti trunk/wing on my wrx before I left the lot because someone doesn't want the it and so they swap it with a wrx.
RufusAZ 10-09-2006 04:30 PM

It was Power Subaru. I think maybe the Internet guy was either confused or just wanted to get me into a Limited. I know a few guys with STi's that have swapped trunks their.
culturedetox 10-09-2006 05:42 PM

I bought my WRX with an STi wing on it from Subaru of Dallas.
Ghosthound 10-09-2006 08:58 PM

from what i have heard, there are somewhere around 7 or 8 vins over the car. most of them are in places people dont know about. the reason for this is that police can check to see whether or not a car is composed of stolen parts, oh yeah, of course the police know where all the different vins are.
RufusAZ 10-09-2006 10:25 PM

Well, I got an email back from another dealer that doesnt seem to have a problem with it. Looks like I'll go with him.
thewr3tched 10-09-2006 10:30 PM

Data Dots
actually, there probably is a VIN on the trunk. you'll see more new cars with stickers that say "Data Dots" on them. I know KIA's use them for sure, they put them on many of the body parts in case they are stolen. They can store the VIN number or whatever else.

just do a google on datadots.

DataDots!?! I guess that means I probably shouldn't steal somebody's wingless trunk. :D

Word.. I deal with Renick on a almost weekly basis.. if they say something there is a reason for it. I have a feeling there is something different about the vins on the 07 limited we are not privy to. with earlier models this may have been easy as 123 but this is the first limited production run the US market has seen. I bet Subaru does extra stuff to the limited models.

You don't even need google to research that, just hit search here on NASIOC as they have been covered before here as well.

Not looking to hijack this thread but I am looking into getting this done on my 06 STI.
I want an 06 WRX with rear spolier to swap out.
Do I need different springs for the trunk?

Will the rear light on the spoiler still function properly??

Thanks
06 Scooby 10-10-2006 02:25 PM

ya i just did this swap. to my 06 from an 05...worked fine, just make sure u swap springs too!
RufusAZ 10-13-2006 11:36 PM

Arggg. Every dealer I email tries to get me into a Limited. "Did you know there is an STi with that exact setup called the STi Limited? Come on down and let's order one for you." I know what a Limited is and I don't want to pay over sticker for anything.
NewSTI 10-13-2006 11:52 PM

well why even bother have them change it for you ? just buy a trunk and put it on yourself. problem solved.
RufusAZ 10-14-2006 01:53 AM

Money I could use on power mods.
112nick 10-14-2006 03:46 AM

The dealer not wanting to swap out trunks is not uncommon. Not really BS either, as most have stated already, most major panels, parts, are labeled with same VIN. This is so that the vehicle can be identified. They'll give you the same line if you ask to swap out these silvers for the gold wheels off of that one. The VIN that is associated with that vehicle has every feature on that vehicle in a national data base that any dealership can access. VIN # XXXXXXAUIX(#*$* will pull up: WRB STi, Gold rims, fog lamps, etc..... while VIN $(*TJ478f8jdhgie9: OBP STi, Silver rims, auto dimming rearview mirror.

They just don't want to do the work involved in ordering a new trunk, rather sell what's on the lot,and let the customer deal with any modifications to their new car.
