Sunroof in a STI??

I know that the STI doesnt come with a sunroof. Is it possible to put one in?? Can the dealer do it, just like the WRX? Has anyone seen or done their STI. I really want the STI but I love sunroofs in my cars. Any info would be great, thanks!!!!

the sunroofs in the new age imprezas are kinda dinky. i think it has something to do with an important beam that runs across the roof, doesnt leave much room for a sunroof.
i dont really know what im talking about

anything could be possible if you have the money to do it...
but i dun think dealer would open the hole on the roof of STI

there is at least one member on this site with a sun roof on his bug eye wrx....

I don't think that there are any structural differences between the STi and the WRX that would prevent the installation of a WRX sunroof in an STi. I'm sure you could get someone to install one for you.

If anyone knows what the price tag on that is I would be interested. When I first got my WRX I thought that I was going to put a rally scoop on the roff but decided against it, and now I wish I got the sunroof.

and the opening is like less than ONE FOOT. i looked like wasting money to me, so i went with just regular wrx instead of premium.

Well, there's always the legacy sunroof ... That thing is monsterous compared to ours, but it would of course pose a whole new host of problems ... On another note though, the 06's (STI's of course) are rumored to have the premium package in the works ... That would mean they'd get the sunroof, heated seats, and heated mirrors ... It's only a rumor at this time, but it shows lots of promise ... Lots of people would love to have the "loaded" STI, purists would disagree ... :D

It is true, the WRX sunroof recedes into the roof, it does not pop-out. As for the size, it is OK, one of the smallest sunroofs, but it is still nice to have.

you cant just order the factory sunroof and have it installed It would require a new roof skin, drains, track assembly, etc. If you get the dealer to install a sunroof you get an aftermarket product

Excellent. I actually wish I could get heated seats and wing, but no sunroof (I don't need 80lbs up that high, but oh well), but I won't really be upset that it's there :)

Besides receding into the roof there's another setting that raises the back instead of opening flat / <- like that only not as steep.

If I remember correctly the STi has a bunch of crossmembers in the roof that look structural, my thought is adding a sunroof to the STi is going to remove structural integrity. Does the WRX have these?

Funny this thread just popped up - I just deleted the extensive pictures I took for a thread (posted quite a few months ago) like this the other day.
Here's a shot where you can see the roof in the tallest of vented positions:

It's a Webasto tilt, vent and slide power moonroof (sunroof? what's the difference?) that retracts into the roof. This Webasto unit is much larger than the factory option and only required a new headliner. Out the door I think I paid $1,100 and it's one of my favorite things I've done to the car. You wouldn't believe how many people stop me about it at meets or wherever else. Finally, I lapped Mid-Ohio many times throughout a two day track event and did not notice a loss in chassis rigidity, nor top heavy tendencies (I'm six foot nothing and with my helmet on I had plenty of clearance, too).
If you want a moonroof, sunroof, whatever, I highly recommend this unit - no leaks, no creaks, no nothing, just flawless performance day in and day out.

to bad about those pictures i would like to have seen what this looks like from the inside and some better ones of it outside from above.
i was thinking of doing this to my STI, but still havnt seen anyone who has it on an sti and dont know if they have braces across the roof that the wrx doesnt have. wouldnt seem like they would but i have no idea.
also where did you pick it up? i went to the Webasto website and they have a little information about 2 different ones which is the one you guys have?
P.S.
i think the difference between a sunroof and moonroof is the, sun roof when its closed you can't see thru it and a moonroof you can

Impreza Sunroof Considerations

Ok, let's clear some things up about sunroofs in imprezas.
1.) A sunroof has glass and the headliners slides to allow you to look through the glass with the glass closed. A moonroof is solid and simply opens/vents up.
2.) Any aftermarket sunroof larger than the factory sunroof cuts the crossbeam in the roof and can result in a loss of structural integrity in ALL IMPREZAS (STI or not). Weather it will be noticeable/affects performance depends on your driving habits and track time.
3.) The factory sunroof is small because it does not cut the crossbeam!
4.) Aftermarket sunroofs generally slide on top of the car (except the Webasto unit).
5.) T he factory sunroof retracts INTO the car when opened. The reason for this is the impreza is meant to be a versatile car and retracting on top of the car limits roof rack options (the aftermarket sunroof glass can get in the way of a rack if it slides on top of the car).
6.) Retracting into the cars headliner results in less headroom! The base WRX has 46.5 of headroom while the Premium Package WRX has 44.3. I am 510.5 and my hair (short) brushes the headliner in my Premium Package Sedan which can be annoying. I do have a long torso so YMMV. It is over a two inch difference though and going over big bumps at high speeds I have hit my head before.
7.) The aftermarket sunroofs have more functions in the control unit. The webasto unit as I recall has onetouch open/close and automatically closes the roof when you turn the key off in the ignition if you left the sunroof open (you dont have to push the button but simply turn the car off and take the key out).
8.) The factory unit has archaic controls and has no automatic open or close. In fact, you have to push the close button twice as a safety precaution so that you dont accidentally close the roof. In addition the factory control consists of two toggle switches (basically four buttons if you choose to view it this way) one for open/close and a separate button for ventup/ventdown. Most modern cars incorporate all movement functions into one toggle switch that opens/down in one direction and closes/ventup based on weather the roof is open or closed. Hopefully this makes sense. Basically most cars have a more advanced toggle switch instead of fumbling with two separate toggle switches.
9.) The factory sunroof only adds a total of 41 pounds to the curb weight of the vehicle (WRX Sedan vs. WRX Sedan with Premium Package). One must remember that this 41 pounds accounts for all the options that come with the Premium package as you cannot order just the sunroof, it comes with the sunroof, heated seats, heated mirrors, heated windshield wiper rests, and the rear spoiler. The weight split is 14 pounds over the front wheels and 27 pounds over the rear wheels so you can see the sunroof itself does not add much weight as the spoiler is the main weight addition.
10.) Remember the quality and longevity of an aftermarket sunroof is largely based on who installs it for you. They will have to cut your roof so be prepared for what comes along with this (i.e. if it looks only very slightly crooked to you). There are good people that do installs and there are bad just like for everything.
11.) Aftermarket sunroofs generally cost about 1200 dollars installed while the Factory premium package is about 1200 dollar option but includes all the other amenities. ( You currently cannot get a Premium Package STI).
I hope these considerations help those who are interested in a sunroof for their imprezza.

Since I have bought many subarus from the same dealer I have had the same Subaru mechanic over the course
of many years. So I trust him implicitly. I posed the question about sun roofs to him and he believed it was a bad idea. He thinks that a car which generates so much torque would have significant body twisting. So every inch of body metal is necessary. Otherwise the windshield ,for example , would be compromised. Anyway just his opinion.

There's no way those headroom figures are correct. My Jetta has 37.6" of headroom, I'm a long-torso 6'3", and my hair brushes.
The headroom spec I found for a premium package WRX is 36.6" vs 38.6" without.

OneWay - I'll try and snap some more pictures if I get a chance, sorry about that. Also, the WRXs' have the same bracing your STi does. So if you get a aftermarket sunroof, one brace (that I know of) will be cut. Like I said, though, they car felt rock solid while lapping at high speeds.
I got the roof installed at a place called Auto Additions which is local to me. Maybe Webasto has a list of authorized installers in your area that you can check out. For what it's worth, AA has been doing sunroof installs for many, many years. In fact, they do a lot of the sunroof installs for local dealerships where customers have requested a sunroof option. So, the quality of the install was top notch. Research the shops capable of doing this work to make sure you get a quality install. By the way, I believe my roof is model number 6035857.
SubNub - Excellent post. You're right, the Webasto unit does have many features when compared to the stock unit. For example, two memory settings, one touch open/close/vent(as you mentioned), auto close if so desired, various postions inbetween fully opened/closed/vented, etc.
I have to agree with grue, though, about the skewed headroom figures. Like I said, at six foot, I fit in there no problem with a helmet on. Perhaps your seat is adjusted rather high.
The weight addition, like you said, is minimal. Think about it, you're losing sheetmetal and a beam (in my case, not yours), and adding a piece of glass, two tracks, and the likely equivalent of a small, side window motor. And since I ditched my stock rear spoiler, don't have seat/mirror/wiper heaters, I'd say my car probably weighs less than a premium package WRX all other things being equal. But that's neither here nor there.
Thank you for clearing up the sunroof/moonroof confusion I had. I love my sunroof :D
Again, excellent post.
brunetmj - Your mechanic's worries about the sunroof are not in vein. However, I don't know about his theory regarding "body twisting" due to the presence of the sunroof and absence of sheet metal and a beam. Among many other supporting mods, my car has an Axis built 2.35L that's putting out more torque than the factory 2.0L - I'll be damned if there's any detectable/degrading twisting going on. Furthermore, I don't know how the windshield would be affected by any of this. Please explain.

I also have the premium package. I am 6'2", and my head doesn't come anywhere near hitting the ceiling. My legs are fairly long, but i'm not that weirdly proportioned. I would really have to stretch to hit the roof. However, in many coupes I have been in, my head DOES brush the ceiling, so it's not like my torso is that short.
The controls are a bit archaic. My gf has an Audi A4, and man is that controller a work of art. I hate having to close the roof in 2 stages, *** is the point of that =/. I figured it might be to reduce wind tunnel effect, but in that case it should do it in 2 stages on opening, not closing.
Also, as for the weight split, I find it hard to believe it adds 27 pounds over the rear wheels. I thought recently in the forums someone said the spoiler only weighs 5 pounds? I guess with the taillight and bolts it could be another 5, but it still seems weird.
Anyways, the factory sunroof is just decent, because of it's small size. If you could get an aftermarket that's a larger size, I say go for it.

Grue- You are somewhat correct as I should have said compartment height. The figures I gave are total compartment height and not headroom from the seat to the headliner but that point is moot as all things being the same the factory sunroof still eats 2 inches of headroom since the seat mounts the same in either car.
yertle- I realize I am shorter than you but a lot of headroom is directly related to seat position. I have shorter legs so I have to be a bit closer to the pedals than someone with longer legs. Youre taller so I would imagine your arms are longer too. All of these things equal a seating position further back than I could use. More importantly it depends on how you like to "ride". I see all these fools that have their seat positioned so that they are driving from the back seat (read: tilted back ghetto style). This is in no way a good driving position. The more I lean the seat back the more headroom I have but I lose the lateral comfort of the seat as I must then lift my upper back off the seat to reach the wheel. I am in no way disproportioned however I use a more vertical seat driving position that is preferred by most racers. You want the steering wheel to be facing your collar bone. Anyway, those who ride with their seats lying down and enjoy it, then you won't have problems with headroom. The seat just sits too high in the car and I have it adjusted to the "lowest" position.
That is one complaint I have with the car is the lack of seat control in the downward direction.
I still believe the two button push close requirement is a safety issue to insure that you did indeed intend to close the roof.
02R6- Thanks for the kind words man. I tried to make a straight forward post that gives the facts and not too much opinion.
By the way all the figures I took are all from the Factory Shop Manuals in the Specifications section so you can look it up if you like. I believe they give the specs in the back of the owners manual as far as weight and height measurements so you can all verify for yourselves. I am going to try to snap some photos of the factory roof to add here and also of my driving position so you can see what I am talking about.
